    He has been the tough guy who matured into the grumpy old man persona which movie watchers seem to connect.  A storied career, he has won numerous awards, become an icon, lobbied for causes and not been afraid of a fight.  But does Robert De Niro consume weed and just chill?  Does he even have time?

    Born in 1943, his last part was in Nada in 2023 at 80, but has the political thriller mini series Zero Day coming soon from Netflix.  He had a creative partnership Martin Scorsese which helped define his legacy. His first Scorsese ht was  Mean Streets where he played “Johnny Boy” Civello, a small time criminal working his way up into a local mob, he threw himself into the role. Then he lost himself in the role of Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver.Working with Francis Ford Coppola he become Vito Corleone in the Godfather II, cementing him as a strong mean in the public’s eye. The intensity of what he brought to the role is legendary.  Luckily, marijuana has helped.

    Sometimes it is used to chill, sometimes it comes from a darker place. De Niro fell for weed after a couple of bong hits while filming Jackie Brown, it delayed filming as the actor and the bong were close for a couple of days. Maybe it is his consuming habit which let this humor and wit come out in movies like Meet the Parents.

    In the medical field, De Niro battled prostate cancer and resumed his career. Cannabis has been a benefit for cancer patients helping them manage treatment symptoms and the chronic pain.

    De Niro has made a fortune in his career playing tough guys, some with a heart.  In 2006,  De Niro received Italian citizenship.  The Sons of Italy opposed the movie based on the believe the actor damaged the public image of Italians by portraying criminals.

    Most people get in a groove with consumption – be it alcohol or cannabis – but sometimes you want to go big

    Roughly 88%+ of the population get into some type of routine….morning, sleep, weekend, dressing all are part of a system mentally developed.  Another routine includes eating habits,  which can be positive or negative.  And, some people fall into a consumption routine – both with alcohol or cannabis.  California sober is upending some of the routine.  But is a long weekend a good time to try something new? Are you ready for to have stronger marijuana.

    Most people get comfortable with how they feel and set their consumption based on it…but a few times a year, people want to go big. With alcohol, there is general knowledge, but with marijuana, here are some things to know if you want to up your dosage. Most strong strains are used for pain control or for a medical purposes. For fun, the average dose is 5 mg, some go up to 10 mg.  So what can you expect from 10+ mg?

    Like alcohol, increasing the dosage of marijuana can have positive and some negative effects. High-potency increased the “journey”, more intense feelings, experiences and sensations. If you are new to a more intense journey, have a conversations with your bud tender so you can understand the nuances. You might also consider using a strain which has a bit of CBD in it to even out the high. Low to medium dose strains can relax you and reduce anxiety. There is a risk with strong strains of becoming anxious or a bit paranoid.

    If smoking or vaping, the high tends to peak from 10-25 minutes after consumption and typically last 1 to 3 hours, though they can linger for up to 8 hours.  So don’t plan to drive or do anything serious.

    If things go off the rails a bit or you start to feel uncomfortable, don’t panic, things will work out.  There are things you can do to come down from a high…including drinking water, eat, take a shower and then take a long nap.

    The concept of popping open a beer after work was ingrained in the boomer generation as a way to relax and shake off the troubles of the day.  But younger millennials and Gen Z have a different take.  As seen in fully legal states, beer sales are down, and in recent research, they are moving to cannabis.  So how much marijuana to take to be happy and shake it off?

    Different generations chill and relax in different ways.  Earlier boomers had cocktails, late boomers and Gen X had illicit weed, valium and drinks, now the youngest adults are moving to vaping and gummies.  While it should not be done too regularly, sometimes the world just gives you a rough go.  Whether a jerk at work, car trouble or just a full flung case of the grumpies, sometimes you need a distraction.  But how much of a dose should take to be happy?

    First, you need to make sure it isn’t a daily habit, addiction is no joke and problems can occur.  But on this days when you just want to kick back and chill after a hard day, what do you do. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Chicago report low levels tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the main psychoactive compound in marijuana, does reduce stress, but in a highly dose-dependent manner: very low doses lessened the jitters of a public-speaking task, while slightly higher doses — enough to produce a mild “high” — actually increased anxiety.

    Consumer data shows the younger generation is leaning into a few hits of a vape or a gummy or two Monday – Wednesday.  Rather than have the hangover, the calories, and the alcohol high, they want something smoother and less fattening.

    If you a canna newbie or an occasionally user, a mild relaxant could be about 2.5 mg.  if you want to up it, 2.5-5 mg. work.  For the more frequent use mild would go to 2.5-5 mg and to increase it would be 5-10 mg.  Products purchased in a dispensary have a labels with dosage to help you manage.

    You can also chat with the bud tender.  A little trial and error can help you figure out what you want to relax and find your happy spot.

    Better grasp on your dosage

    Consistent doses are difficult to achieve when smoking weed. When rolling a joint or a blunt, these can end up coming out in different sizes, containing different grams of weed. When packing a bong, there’s always the same bowl, which allows for consistency and keeping better track of how much you smoke without having to count the amount of puffs you take.

    A cleaner space

    The easiest way to consume is a vape or gummies, but a bong has advantages also.  Smoking requires something for ashes, a strong smell and generally a bit more mess, a bong can be both attractive in the space and be cleaner.

    An easy way to clean a bong is to use rubbing alcohol and sea salt. Soak it for a while and then jostle it around. Rinse really well, let dry and put it away until next time.

    Longer lasting marijuana

    Bongs are more efficient when it comes to prolonging your weed. Since you consume so much smoke per hit, they tend to get you high faster, with less puffs than if you were smoking a joint or blunt.

    Vitamin B12 is not made by plants or animals, but by microbes blanketing the earth. We presumably used to get B12 when we drank out of a mountain stream or sipped water from a well, based on studies showing vegetarians in developing countries who drink purified water appear to be at higher risk. Now, we typically chlorinate our water supply to kill off any bacteria. So, most of us don’t get a lot of B12 in our water anymore, but we don’t get a lot of cholera, either. That’s a benefit of living in a much more sanitary world. Vegetarians living in slums in lesser developed regions appear to have fewer B12 problems, though. Basically, the more hygienic our meals, the less B12 we get. Our fellow great apes, like gorillas, get all the B12 they need eating their own feces. I prefer supplements. So, how much should we get, which type is best, and how can we tell if we have a B12 deficiency?

    The Benefits of Vitamin B12

    We cannot mess around with getting vitamin B12. If we don’t get enough, we may face a wide range of disorders of the gut, blood, brain, and nervous system.

    Many case reports detail ways B12 can be life-changing. For instance, a 47-year-old woman had a five-year history of psychosis. She had been treated with antipsychotic drugs and was cognitively impaired and reported visual hallucinations. After her mother revealed that the patient had been following a strict vegan diet for seven years, vitamin B12 supplementation was started and her symptoms went away. She had lost years of her life lost in a psychotic haze—apparently just because she didn’t want to take a supplement.

    Vitamin B12 supplementation is mandatory for anyone eating plant-based diets and, as I’ll discuss later, for every one of us from age 65.

    Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Symptoms and Treatment

    As I discuss in my video The Symptoms of Vitamin B12 Deficiency, it can cause everything from abdominal distention and chronic diarrhea to shortness of breath and swollen, red, painful feet. It can also cause Parkinson’s syndrome–like symptoms, skin darkening (that resolved with supplementation), and bilateral useless hand syndrome, a condition I had never heard of before.

    Being deficient in B12 may also manifest in a variety of neurological symptoms—for example, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, muscle cramps, dizziness, cognitive disturbances, difficulty walking, and erectile dysfunction—as well as fatigue and such psychiatric symptoms as depression along with psychosis.

    How can B12 deficiency be treated? Either with B12 supplements or B12-fortified foods.

    Suggested Vitamin B12 Dosage

    The official position of associations and governmental agencies is categorical and unequivocal: Supplementation of vitamin B12 is required for anyone on a vegetarian diet—even when consuming eggs and dairy—and I would extend that to include flexitarians eating only a few servings of meat a week.

    Who else should ensure they have a regular, reliable source of vitamin B12 by supplementing their diet with B12 supplements or B12-fortified foods? Those who’ve had bariatric surgery (which can sometimes impair absorption), those eating plant-based diets, and everyone from the age of 65.

    As I discuss in my video The Optimal Vitamin B12 Dosage for Adults, adults younger than 65 should take at least one 2,000 mcg (µg) supplement once a week, ideally as a chewable, sublingual, or liquid supplement taken on an empty stomach, or at least one 50 mcg (µg) daily supplement. As we age, our ability to absorb vitamin B12 may decline. So, for those 65 and older, the supplementation should probably be increased up to 1,000 mcg (µg) each day, as I discuss in my video The Optimal Vitamin B12 Dosage for Kids, Pregnancy, and Seniors.

    Pregnant and breastfeeding women can just follow my 50 mcg (µg) a day recommendation for nonpregnant adults or take 2,000 mcg (µg) a week, perhaps split into two doses to boost absorption. After infants are weaned, they can start on 5 mcg (µg) a day. From ages 4 through 10, kids can take half the adult dose of 25 mcg (µg) a day, then they can take 50 mcg (µg) a day or 2,000 mcg (µg) a week from age 11.

    Note that these doses are specific to cyanocobalamin, the preferred supplemental form of vitamin B12. (I discuss cyanocobalamin versus methylcobalamin below.)

    The Best Food Sources of Vitamin B12

    If you need supplemental B12 but don’t want to take supplements, you must rely on B12-fortified foods––eating three separate servings of B12-fortified foods a day, each ideally containing at least 190 percent of the “Daily Value” on the product’s nutrition facts label. As I discuss in my video The Healthiest Food Sources of Vitamin B12, B12-fortified nutritional yeast is a common food source, and there are all sorts of other B12-fortified options on the market, including plant-based meats and milks, breakfast cereals, and even energy drinks. 

    The Worst Food Sources of Vitamin B12

    What about various algae-type products, like spirulina, which are advertised as natural vitamin B12 sources? Not only do they not actually contain B12 that’s useable for humans, they may contain B12 analogues—look-alike molecules that can even block your absorption of real B12!

    Can Vitamin B12 Cause Side Effects?

    You don’t have to worry about taking too much vitamin B12. It’s water-soluble. So, at worst, you’ll just end up with more expensive pee. Injectable forms, though, can trigger acne.

    Methylcobalamin vs. Cyanocobalamin

    There are two main types of vitamin B12: methylcobalamin, marketed as methyl B12, and cyanocobalamin, typically marketed as just vitamin B12. Methylcobalamin is more expensive so it must be better, right? Wrong.

    As I discuss in my video The Best Type of Vitamin B12: Cyanocobalamin or Methylcobalamin, cyanocobalamin is the most used form, thanks to its high stability. Methylcobalamin is less stable and particularly susceptible to being destroyed after exposure to light.

    The one major exception may be kidney failure, though. Methylcobalamin may be better for those with impaired kidney function. It’s been speculated that oral methylcobalamin or injected hydroxycobalamin may also be preferable in smokers, though it has yet to be confirmed.

But for those new to using cannabis, understand the strength is key, here is a simple explanation of weed dosage.

    Dosage is similar to alcohol proof. While proof is a measure of the alcohol content of a beverage, dosage indicates strength. New users should lean toward the low side to ensure a good journey or relief (depending on why you are consuming).

    How you consume can also account for the effect, flower, vapes and edibles all hit you a wee bit different. When you consume an edible, the cannabinoids are processed through the liver and stomach, not the lungs, so pay attention to the guide.  It can also take 40-90 minutes to hit, so relax and don’t take more until you have started the trip.

    Here is a general guideline for dosage.

    THC Dosage: 1 – 2.5 mg

    Mild relief of symptoms including pain, stress, and anxiety; heightened focus and creativity. Great for first-time consumers, or more experienced consumers interested in microdosing.

    THC Dosage: 2.5 – 15 mg

    tronger relief of symptoms; euphoria; impacted coordination and perception. Great for stubborn symptoms not affected by smaller doses; potential treatment for sleep issues.

    THC Dosage: 30 – 50 mg

    Strong euphoria; significantly impacted coordination and perception. Great for consumers with a high tolerance for THC, or whose GI systems don’t absorb cannabinoids well.

    THC Dosage: 50 – 100 mg

    Seriously impacted coordination and perception; possible unpleasant side effects including nausea and increased heart rate. This is considered a high dosage appropriate for treating challenging conditions and symptoms, or for those who have high THC tolerance.
