    Em Beihold has been a mainstay on our playlists ever since her song ‘Numb Little Bug’ came out, so it is no surprise that her artistry is displayed in her newest song ‘Hot Goblin.’ We were lucky enough to chat with Em about ‘Hot Goblin,’ the thematic through lines of her recent music, ‘Numb Little Bug,’ and so much more!

    Hi Em! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us! To start us off, how would you describe your music to someone who is tuning in for the first time? 
    Hello hello! Thanks for having me! I like to describe my music as quirky piano pop that talks about difficult things with a certain degree of levity. I’ve also been described as a popified Regina Spektor, and I really like that description. 

    ‘Hot Goblin’ is your latest track! The lyric video felt like stepping into a fairy tale book. When crafting this track, was the inspiration immediately tied to that aesthetic?
    Not really! When I was writing the song, I was initially thinking more along the lines of the experience of being a woman and how fickle our relationship with confidence can be. The fairytale stuff came after and felt obvious once the concept was solidified. 

    Something that immediately drew us to ‘Hot Goblin’ was the vulnerability hidden within this musically upbeat pop track, the understanding of insecurities, but the ability to still find confidence in that. What do writing sessions look like for a song that presents vulnerability in this way?
    I think my co-writers Nick Lopez, Jason Suwito, and I had a lot of fun figuring out what the term “hot goblin” means. As a girl who definitely feels the pressure to constantly present as put-together, fashionable, hot, etc. (especially from social media), it felt freeing to put a name to the feeling of embracing your insecurities and messy parts while still loving yourself completely and not feeling less than. 
    I also wanted the song to be about that feeling on top of the world one day and at the bottom the next, so ‘Hot Goblin’ became a way to give language to that cycle. Nick has been a close friend since we wrote ‘Numb Little Bug’ together, and Jason came into my life during a rough patch in my career, so there was already a lot of trust in the room. After we laughed about the phrase “hot goblin,” which I brought into the session (kind of as a joke), they both got it and locked in immediately. That balance of humor and honesty made the writing process really special. I write my favorite songs when I’m laughing.

    ‘Brutus’ is another recent release of yours! This track features some of our favorite visuals from you yet! Where did the creative vision for this video come from? And what was that on-set experience like?
     I was really inspired by the movie Amadeus, which my mom showed me when I was going through an intense, unforgiving period of depression, where I couldn’t stop comparing myself to other female artists who were creatively unblocked and more successful than me. I related to the character of Salieri and thought it would be fun to bring that rivalry with Mozart as a vignette alongside a few others to tell the story of what I was feeling. The on-set experience is one I will never forget because it was a day full of fun and laughter with friends, which felt SO full circle after a year of essentially crying every day and hating being in my skin. I was so happy to be me and felt so proud of the art that came out of such a hard time. I also checked off two big goals of mine, which were: one, working with my co-director, Ethan Frank, whom I’ve been a huge fan of for years, and two, fencing in a music video since I was a competitive fencer for many years.

    With both ‘Hot Goblin’ and ‘Brutus,’ the themes around the visuals are locked into days of old, with fairy tales and gladiator times. Is there an intentional through line there? 
    You know what; accidentally yes. It wasn’t intentional, but I think the whole album has puzzle-pieced itself together more than I planned for. It’s whimsical, it has hints of classical music, and instruments like the harpsichord! There’s definitely some fun “historical” stuff in there. 

    Egg in the Backseat came out three years ago! Is there a song on that record that, for you, has just gotten better with time?
    I would say ‘Goo,’ because my fans have really taken to that one at my live shows. It’s kind of a sleeper, dare I say!

    We, of course, have to briefly touch on ‘Numb Little Bug!’ Now that you are three years separated from the release of the track, how has your relationship to this song changed as time has gone on? 
    Oh my gosh! I wrote that song about my unfortunate experience with antidepressants, and now (after lots of trial and error), I’ve found one that has absolutely changed my life. It’s a cool marker of where I was then, and how much I’ve grown. I will always appreciate the response to that song and how much it changed my life.

    Once again, thank you so much for chatting with us! Before we let you go, what can fans look forward to as we close out 2025?
    My debut album is coming out very soon in 2026! It’s the proudest I’ve ever been of anything I’ve made. It’s about my journey through depression, experiencing complete loss of self, and how I have come out on the other side to be the happiest and most me I have ever been. It’s fun and pop and silly, and I’m ready for 2025 to be done so I can finally share this new music with my fans!

    Em Beihold: An Interview With An Understated Popstar

    For Em Beihold, the intention was never to become a popstar. It was never on her radar that she’d tour (spoiler alert: she’s currently touring), she never dreamt that millions of fans would stream her music (they have), or that she’d even be recording her songs.

    Music has called for Em Beihold her entire life. It started when she saw a piano in the window and begged her parents to buy it for her. They’d let her, but only if she practiced, and she admits to me with a laugh that she wasn’t very good,

    “I started playing the piano when I was 6 because I thought cool kids played instruments,” Beihold confesses. “So I started with classical music and then got bored and wanted to see where the notes would go.”

    From there, the piano evolved into not only an instrument to conquer, but a tool to help Em explore the world of music. After working with a teacher, who showed her the world of writing and introduced her ears to artists like Regina Spektor and Fiona Apple, the rest just falls into place.

    “Growing up, the piano felt like my therapy, my journal, my closest friend.”

    And as Em continued to grow up teaching music, she dreamt of making sync songs until she graduated high school (from her living room, she adds) during the pandemic in 2020. But everything changes with the rise of TikTok, an app capable of making your dreams come true and ruining the dreams of others.

    Relatably, Beihold admits that she joined TikTok because her crush was posting at the time. But beyond a bit of doom-scrolling on her crush’s account, Em quickly realized that this app leveled the playing field. Unlike YouTube, she mentions, you didn’t need a certain amount of followers to get a certain amount of views. Game on.

    “I secretly wanted to be an artist, but never let myself say it because I didn’t think it was feasible. I never dreamt that I’d be going on tour or anything like that.”

    It didn’t take long for the world to fall in love with Em Beihold’s bitingly honest lyricism, her crisp vocal range that transcends timelessness, and her natural talent of writing what we’re all feeling.

    When she released her first major label debut single, “Numb Little Bug”, which delves into her struggles of feeling nothing while on anti-depressants, fans were instantly captivated by her candid approach to mental health. But the success of “Numb Little Bug” didn’t mean Em wanted to be pigeon-holed into becoming the poster child for mental health music.

    “When ‘Numb Little Bug’ came out, I was always bracing for the fall,”

    After watching it climb to a million streams on Spotify in less than a day, Beihold remembers being frantic about it. While viral moments are amazing, she tells me how it can be hard to keep up with them when kicking off her career. But, nonetheless, 2022 was booked from there on out.

    She tells me how she’s always written about what she’s feeling- there’s no intention to be funny, or brutally honest, or mean- it’s just whatever is coming out at the time. One thing is for sure: Em Beihold’s music is deserving of the popstardom she didn’t allow herself to dream of…and it’s why she earned opening spots for acts like AJR, King Princess, and Lewis Capaldi. It’s especially why she’s in the midst of her very own headline tour.

    Her music led her to other artists like Lauren Spencer Smith and GAYLE, where they created what Em refers to as “Bang Bang Part Two” with their hit song “Fantasy.” The song’s a scathing breakup anthem- written in LA by the trio as they talked about boys and scrolled through Instagram- Beihold shares that the session was special because it didn’t feel like they were really writing a track, just hanging out.

    Aside from her own music, she hopped on Stephen Sanchez’s hit track, “Until I Found You”- a dreamy, nostalgic blend of their two voices on a timeless love song. She admits that she doesn’t write about love very much, so when she went to write her verse, she was surprised to find it happened in less than a day.

    They had created the song without meeting, coming together for the first time to perform at the Moroccan Lounge. The song worked so well that fans continue to speculate the pair are dating (despite the fact that she has a boyfriend who isn’t Sanchez).

    But her new music is where she shines the most, where she’s on her own and staying true to her songwriting. She credits a team that helps uplift her abilities and letting her shine in areas she’s strong in. With a plethora of instruments in her repertoire including the ukulele, the piano, the guitar, and more, Beihold can continue to surprise us with her music.

    Her most recent single, “Maybe Life Is Good”, is a bit of a sonic shift for her: upbeat, a pop number with a hint of rock, about dreaming of better days. Written during a rough patch in Beihold’s life, the song was more of an aspiration than a reality at the time of writing. You can listen to the song here:

    “‘Maybe Life Is Good’ was a bit of a lifeline. I was writing about what, at the time, wasn’t what I was feeling- which was optimism and positivity. So writing that song was a life vest for me.”

    As for the future, Em Beihold is currently on her very own Maybe Life Is Good tour, where $1 per ticket will go towards Active Minds, an organization that brings mental health services to college campuses, and there will be stands set up at every show. She teases surprise guests, special songs, and an overall amazing time.

    Throughout this interview, Em Beihold has been humble, thoughtful, and insightful, which is exactly reflected in her music. As she rises further into popstardom, it’ll be no surprise.

    Every few weeks, I get the same text from one of my friends: “Jai, I need new music. I’m tired of my rotation of usual playlists.” And to be honest, a little sigh emits from my mouth every time…why? Because I have a Weekend Playlist article every. Single. Week.

    I compile all of the latest, greatest new songs that are featured on Apple Music and Spotify- covering the lesser known tunes to new Taylor Swift. Honestly, no one in my inner circle should be lost for new music because that means they’re not reading my articles and, subsequently, that would mean I need new friends.

    While your choice of streaming service may have curated playlists based on your music taste, and a plethora of other options to find music…it can be daunting, and time consuming, to go through everything and find the songs you truly want to add to your playlist. That’s where I come in.

    Each week is a different selection of songs, and I guarantee you you’ll come out of these articles with at least one new banger to play for your friends. A wide range of genres, artists, and sounds, the Weekend Playlist is meant to get you through these arduous weeks. The good news? There’s always another to look forward to.

    So, without wasting anymore of our precious time here, I’ve got a ton of music to share with you this week! Let’s get listening!

    Rosie Darling- “I’m Different Now” 

    With elements of Phoebe Bridgers, Rosie Darling has a soft, introspective voice that haunts and seeps into your soul. “I’m Different Now” exhibits her beautiful, delicate vocals and talks about the part of life where you are moving on from someone who no longer serves you. It’s looking back at a relationship that maybe wasn’t all you thought it was.

    “I’m Different Now” is about getting to the other side of a difficult relationship. What’s awesome is that even though healing is messy and scary, it paves the way for a more mature, more refined self to take the space of what once was. It is learning to sit with who you’re becoming despite knowing that your old self still lingers, almost like a ghost following you around.”

    Joe P- “Glass House” 

    Joe P has been teasing “Glass House” for a while now across social media platforms. Frequently called “Dinosaur Bones” by fans before the single was announced, “Glass House” was highly demanded…and Joe is finally answering their call. With “Glass House”, you get the classic electric guitar, alternative sound that he has spent time refining and perfecting. It’s about losing someone and finding pieces of them wherever you go, and it does not disappoint.

    “To me, this song is about the physical proof we leave behind in the wake of relationships,” says Joe P. “A lot of my friends talk about how they unfollow someone on socials because they don’t want to see them anymore. We have these little moments when we’re reminded of something/someone and that nostalgia can trick us into believing feelings still exist where they don’t.”

    Chelsea Cutler- Stellaria 

    Chelsea Cutler is our featured artist of the week with her third studio album: Stellaria. A reflection of life post-pandemic, Cutler tackles grappling with mental health and self-image, healing and love. She brings an honest approach to songwriting as she continues to grow as an artist, producer, and songwriter.

    “I had just turned 23 and COVID started. I was about to turn 26 by the time things felt more normal. It was like I fell asleep at 23 and woke up at 25, and the whole world was different. I spent a lot of time wondering, ‘Am I going to feel like myself again or a new iteration of myself?’ I tried to write a song to get reacquainted with myself and love this new person post-pandemic.”

    Lewis OfMan- “Frisco Blues” 

    If a song could be the end of the summer, it would be “Frisco Blues.” With a melancholic background track, you’ll find yourself reminiscing on old times, lost love, and the end of the season. Sampling “Frisco Disco,” all Lewis OfMan needed was an acoustic guitar to complete the track…and it’s perfect.

    “The song was inspired by a bus ride from Florence to Marseille in one day back in December 2021. We were driving across the south of France, the vibe in the bus was nice, students, kids playing cards, I was listening to an obscure Jim Morrison interview, watching the cold sunset on the hills, good spirit. A few days later I was in the countryside only with an acoustic guitar and an Ensoniq Sampler with this sample of a song called ‘Frisco Disco’ I’d found at A1 record in NYC.”

    Em Beihold- “Pedestal”

    One of both my favorite songs and artists on this list, Em Beihold delivers a cheeky breakup track centered around a ukulele sound. Her vocal range is unmatched, and her biting lyrics are contrasted by the light, acoustic-heavy track about moving on after putting someone on a pedestal for so long.

    “I’m so excited to be announcing my first ever headline tour and to also be dropping “Pedestal”this week,” says Em. “I’ve been touring “Pedestal” for a couple years now and it’s the last songof that era of music for me, so it feels full circle to announce a new beginning at the same timeas closing an old chapter. So much fun, truly 2024 couldn’t come any faster!”

    Blu DeTiger- “Cut Me Down”


    A fun upbeat collaboration between Blu DeTiger and Mallrat, “Cut Me Down” shows the difficult side of relationships. With lyrics like “every time you cut me down, I just laugh it off” and “I wonder who you think you are”, Blu DeTiger and Mallrat sing about being degraded and put down by someone who doesn’t value them. The synth-y, club beat in the background make this song suitable for nights out or long runs as well.

    “I feel like this song is a nice evolution for me and a side of me that people haven’t heard, but the soul-full chords and movement of the bassline anchor it in the Blu DeTiger sound. This is one of the most melodic and moving bass parts I’ve written, and it follows and supports the vocals in a really cool way.”

    Until The Ribbon Breaks- “Nature Mother” 

    Until The Ribbon Breaks has a soulful voice that punches into this track, an overview of our roles in society and in nature. It’s contemplative, pensive, and daunting all at the same time, combining complex metaphors with a soulful Hozier-esque tone. “Nature Mother” with Emoni Wilkins belting at the end is a masterpiece.

    “If there was a single lyric that encompassed the whole feeling that I have – and where I’ve been emotionally and why I even made this record – it’s that chorus. It specifically talks about our role in nature and our role to each other: ‘Wild is the wind. Rage is the sea. If it’s in me, it’s in me, it’s our nature mother.’

    On July 14, Lauren Spencer Smith will release her debut album, Mirror. It’s the culmination of three years of hard work and growing as a songwriter and performer.

    Appearing on American Idol in 2020, the 19-year-old used the momentum from the show to create a career that’s earned her hit songs, a huge social media following, and an appearance on The Tonight Show. Many know the Vancouver native for “Fingers Crossed,” but she’s built a surprisingly deep catalog with tracks like “Flowers” and “Fantasy,” a collaboration with friends GAYLE and Em Beihold.

    The day the album drops, she’ll kick off a headlining tour. The North American leg begins in Chicago, and the European shows start in early September. Several dates are already sold out.

    There’s a constant stream of new songs every week, and I’m here to give you your ultimate weekend playlist with the best new music out there. If you’re looking for something to freshen up your Spotify or Apple Music repertoire…here’s my picks for this week’s Friday Playlist!

    Lewis Capaldi “Wish You The Best”

    Lewis Capaldi is one of music’s greatest voices right now. With crooning vocals and lyrics to shatter anyone’s heart…”Wish You The Best” is a Capaldi classic. A breakup anthem that is soon to hit radio stations on repeat, “WYTB” is everything a fan could ask for and more.

    Hot off a new documentary, a few new singles, and a busy 2023, Lewis’ new single is the perfect relaxing intro to your weekend playlist.

    Ice Spice, Nicki Minaj “Princess Diana”

    To get the party started, we have Queen Nicki Minaj pairing with Princess Ice Spice on Ice Spice’s “Princess Diana.” Ice Spice has quickly risen to stardom in the music world, gaining respect and recognition from some of the world’s biggest rappers. Her face is seen on billboards everywhere following her TikTok famous track “Boy’s A Liar.”

    “Princess Diana” is the track that makes you want to get up and dance with your friends. It’s ready for pregame playlists across the country, and just in time for a great weekend.

    Lauren Spencer Smith ft. GAYLE and Em “Fantasy”

    Lauren Spencer Smith knows a thing or two about toxic relationships. Combine her talent with GAYLE, who wrote breakup anthem “abcdefu” and Em Beihold, and you have yourself a hit record. It’s empowering, it’s refreshing, and it’s worthy of a listen.

    Spencer Smith is the breakthrough act of 2022, and “Fantasy” solidifies that. She’s a talented singer-songwriter who can relate to any listener.

    Austin Millz, ESTELLE “Freeway”

    DJ Austin Millz has released EDM banger “Freeway” with the legendary ESTELLE. You may know ESTELLE’s vocals from “American Boy (ft. Kanye West)”, but “Freeway” takes you to a whole new world of dance beats and club vibes. It could make anyone feel like they’re at a club in Ibiza.

    You won’t want to miss Austin Millz this year, who has already had a few major singles. “Freeway” is all good vibes and makes you feel the way music should: like an escape to a far away oasis.

    Quinn XCII, “Georgia Peach”

    With Quinn XCII’s smooth vocals and his even catchier lyrics, “Georgia Peach” is your summer anthem. It’s perfectly paired with a glass of wine on the beach, reminiscent of good times. It literally makes you want to go outside and have fun.

    An accompanying music video with TikTok’s finest @Octopusslover8 (Jake Shane) and an upcoming tour in May with A R I Z O N A and Julia Wolf, it truly is the summer of Quinn. He talked about his new album,

    Lyn Lapid, “poster boy”

    20 year-old Lyn Lapid is making a name for herself in the music industry right now. With a sophomore EP lurking in the shadows, “poster boy” is the latest single from a much-anticipated body of work. Her previous single “Do U Really” enforces Lyn Lapid’s insane talent.

    Lyn was discovered after launching her mega-successful TikTok page, which garnered 1 billion views and 5 million followers in no time. “poster boy” is the perfect introduction to Lyn’s music..not to be missed.
