• Cage the Elephant Brings Frenetic Energy to 713 Music Hall – Houston Press

    Cage the Elephant

Cage the Elephant treated fans at 713 Music Hall to one of the most energetic shows in music today.

Cage the Elephant frontman Matt Shultz might be the most energetic guy in rock today. Imagine a Labrador Retriever puppy with a Red Bull IV drip, and that’s about what you get when Shultz and crew take the stage.

This is a compliment; the dude is awesome, as was Cage the Elephant on Monday night before a sold-out crowd at 713 Music Hall. Decked out in sunglasses and with the cool to match, Shultz and crew emerged at 9 p.m. to fire and a roar from the crowd.

The next 90 minutes? Well, they never let up.

Shultz and his bandmates whipped through a tighter-than-hell 21-song set that ably mixed tracks from their newest release – last year’s Neon Pill – with a number of fan favorites from a catalog that’s far more extensive than some might recall.

Whether it was “Mess Around,” “Trouble” and “Cold Cold Cold” – from 2015’s stellar Tell Me I’m Pretty, to “Come a Little Closer” and “Cigarette Daydreams” from its predecessor (Melophobia), Cage matched the crowd’s frenetic energy throughout the duration of its set.

Fire shot from the stage, Shultz bopped around the most cocksure of confidence and fans in attendance were treated to one of the great – and, quite frankly, underrated – bands of its era. By the time the band wrapped up with “Come a Little Closer,” it had left no doubt.

A Cage the Elephant show is more than just a show; it’s an experience.

So, How Was the Crowd?: Far more diverse, in terms of age, than one might expect. Quite a few folks well into their 60s, a number of young folks in their early 20s. And a number of parents with their kids. Oh, and it was packed.

Random Notebook Dump:713 is a phenomenal live music venue, both in terms of acoustics and aesthetic … Props to the bands for wrapping things up by 10:30 p.m.; it was a school night!

There was a lot going on in the music business in the autumn of 1975. Bruce Springsteen was on tour promoting his breakthrough album Born to Run, meanwhile appearing on the covers of both Newsweek and Time in the same week. The Who released the raggedy but still appealing record The Who by Numbers. Bob Dylan kicked off his “Rolling Thunder Review” tour. And the Sex Pistols played their first show, at St. Martin’s School of Art in London.

But in the midst of all this, Pink Floyd released Wish You Were Here, the band’s follow up to the mega-platinum The Dark Side of the Moon. Sales figures aside, Wish You Were Here is the superior album. Both are tremendous, but Wish You Were Here is an album that appeals to so many.

Who cannot identify with the album’s themes of absence and loss that the lyrics and music portray? Who does not think of people now missing from life who once occupied such a significant position? Wish You Were Here contains Pink Floyd’s most universal message, so I encourage you to give it a spin this week, maybe also raising a glass to someone whose journey is now over, but whose trip you were part of for a while. Haven’t we all known a crazy diamond?

    Ticket Alert

Look at you, Colter Wall! Two nights (Wednesday, January 21, and Thursday, January 22) at the Bayou Music Center! His forthcoming album, Memories and Empties, will be released in November, which means that fans will be fully familiar with the new material by the time the Canadian singer-songwriter arrives in Houston.

Kelly Willis has been a fixture on the Texas music scene for many years, and she is currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of her landmark album What I Deserve. The album was begun with recording sessions in San Francisco, but after a parting with her record company, Willis brought the tapes to Austin and finished the record there, resulting in an album that still resonates today. Catch Willis on Thursday, February 14, at the Mucky Duck.

When Opeth comes to town, get ready for some heavy-duty prog metal, with notes (as wine connoisseurs would say) of blues, classical and jazz. The band will play the Bayou Music Center on Sunday, February 15, but I don’t know that it’s really a Valentine’s Day-weekend-appropriate show. Unless your significant other is totally into this stuff, in which case, let ‘er rip!

So what to say about Raye? In the singer-songwriter / record producer’s catalog, the listener will find influences ranging from R&B to jazz to soul and pop. That’s a lot going on. Fortunately, Raye manages to corral these musical styles into a coherent, consistently grooving sound. She will perform on Friday, May 1, at the 713 Music Hall.

Blues guitarist Davey Knowles grew up on the Isle of Man, which is about 30 miles from Ireland. Which explains the presence of a Celtic vibe and a major Rory Gallagher influence in his playing. Check him out on Thursday at the Big Top, right next door to the Continental Club.

And speaking of talented blues-based guitarists, Tab Benoit will perform on Friday at the Heights Theater. ‘Cause Knowledge is Power: Benoit founded Voice of the Wetlands (VOW), a conservation organization that promotes the preservation of the Louisiana wetlands and the accompanying culture.

If you have ever said to yourself, “Man, if only there were a rock and roll band fronted by three bagpipe players,” then you are in luck, as the Red Hot Chilli Pipers will bring their unique act to the Dosey Doe Big Barn on Saturday. The band performs a mix of traditional Scottish music and classic rock covers such as “Smoke on the Water,” “We Will Rock You” and “Don’t Stop Believing.” This is one of those “dinner and a show” affairs that the Dosey Doe is known for, but no word yet on whether haggis will be on the menu.

Jon Batiste can do it all. Well, if not “all,” then most of it. Batiste gained celebrity as the bandleader on Stephen Colbert’s late-night show, later winning an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Grammy for his score for the Pixar film Soul. He has also composed a symphony and found time to do some acting last year, appearing as Billy Preston in the film Saturday Night. Oh, and he composed the score for that movie too. Batiste’s “Big Money” tour makes a stop at the Smart Financial Centre on Saturday.

Like many young artists, Junior H first entered the public consciousness via videos that he posted on YouTube. His songs helped to establish the corridos tumbados (aka trap corridos) genre, which combines influences from narcocorridos and rap music. Considering that Junior H has sold tens of millions of records in a period of just a few years, it’s no wonder that he can play two nights, this Saturday and Sunday, at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

Cage the Elephant began its existence in Bowling Green, KY and then moved across the pond to London, where the band began to consolidate its sound. ‘Cause Knowledge is Power: The band’s name resulted from an encounter with a man (probably mentally ill) who repeatedly told lead singer Matt Shultz, “You got to cage the elephant!” I suppose we can consider the elephant caged, as the band will perform on Monday at the 713 Music Hall.

  • Cage the Elephant, Young the Giant Deliver Show Of the Summer at Woodlands Pavilion

Cage the Elephant, Young the Giant Deliver Show Of the Summer at Woodlands Pavilion

    [ad_1]

A devastating week for Houston, and surrounding areas, in Hurricane Beryl’s wake, left some Cage the Elephant fans uncertain about the status of the Neon Pill Tour’s stop in The Woodlands. But Friday approached without cancelation. No postponement flyer graced the instagram stories of the featured bands or venue, and no power outages were reported in the venue’s immediate area. It was a go. Thousands of concertgoers walked across the bridge to The Pavilion, picnic blankets and lawn chairs in tow.

The band’s namesake, the deranged ramblings of a concertgoer in 2006, “you have to cage the elephant!” to be precise, suggest that their early shows were likely as dynamic as they are now. But their early style: a little blues, grunge, some post punk—sonically uncombed and slightly underproduced—seems to have given way to something more polished in their 2024 record Neon Pill. But this tour isn’t really about the album, despite being named after it. In fact their Houston setlist included only three songs from the new offering. The rest of the show was packed with hits from their six other records.

It was still light out when Young the Giant, the tour’s main opener, took to the stage. Under The Pavilion’s canopy it remained a balmy 80 degrees Fahrenheit as the evening light faded and the fog machines spilled their haze out into the tiered amphitheater. Atmospherically, and with an opening band of Young the Giant’s caliber, it felt less like a concert and more like a music festival. It was a good place to be.

Lead vocalist Sameer Gadhia stepped on to a dark stage in a simple sleeveless white shirt and white linen trousers, dimly lit by a matrix of purple stage lights. Payam Doostzadeh (bass) followed shortly after from stage right, followed then by Jacob Tilley (guitar), Eric Cannata (guitar), and François Comtois (percussion). Gadhia looked out to the packed venue (even the hill was brimming with families and couples on picnic blankets) and began singing “Jungle Youth” from their immensely popular 2016 record Home of the Strange.

<a target="_blank" href="https://media2.houstonpress.com/hou/imager/u/original/18518263/2024-07-12_-_ytg-5423.jpg" rel="contentImg_gal-18518010 noopener" title="Sameer Gadhia, frontman of Young the Giant, sings "The Walk Home" at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Presented by Huntsman. - Photo by Jennifer Lake" data-caption="Sameer Gadhia, frontman of Young the Giant, sings "The Walk Home" at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Presented by Huntsman. Photo by Jennifer Lake" class="uk-display-block uk-position-relative uk-visible-toggle"> click to enlarge

Sameer Gadhia, frontman of Young the Giant, sings “The Walk Home” at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Presented by Huntsman.

“The Walk Home”, a song from their latest album American Bollywood, released in 2022, gave fans what would be their only taste of newer YTG repertoire for the night. The record was inspired by the ancient Sanskrit Hindu text of The Mahabharata and offers quite a more atmospheric, thoughtful style of songwriting though, perhaps, with less commercial notability that some of their earlier work.

“Cough Syrup”, the band’s third song of the night, seemed a standout moment for fans. The crowd jumped up and down and sang back the lyrics at the top of their lungs. Hardly the wonted experience of a concert’s supporting act. But this was no usual opening set. Though Gadhia and his band of mystic rock stars had no dedicated stage setting—they performed in front of the headliner’s stage set, as an opening act usually does—they made the Neon Pill Tour feel like it was co-headlined, simply by delivering the kind of arresting musical spectacle we should now know to expect when Young the Giant is on the bill.

After “Cough Syrup” Gadhia explained that the band didn’t plan on going on tour again this summer. They instead were going to work on their next album, and rest from their 2023 tour. But when their old friends Cage The Elephant called, the “Mind Over Matter” singer and his band couldn’t resist. “This next song we haven’t played in six years!” Gadhia declared, “we’re going to try it.” The song he was referring to was another gem from Home of the Strange, “Elsewhere” which had rarely been performed live.

Young the Giant flew through a range of hits, new and old, including “Heat of Summer”, “Call Me Back”, and “Apartment.” But the audience really got into it when the group played the uplifting intro to “Superposition”, a mellow, psychedelic pop anthem from the 2018 album Mirror Master. “I want you” the crowd, now all on their feet, sang back to the stage, “to want me! Why don’t we rely on chemistry?” As the sun finally set, one of the girls in a group next to me yelled “This is my favorite song!”

<a target="_blank" href="https://media2.houstonpress.com/hou/imager/u/original/18518261/2024-07-12_-_ytg-5065.jpg" rel="contentImg_gal-18518010 noopener" title="Billed as the supporting act, Young the Giant's set left the audience feeling more like they were a second headliner. - Photo by Jennifer Lake" data-caption="Billed as the supporting act, Young the Giant's set left the audience feeling more like they were a second headliner. Photo by Jennifer Lake" class="uk-display-block uk-position-relative uk-visible-toggle"> click to enlarge

Billed as the supporting act, Young the Giant’s set left the audience feeling more like they were a second headliner.

A noticeable lack of cell phone recording was taking place during Young the Giant’s remarkable performance. It could have been a coincidence but I’d like to think that their concert might just have been that engaging. Finishing with smash hits “Mind Over Matter”, “Silvertongue”, and “My Body” the band retired for the night.

Set design for Cage The Elephant’s performance was really just extensive and strategically placed lighting. Behind the main platform, which housed the trap set, a Rhodes, and other keyboards, was a curved flight of vintage-style amber lamps that backlit the whole scene. In addition to these stylized lamps was an elaborate grid of modern stage lighting, as well as floor-to-ceiling strips of LEDs. Soon after Cage The Elephant entered the stage and picked up their instruments, frontman Matt Shultz sang the opening line of “Broken Boy” on a dimly lit stage.

But when the singer began the first chorus, it became clear that there was a lot more to the stage than lighting. Pyrotechnic jets flared from the base of the stage and Shultz leapt in the air clearing the entire mic stand, turning the crowd wild. A network of lasers aimed from the stage ceiling added to the intricacy of the tour’s lighting design. Interestingly, the main video feed, broadcasting to two enormous screens on either side of the stage, was in black and white, lending ‘home video’ air to what was essentially a stadium-sized concert.

<a target="_blank" href="https://media2.houstonpress.com/hou/imager/u/original/18518242/2024-07-12_-_cage-6025.jpg" rel="contentImg_gal-18518010 noopener" title="There was no shortage of pyrotechnics during Cage the Elephant's performance at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Presented by Huntsman. - Photo by Jennifer Lake" data-caption="There was no shortage of pyrotechnics during Cage the Elephant's performance at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Presented by Huntsman. Photo by Jennifer Lake" class="uk-display-block uk-position-relative uk-visible-toggle"> click to enlarge

There was no shortage of pyrotechnics during Cage the Elephant’s performance at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Presented by Huntsman.

Matt Shultz was entirely silhouetted by the backlights: a human eclipse in an L.A. Dodgers cap and hipster sweater vest, as he began singing “Spiderhead”, a crowd favorite from the band’s 2013 album Melophobia, meaning “fear of music.”

“We know it’s been a tough time for a lot of people,” Shultz empathized with Houstonians following Hurricane Beryl’s lasting adverse consequences, “we’re honored and blessed to be here.” The group played through a few songs from different eras: “Too Late To Say Goodbye” (Tell Me I’m Pretty, 2015), “Good Time” (Neon Pill, 2024), and “Ready to Let Go” (Social Cues, 2019), before performing the title track of their new record, “Neon Pill”, which some fans already knew all the lyrics to.

“Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked” was met with extraordinary enthusiasm from a zealous and well lubricated crowd, as was expected. But the song that left the biggest impression on me was “Telescope” which saw an entire 15,000 person pavilion waving their lit phones back and forth to the music. “Let’s see the lights!” Shultz urged.

As the band began their last few songs, beginning with their hit “Shake Me Down” Shultz admitted to the audience that his in-ear monitor had not been working for most of the show but had finally turned back on, shocking many concertgoers. Remarkably, he, and the rest of the band, had sounded just like their studio recordings throughout the evening; an impressive feat without a working monitor.

<a target="_blank" href="https://media1.houstonpress.com/hou/imager/u/original/18518252/2024-07-12_-_cage-7082.jpg" rel="contentImg_gal-18518010 noopener" title="Cage the Elephant members Nick Bockrath (left), Matt Shultz (center), and Brad Shultz (right). - Photo by Jennifer Lake" data-caption="Cage the Elephant members Nick Bockrath (left), Matt Shultz (center), and Brad Shultz (right). Photo by Jennifer Lake" class="uk-display-block uk-position-relative uk-visible-toggle"> click to enlarge

Cage the Elephant members Nick Bockrath (left), Matt Shultz (center), and Brad Shultz (right).

“Cigarette Daydreams” and, unsurprisingly, “Come a Little Closer” closed out the show. There were no real surprises. In fact, Cage’s setlist was publicly available long before the concert and there were no changes made, no surprise guests, no epiphanic speeches, or song switches. But with a band like Cage the Elephant, do you really need surprises? From opening acts like Bakar and Young the Giant, to a show-stopping, pyrotechnic infused finale, the Neon Pill Tour was the show of the summer. The tour is slated to continue through the U.S. through September before its final stop in Mexico City.

SETLISTS

Young the Giant:

1. I would love to see my entire Spotify Wrapped lineup live. And I’ve spent thousands of dollars on Harry Styles alone — judge me if you want, I don’t plan on stopping. But my wallet isn’t as enthusiastic.

That’s where the beloved music festival comes in. It’s the best opportunity to see a bunch of artists in the span of a few days. You either love them or you’re not built for them…and I fall somewhere in between.

A music festival is the equivalent of an appetizer sampler; you get to see some artists you normally wouldn’t spend money on, and you also get some of your classic favorite artists all on the same lineup. For example, I went to Firefly Music Festival to see Billie Eilish…and left loving The Killers.

Now that the weather is getting warmer and we are increasingly more open to the idea of leaving our homes, festival season is quickly approaching. Coachella, one of the world’s most famous (and potentially overrated) festivals, occurs every year in April and kicks off a slew of fun music festivals to attend.

The only issue is: how do you choose the best music festival for you? With over 50 festivals listed already this Spring and Summer 2024, it can be hard to choose. I like to check out the lineups and see which festivals have the most new artists for me to discover. Then, I take a look at where they’re happening and make my decision from there.

I’ve rounded up a few festivals happening in the US in 2024 that are both newsworthy and will get you to see the most relevant artists in the industry. Enjoy the food, the shopping, the arts, and the acts!

M3F Fest

Where? Phoenix, Arizona

When? March 1-2, 2024

Who? Dominic Fike, Duke Dumont, Hippo Campus, Gorgon City, SG Lewis, Dayglow, DRAMA, and more.

What? A music festival thrown by non-profit, The M3F Fund, where 100% of proceeds go to charities like Habitat for Humanity, Phoenix Rescue Mission, Arizona Helping Hands, and more.
