A Louisville man incarcerated at Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex in West Liberty is dead and Kentucky State Police suspect foul play, the agency said in a news release.

According to KSP, corrections officers found 34-year-old Robert A. Broyles unresponsive in his cell during morning count on Aug. 31, 2025. He was transported to a hospital where he was declared dead shortly after arrival.

KSP said while the preliminary investigation “reveals that foul play is suspected,” they said that is “subject to change” as their investigation mores forward.

The agency did not release information on the sentence Broyles was serving and Kentucky’s online offender database did not list Broyles as of Monday morning.

However, according to online court records, a 34-year-old Louisville man with a similar name was sentenced to one year in prison last year after pleading guilty to theft-related charges.

Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex is a medium security prison about 160 miles east of Louisville. The facility housed more than 1,700 inmates as of Aug. 28, the latest day for which Kentucky Department of Corrections data is available.
