    What was a carefully planned gender reveal in Hawaii turned into an accidental spoiler alert, all thanks to one wrong turn and a very unlucky cake casualty.

    The couple expecting thought they had the secret safely sealed in frosting. That is, until gravity (and poor car navigation) spoiled the surprise before they even made it home. Instead of a dramatic reveal moment, they got a palmful of cake, a very visible splash of bright blue, and the kind of story no balloon pop or confetti cannon could ever top. 

    Something Blue

    Stephanie (@stephaniendraper) has dedicated a handful of TikToks to showcasing her journey with her first pregnancy. This particular video concerning the gender reveal has garnered 523,000 views and almost 2,000 comments.

    The video begins from the point-of-view of the driver, in this case, Stephanie’s husband. The camera pans to the passenger seat, and viewers get an eyeful of cake in his outstretched palm, Stephanie gripping the trembling cake and the shocker–bright blue hues. The cake seemed like it was carefully frosted in white, but now a chunk lies in Stephanie’s husband’s palm, and the secret is out. As they both laugh at the situation, her husband offers her to take a bite.

    Stephanie declines, and we then see him taste test it from his palm. At this moment, it seems the couple realizes they are still in the situation, saying that the cake is everywhere and they need to pull over.

    The husband manoeuvres the car with one hand and continues eating the cake with the other. Stephanie says, “I’m literally crying,” as she looks on in disbelief.

    The clip zooms in on her face, and the text overlay says: “Finally hitting me at this moment that we are having a BOY!”

    As the car slows down, the husband brings down the window and talks to presumably a pedestrian. He says, “Sorry. A cake collapsed while I was turning in. We’re having a boy, by the way.”

    They both laugh and Stephanie says, “This is so on brand right now.” The caption of the TikTok adds, “We would not have wanted it any other way! Best Gender Reveal!”

    Who’s at Fault for the Gender Reveal?

    Noting other gender reveal stories, the internet says that Stephanie lucked out. Other couples haven’t been so lucky. The Mary Sue covered a story where a couple’s cake revealed the wrong gender of their baby.

    The medical document covered the gender with a blue sticky note, and the baker interpreted it as it being a boy. Upon looking at the document just to make sure, the couple saw that they are actually going to have a baby girl. The viewers took to criticizing the baker for their mistake. Such viewers also wanted to blame Stephanie’s appointed baker. However, she quickly clears the air after a viewer asks why the cake wasn’t delivered to them in a box. 

    “Because this was a homemade cake from our close friend from down the street of our small town in Northshore Hawai’i who is not a baker but was kind enough to take on the challenge because we didn’t want anyone else to be part of this journey with us but her,” she wrote. “She put it on a cake stand because that’s what she had at home and we love it! We love the idea that it was homemade with love. Especially from someone close to us and has never done it before. That’s what made it so special.”

    Viewers Say: ‘A Win is a Win’

    Some viewers can’t help but acknowledge the couple’s wholesome reaction. One viewer writes, “How you guys reacted to this really solidifies what good parents you’ll be!!” In a similar fashion, another viewer shares, “This is parenthood! You passed the test!”

    “It was meant to be an intimate fun moment with just the two of you,” says a third. 

    Some find it sweet how the husband dealt with the news. One viewer focuses on how he proudly stated, “We’re having a boy by the way!” While another adds, “He told the FIRST PERSON HE COULD.” A third praises, “I love this so much. he is SO CHILL.”

    One viewer says, “Someone else should have picked the cake up. i’m glad u weren’t upset though.” Stephanie answers, “Would have not wanted it any other way.”

  • ‘The way you checked the card right away’: Miami woman hosts gender reveal party. She didn’t expect her mom to sabotage her big moment

    A Miami, Florida, woman excitedly pops a balloon at the gender reveal of her unborn baby in front of her loved ones. However, she quickly discovers that her mom pranked her on her special day.

    In a video with over 4.3 million views, TikToker Koko (@embracingembryo) pokes a small balloon on a table, surrounded by friends and family. The balloon pops, revealing a blue background, indicating that her baby is a boy.

    She jumps for joy and can’t contain her excitement. To double-check the results, she reaches for a paper across the table. Then she realizes there’s a mistake.

    Did her mom purposely sabotage the gender reveal?

    She can barely rip the envelope open as her hands shake with excitement. She kneels to the ground and tears open the paper.

    She sees a paper with the words, “It’s a girl.” Koko yells, “Mama,” in a disappointed tone and throws the paper to the ground. Unable to contain her disappointment after her initial reaction, she walks away from her party.

    On-screen text reads, “You think you can hurt me? My mom purposely put the wrong gender at my own reveal.” The caption continues, “All I wanted was a beautiful moment. I didn’t expect it to end in tears.”

    Like many major life events, such as baby showers, bachelorette parties, and weddings, gender reveal parties can bring out the worst in attendees and hosts alike. The Mary Sue previously reported that another Florida woman’s mom revealed her child’s gender at her reveal party, drawing attention away from the mom-to-be.

    How did viewers react to the reveal?

    In the comments, some viewers questioned whether Koko was more disappointed with the actual gender of her unborn child or the prank.

    “The hate girls receive before they’re even born is crazy,” one writes.

    “I thought we all just want a healthy baby,” another says.

    Gender disappointment is relatively common. Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Louann Brizendine tells TODAY that around 1 in 5 pregnant women experience some degree of disappointment after finding out the gender of their baby.

    However, others come to Koko’s defense, saying her mom was out of line for ruining the gender reveal.

    “A gender reveal is NOTTT the time for playing, jokes whatever. Everrr,” a commenter says.

    “She wasn’t upset it was a girl she’s upset her mom literally ruined her gender reveal,” another writes.

    “I could understand being upset, not because the gender was different, but bc the moment was stolen. She wanted her initial reaction to be THE reaction. You can’t redo it,” a third adds.

  • ‘This is like blowing someone else’s birthday candles’: Florida mom-to-be hosts gender reveal party. She had no idea someone else would reveal it instead

    Nothing says “it’s not about you” quite like your mom hijacking your gender reveal. A Florida mom-to-be thought she was about to pop the confetti cannon and find out her baby’s gender. That is, until her own mother swooped in with a mystery balloon and stole the show. When the dust (and pink confetti) settled, TikTok viewers were left cringing. They called it “the ultimate case of main-character syndrome” and compared it to “blowing out someone else’s birthday candles.”

    What Happened at This Gender Reveal Party?

    While the initial TikTok showing the reveal has received almost 30 million views, Gianna’s (@gianna.wulf) behind-the-scenes clip is quickly gaining traction and looking to overtake the first video with 20 million views in just two days. The first video had viewers quickly enraged, but the second clip seems to be hitting differently with people who are experienced with dealing with entitled and narcissistic behavior.

    The minute-long clip starts off with Gianna and her husband each holding a confetti cannon at what seems to be a backyard gender reveal party. As they’re about to reveal the colors, in the background, the mother says, “Screw everybody,” and immediately enters the frame of the video holding a black balloon. As she settles beside the couple, someone in the crowd asks her to “Get out of the picture,” but the mother indignantly responds: “No, I gotta get in it! I got something going on, nosey!” 

    With the mother duly ignored, the attention is back on the couple as the crowd counts down from 10. The cannon pops, and both blue and pink confetti fill the air. Of course, confusion quickly ensues. Gianna’s face is incredulous as she immediately understands what is happening. Lo and behold, the mother pops the black balloon and–this time–only pink confetti can be seen. According to Gianna, her mother just stole the spotlight.

    Is this attention-seeking?

    The entire cringey scene has gotten 12,000 comments with people citing boundaries needing to be established–ASAP. 

    One comment says, “Time to set boundaries early.” While another says, “She’s going to try and be in the delivery room and demand to hold the baby first. Set the boundaries now mama.”

    Other viewers are saddened to see a mom’s special moment stolen right from under her. One viewer says, “This is actually really sad. You only get that moment once and she took that from you even if her intentions were pure.” However, maybe the intention wasn’t pure to begin with, as another viewer says, “This is so sad, who makes someone else’s pregnancy about themself???”

    A gender reveal can be extremely important for a couple, and seeing how Gianna and her husband had planned to reveal it together, the mother swooping in is a big blow. As one commenter put it, “I’m so sorry she took that moment from you.”

    What did Gianna say?

    In an email to the Mary Sue, Gianna shared that this behavior was typical of her mother. According to her, the mother would think it would be something “great and exciting.” Whereas Gianna believes it’s more about seeking attention.

    “I have confronted my mom about her actions,” she said, writing that, “No matter what she’ll believe she did nothing wrong even if I tell her I feel that she did.”

    Gianna continued that the whole situation didn’t really bother her because “it’s expected.”

    “If I really knew that she was this big of a problem, I wouldn’t have had her as the gender keeper,” she wrote. “But no matter what, she’s my mom. I know that she has good intentions, regardless of how they come out. Along with the fact that I was so happy I was having a girl I could never be mad.”

    As for whether she agrees with viewers condemning her mom’s actions, Gianna said “everyone is allowed to have their own opinion.”

    “Regardless of how people portrayed her actions, this is not even close to a reason to ever cut off my mom,” Gianna concluded. “We are still very close and maybe that’s why I deal with the things that she does we fight and we get over it. We don’t hold grudges.”
