A shooting at a Texas casino left two dead and five injured, and officials say the accused gunman has been captured following a police pursuit.

A large crowd was gathered for a raffle event at the Lucky Eagle Casino, in Eagle Pass, when shots rang out before midnight Saturday, Sept. 27, KABB reported. Authorities arrived at the scene, on the Kickapoo reservation, but authorities said the shooter was gone, having fled in black pickup truck.

The accused gunman was caught nearly 8 hours later near Stockdale, in Wilson County, the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office said in a Sept. 28 news release. Stockdale is a roughly 180-mile drive northeast from Eagle Pass

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies joined a pursuit already underway involving state troopers. The suspect’s vehicle was “partially disabled” by gunfire from troopers, who tried to stop the driver at an area gas station.

“The suspect was successfully taken into custody … after a successful PIT maneuver and Taser deployment,” the sheriff’s office said.

The accused shooter has been identified as 34-year-old Keryan Jones, police told KSAT. Police said the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas Police Department is working to have Jones extradited back to Eagle Pass.

As of the afternoon of Sept. 28, officials have not said what may have motivated the shooting.

“On behalf of the Eagle Pass Police Department, our hearts go out to the families and friends of those lost in this tragic incident,” the department said. “We continue to keep the injured in our thoughts and prayers and we ask our lord to bless and guide the hands of those working to bring them healing and comfort.”

Eagle Pass is about a 140-mile drive southwest from San Antonio.

    • A shooting broke out at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino early Sunday morning
    • Police are still seeking to apprehend the shooter
    • Two people are dead, with more in critical condition

A brand new Mercedes E350 was given away at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel in Eagle Pass, TX, late Saturday night. The “Mercedes September to Remember” promotion fun at the tribal casino along the Mexican border quickly ended moments later when a mass shooting broke out.

Local media reports that gunshots began just after midnight, around 12:15 am local time on early Sunday morning. Maverick County Judge Ramsey English Cantu said in a Facebook post that the shooting occurred in the parking lot, though commenters claiming to be there claimed the event began inside the casino. Photos on social media showed gaming machines with bullet holes.

Law enforcement says two people were killed, and at least seven were shot. One of the fatalities was pronounced dead on the scene. The other was reportedly pronounced dead while in transport to a nearby hospital.

A local NBC News affiliate reported that “at least two to four others” were airlifted in critical condition to San Antonio hospitals. The Lucky Eagle Casino is about 150 miles south of San Antonio in Eagle Pass along the Texas-Mexico border. The casino hotel is owned and operated by the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas.

    Benz Promo Had Casino Bustling

The Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino is the largest gaming facility in Texas. The Class I and II Indian casino offers more than 3,300 slot-like electronic bingo-based gaming machines along with bingo and poker.

Only hours before the deadly shooting, a lucky winner, who opted to go only by the name “A.C.,” was the big winner of the Mercedes-Benz E350. The day-long promo began again at 1 pm with a $2,500 cash prize. Lucky Rewards members with their player’s card inserted in a machine had the chance to win $1,000 every hour from 2 pm until 9 pm. The Benz was given away at 10:30 pm, and a $3,500 cash grand finale was awarded at 11:45 pm.

The Mercedes and cash giveaways had the Lucky Eagle Casino even busier than normal for a Saturday night. The shooting suspect remained at large as of Sunday morning at 6:30 local time. The assailant reportedly made his getaway in a black Nissan Frontier truck.

I want to reassure our community that all law enforcement agencies are working jointly, in unison with our local, state, and federal partners, to carry out a non-stop investigation into this situation. Tribal Police, Maverick County Sheriff’s Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Eagle Pass Police Department, Texas Rangers, Border Patrol, and FBI Law Enforcement agencies are working round-the-clock to ensure the safety of our community, and above all, to bring justice against the individual responsible for this crime,” Cantu said.

“When is enough, enough? We must come together and put an end to the senseless gun violence that continues to plague our country and society. Maverick County deserves safety, peace, and unity — and we will keep fighting for it,” Cantu added.

    Border Violence

Eagle Pass, the county seat of Maverick County, is a border city on the Rio Grande known for its military outpost and being a key port of entry between the US and Mexico. Eagle Pass has been at the center of recent migration challenges, including the 2024 standoff between the federal government and the State of Texas.

Despite its logistical challenges, Eagle Pass is considered a relatively safe place to live. Data shows that crime and homicide rates are lower than the national average.

Earlier this week, the Texas National Guard took control of Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, a city property where mass illegal crossings have been occurring.

They are restricting Border Patrol from accessing the area, claiming that federal agents “perpetuate illegal crossings.”

Two US officials confirmed the move to CBS News, which reported that Border Patrol agents had “used the park in recent weeks to hold migrants in an outdoor staging area before they are transported for further processing, including last month, when illegal crossings soared to record levels.”

“They are denying entry to Border Patrol agents to conduct our duties,” one official told the network, adding that they are not sure “what authority (Texas officials) have over the federal government.”

Texas National Guard Blocking Border Patrol

The Texas Military Department has confirmed that the National Guard has deployed armed soldiers and vehicles to block federal government access to the park in Eagle Pass.

Texas informed federal officials that no Border Patrol agents would be allowed to enter Shelby Park in any operational capacity.

Fox News reporter Griff Jenkins posted a video showing BP agents being prevented from entering the area.

“The current posture is to prepare for future illegal immigrant surges and to restrict access to organizations that perpetuate illegal immigrant crossings in the park and greater Eagle Pass area,” a statement from the Texas Military Department reads.

They’re accusing the federal government of aiding and abetting illegal immigrants from entering the country.

The Joe Biden administration is responsible for a record-breaking surge at the border even as they insist that “our approach…is working” and that the “border is secure.”

It’s clear the Texas National Guard disagrees with that assertion, taking matters into its own hands.

This Isn’t The First Clash Between Texas And The Feds

This isn’t the first time the Texas National Guard got into a dispute with Biden’s Border Patrol agents, and it likely won’t be the last.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott was furious after seeing video of Border Patrol agents opening a gate at the southern border and allowing dozens of illegal immigrants into the country after Texas National Guard officers had locked it shut.

The incident took place in August of 2022.

Abbott described the footage as “unbelievable.”

In May of 2023, stunning video footage showed a United States Army soldier reportedly opening a gate and allowing a large crowd of illegal immigrants across the border onto private property in Texas.

That incident took place in the same location in Eagle Pass, Texas.

The Political Insider recently covered social media videos showing a sea of illegal immigrants numbering in the thousands waiting to be “processed” in Eagle Pass.

There were 302,000 encounters along the southwest border in December, marking the highest monthly total ever recorded as Biden’s border crisis rages on.
