  • Super Bowl weekend brings stepped-Up DUI enforcement across Colorado

    [ad_1]

After 10 DUI arrests in Denver during the AFC Championship weekend, Colorado troopers are ramping up enforcement ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl.

“Every game is mayhem on Denver traffic-wise, and unfortunately, the numbers do go up for that specific night when it comes to arrests and crashes,” said Sgt. Ivan Alvarado, CSP Public Affairs.

With just hours left before the Super Bowl kicks off in Santa Clara, several agencies are teaming up to keep drivers safe on Colorado roads.

    Denver7

As people prepare for another big weekend of football, the Colorado State Patrol says enforcement will look a little different.

CSP says the Super Bowl is not the same as the AFC championship game, where tens of thousands of people flooded downtown Denver just a few weeks ago.

Instead, troopers say today the crowds won’t be as concentrated, rather scattered statewide, but the risk is still there.

CSP has staffed up across the state with a strong focus on the metro area, where troopers say more people, bars, and traffic create a higher chance for impaired driving.

Troopers say they want people to enjoy the Super Bowl, but do so responsibly.

They add that drivers should be on the lookout for common signs of impaired driving, which include swerving, speeding, following too closely, braking erratically, or driving too slowly.

And while CSP will be watching the roads across the state, they can’t do it alone, and they are asking the public to help by reporting suspected DUI drivers.

“All we want people to realize is that the bad decision you make in the middle of having that good time is not going to be a good decision. We are asking to make a plan beforehand because that will be the right decision there,” Sgt. Alvarado said.

CSP does stress the importance of planning well ahead of your gameday festivities. A DUI arrest can cost someone more than $13,000 if it’s their first offense.

“If you are putting yourself behind the wheel or you make a decision of putting yourself behind the wheel in the middle of a consumption, then it is a horrible, irresponsible, and dangerous decision, and if you do it, we will be looking for you,” Sgt. Alvarado said.

  • Colorado snowplow driver on administrative leave after fatal I-70 crash

    [ad_1]

The snowplow driver who lost control last week on Interstate 70 and swerved into oncoming traffic has been placed on administrative leave amid the fatal crash investigation, state officials said.

State patrol officials hope to complete the crash investigation within four weeks, but “many factors play into that timeframe,” Colorado State Patrol spokesperson Ivan Alvarado said Monday.

The driver of a van carrying a youth hockey team headed to Denver for the Western Girls Hockey League weekend died in the Thursday morning crash on I-70 near Herman Gulch, and eight people in the van were injured, according to state patrol officials.

The Clear Creek County Coroner’s Office identified the driver killed in the crash as 38-year-old Manuel Alejandro Lorenzana Villegas from Chatsworth, California. His cause of death remained under investigation on Monday, Chief Deputy Coroner Nichol Nelson said.

Lorenzana Villegas was the father of one of the players on the youth hockey team, the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers, according to reporting from Denver7.

A snowplow on westbound I-70 lost control in the snow shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday, crashing through the median and hitting a Toyota Tacoma in the eastbound lanes, state patrol officials said. The impact sent the Tacoma back across the median, where it hit a westbound BMW.

State investigators said the snow plow then hit the Ford Transit van carrying the girls’ hockey team from California, sending the van down an embankment. The agency previously identified the vehicle as a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van.

Three adults and four juveniles in the van were taken to Denver Health by ambulance, hospital officials said in a statement.

A fifth juvenile passenger was airlifted to a separate trauma center with critical injuries, according to the state patrol. No other injuries were reported.

  • Colorado traffic deaths increased in 2025, reversing decline

    [ad_1]

Traffic deaths in Colorado increased in 2025, reversing a decline in recent years, with about one in three deaths related to impaired driving, according to state data released Thursday.

Colorado Department of Transportation officials said that, while the increase is small, they see troubling trends and plan to refocus safety efforts around impaired driving and deaths involving pedestrians and bicyclists.

A total of 701 people died on Colorado roads in 2025, an increase of 1.7% over the 689 fatalities reported in 2024, the data show. The number is still below the a record-setting 764 fatalities in 2022.

  • Semitruck driver dies in late-Wednesday night multi-vehicle crash near Oklahoma border: Colorado State Patrol

    [ad_1]

BACA COUNTY, Colo. — A semitruck driver died in a late-Wednesday night multi-vehicle crash on Highway 287, Colorado State Patrol (CSP) said.

Around 11:39 p.m. Wednesday, CSP was called to a crash involving three semis in the southeast corner of the state, just north of the Oklahoma state line.

A 48-year-old man out of Florida was driving a Volvo semitruck hauling a trailer. He was headed southbound on Highway 287, behind a Peterbilt semi also hauling a trailer. In the opposite lane headed northbound on Highway 287, CSP said a 54-year-old man out of Texas was driving a second Peterbilt semi hauling a trailer.

The driver of the first Peterbilt semi crossed over the center line of the road, hitting the 54-year-old Texas driver head on. The first Peterbilt semi truck was then engulfed in flames.

The 54-year-old Texas man drove off the right side of the road before bringing the semi to a stop. The 48-year-old Florida driver also drove off the right side of the road to avoid the crash, hitting a barbed wire fence before coming to a stop.

The first Peterbilt semi truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) dispatch at 719-544-2525 and reference case number VC260027. CSP will ask tipsters for their name and contact information so investigations can reach them.

  • Fuel leak, semitrailer crash shuts down I-70 on Colorado plains

    [ad_1]

One person was injured Wednesday afternoon when a semitrailer crashed on Interstate 70 east of Denver, spilling fuel across the highway, according to the state patrol.

Colorado State Patrol troopers responded to the semitrailer crash on westbound I-70 at milemarker 324, near Deer Trail in Arapahoe County, at about 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the agency.

The highway was temporarily closed in both directions between exit 328 and U.S. 40 so a medical helicopter could land, and paramedics took the driver to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries, state patrol said.

Investigators believe the semitrailer driver struck a water barrel in a construction zone on the highway and lost control. The semitrailer then struck multiple concrete barriers and veered to the side of the roadway, where it hit a guardrail, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The driver was cited for careless driving and failure to present immediate evidence of insurance, state patrol officials said.

That’s when the driver of the Toyota hit a Ford Fusion sedan.

    [ad_1]

ARVADA, Colo. — A semitruck crash on westbound Interstate 76 Monday morning ruptured its saddle tank, leaking 100 gallons of diesel onto the highway, according to Colorado State Patrol (CSP).

This was a multi-car crash, involving two other vehicles in addition to the semitruck, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The people involved sustained minor injuries.

I-76 westbound is closed at Federal Boulevard due to safety concerns, between Sheridan Boulevard and Interstate 70, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. CDOT is trying to divert traffic onto Sheridan Boulevard, CSP said.

Denver7 Traffic Expert Jayson Luber recommended morning commuters not get on westbound I-76 west of Interstate 25, as it appears all lanes of westbound I-76 are blocked west of Sheridan. Even first responders are stuck in the traffic jam, Luber observed.

  • Runaway semi crashes over edge of Colorado mountain pass, killing New York driver

    [ad_1]

A New York man driving a semitrailer in southern Colorado died Monday after crashing over the edge of a mountain pass, according to the state patrol.

A man was killed Nov. 3, 2025, after the semitruck he was driving on U.S. 160 over Wolf Creek Pass near Pagosa Springs went over the side, throwing him from the cab. (Courtesy of Colorado State Patrol)

The man, 23, was driving south on a section of U.S. 160 near Pagosa Springs known as Wolf Creek Pass when he hit the barrier wall on the right side of the highway and bounced off, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol.

He then swerved through the guardrail on the highway’s left side, rolling the semitrailer down the mountain, investigators said in the release.

Both the trailer and the cab were destroyed in the crash, which happened at about 8:20 a.m. Monday, according to the agency.

The man was driving at an “excessive speed” with smoke coming from the brakes before the crash, state patrol officials said. He failed to take the runaway truck ramp about 1 1/2 miles before the crash site.

Investigators could not immediately find the driver amid the “large debris scene” that spread from the highway down the mountain because his body was ejected from the vehicle in the crash, state patrol officials said. The man, who has not been publicly identified, was later found dead.

The semitrailer split open during the initial crash on the highway, spilling its cargo of canned drinks across the pass before rolling down the mountain, according to investigators.

  • Arvada police make arrests in armed robbery and carjacking on Saturday

    [ad_1]

ARVADA, Colo. — The Arvada Police Department announced arrests in an armed robbery and carjacking on Saturday night.

Leonardo Roman-Martinez, 26, is facing second-degree attempted murder, aggravated robbery, second-degree motor vehicle theft and vehicular eluding.

Jesus Calva, 39, also faces second-degree attempted murder and aggravated robbery. Separately, he faces possession of Methamphetamine — a controlled substance.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was initially called to the area of W. 54th Ave. and Harlan Street on report of an armed robbery and carjacking. When they arrived, deputies found someone who had been shot multiple times and told law enforcement two people stole his green Chevrolet Silverado.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies used Flock safety cameras to locate his vehicle near W. 58th Ave. and Pierce Street. They tried to block the vehicle, but the carjacking suspects got away from law enforcement.

The two suspects drove onto westbound Interstate 76 but deputies, along with Arvada police officers, pursued them onto westbound Interstate 70.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were able to stop the stolen vehicle. While the suspects tried to run again, deputies took the two into custody. One person was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries.

The crime scene was in Arvada police jurisdiction, so the department took over the investigation.
