    Prep roundup: Serra dominates in win over St. Ignatius, Benicia softball wins eighth straight game

    No. 3 Serra 5, No. 11 St. Ignatius 1

    The Padres bounced back after dropping the first of a two-game series against the Wildcats on Friday. 

    St. Ignatius took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Patrick Ruane scored Makai Susor on a sacrifice bunt. 

    Serra responded in a big way in the fourth inning. 

    The San Mateo school scored four consecutive runs as St. Ignatius struggled to get outs. After Evan Bradshaw knocked in Ian Josephson to tie the game, the Wildcats walked three straight batters with the bases loaded and Serra took a 4-1 lead heading into the fifth. 

    Ian Armstrong’s RBI single in the seventh gave Serra a commanding 5-1 lead to seal the win for the Padres. 

    Serra, which improved to 18-5, 9-3, snapped its two-game losing streak. St. Ignatius dropped to 15-7, 6-6.

    No. 4 Valley Christian 11, Bellarmine 0 

    The Warriors blanked Bellarmine behind a superb pitching performance from Rohan Kasanagottu.

    Kasanagottu pitched 6 1/3 innings, striking out seven and allowing four hits. 

    Stanford commit Quinten Marsh went 3 for 3 with five RBIs and a homerun. Hunter Fujimoto totaled two hits and a home run. 

    Valley Christian moved to 22-3, 10-2. Bellarmine is now 11-13, 4-8.

    No. 13 Archbishop Mitty 5, No. 8 Sacred Heart Cathedral 3

    Mitty overcame a two-run deficit to beat Sacred Heart Cathedral at home. 

    The Fightin’ Irish took a two-run advantage in the top of the third when Jack Ruegg scored Barclay Ovalle on a sacrifice fly to left field. Mitty tied the game in the bottom half of the inning after Andrew Sauceda’s RBI single scored Mason Manglicmot and Nico Rodriguez. 

    The Monarchs blew the game open in the fourth, scoring three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Sacred Heart scored a run in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough as Mitty closed out the game strong in the seventh by retiring three of four batters. 

    The Monarchs won both games of the series and improved to 15-9-1, 7-4-1. Sacred Heart dropped to 15-9, 6-6. 

    Elk Grove 3, No. 5 De La Salle 2

    The Spartans’ high-powered offense went cold in Saturday’s loss to Elk Grove as De La Salle managed just five hits. 

    The Concord school dropped its third game this year to a Sac-Joaquin Section team.

    De La Salle senior Hank Tripaldi was 2 for 3 and had an RBI. 

    The Spartans are now 14-5. 

    No. 9 James Logan 6, No. 18 Berkeley 2

    James Logan extended its winning streak to eight, beating Berkeley at home.

    The Yellow Jackets briefly led after scoring a run in the first, but it was all James Logan after that. 

    The Colts scored two runs in the second inning, three runs in the third and a run in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead late. 

    James Logan’s Kayden Carmona-Shaw had a hit and two RBIs. Junior Evan Yau was 2 for 3 and recorded an RBI. 

    Sophomore Westley Vega came in relief in the sixth and struck out five while allowing a run for the Colts. 

    James Logan improved to 17-3. Berkeley dropped to 11-9.

    Baseball

    No. 4 Valley Christian 5, No. 12 Archbishop Mitty 3

    The Warriors overcame a three-run deficit in the first inning and rallied to beat Mitty for their seventh league win of the year. 

    An RBI single from Luka Pintar brought home Andrew Sauceda and Makoa Sniffen in the first inning. Waylon Walsh reached home on a fielding error, putting Mitty up 3-0 early. 

    But Valley Christian’s offense came alive in the fourth. 

    Tatum Marsh hit a solo homer on the first pitch thrown to him to cut the Mitty lead to two runs. Valley Christian tied the game 3-3 when Kole Laubach hit an RBI double to the center field wall that scored Jordan Ortiz and Brock Ketelsen.

    Marsh scored the go-ahead run in the fifth after he singled to knock in Nathan Choi. Later in the inning, Ketelsen was walked with the bases loaded which brought home Marsh, giving the Warriors a 5-3 advantage. 

    Laubach, who came in relief in the second inning, retired three straight batters in the seventh to close the game. He ended the day allowing just two hits and striking out six. 

    Valley Christian won both games of the two-game series and moved to 19-3, 7-2. Mitty is now 13-8-1, 5-3-1.

    No. 2 Granada 10, Foothill 3

    Granada put up six runs before the fifth inning and had 15 hits as the Matadors completed the sweep of Foothill with a 10-3 win. 

    Junior Mikey Boyd had two hits, two RBIs and a home run. Riley Winchell was 3 for 4 and had an RBI. 

    Pitcher Parker Warner pitched 4 2/3 innings, striking out five and allowing a run. 

    Sophomore George Schmitt hit a home run for Foothill, which is now 10-10, 4-5. 

    Granada improved to 19-1, 8-1.

    No. 5 De La Salle 12, No. 7 San Ramon Valley 

    The Spartans won their sixth straight game behind an explosive offensive performance from Hank Tripaldi. 

    The senior was 2 for 3 with five RBIs, a double and a home run. Tripaldi had the Spartans’ only two extra-base hits.

    De La Salle shortstop Tyler Spangler totaled two hits and two RBIs. 

    SRV’s Colin Linteo had a home run. 

    De La Salle improved to 12-3, 6-2. SRV dropped to 12-7, 7-3.

    Castro Valley 6, No. 17 Piedmont 4 (nine innings)

    Castro Valley came back from a two-run deficit to beat Piedmont in extra innings.

    Piedmont took a 2-0 lead after two innings, but Castro Valley put up a three-spot in the third to take a 3-2 lead. 

    The Trojans led 4-3 heading into the sixth, but Piedmont tied it when Diego Delventhal singled to right field and brought home Brandon Dicke. 

    After the two teams went scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings, the Trojans broke through in the ninth. 

    Gilbert Seidel was walked with the bases loaded, bringing home Braden Spade. In the next at-bat, Owen Seidel reached home on a ground out to put the Trojans up 6-4. 

    In the bottom of the ninth pitcher Alex Nicol retired three straight to ice the win for Castro Valley, which improved to 12-7-1, 2-3-1. Nicol came in relief in the sixth and ended the day, allowing just a hit while striking out five.

    Piedmont dropped to 13-3, 5-1. 

    Oakland Tech 2, Skyline 0

    The Bulldogs remained perfect in Oakland Athletic League play with a dominant defensive win over Skyline. 

    Senior David Granger pitched a complete game shutout, striking out nine and allowing just two hits. 

    Junior Ben Estow had an RBI double. 

    Oakland Tech jumped to 11-6, 7-0. Skyline is now 4-6, 3-3. 

    Softball

    No. 1 St. Francis 17, Sacred Heart Cathedral 0 (five innings)

    The Lancers won their 17th straight by scoring 17 runs, defeating SHC by mercy rule. 

    St. Francis put up 11 runs in the first inning and didn’t look back. 

    Shannon Keighran batted 2 for 3 with four RBIs and a triple. Rebecca Quinn had two hits and three RBIs.

    Kate Munnerlyn had another solid day in the pitcher’s circle, throwing a one-hitter in five innings while striking out five. Keighran came in relief in the fourth inning and struck out three while allowing no hits.

    Heritage stays in control of first place in BVAL with comeback win over Pittsburg

    PITTSBURG — Heritage didn’t play its best game. 

    But when it mattered most, the Patriots found a way to get the job done. 

    After struggling to score runs for five innings, Heritage came alive late to beat Pittsburg 4-3 on Thursday and firmly secure its spot as the top team in the Bay Valley Athletic League standings. 

    Heritage junior Alonzo Alvarez was 3 for 4 and had two doubles. Elijah Ward totaled two hits and scored a run while KC Karbowski had a hit and an RBI. 

    Patriots pitcher JJ Kinnaird pitched 5 1/3 innings, striking out three while allowing two runs. 

    “All week we were preparing to play the best team in our area,” Ward said. “We knew we had to come out and score early and play dominant defense. That’s what we did.”

    Pittsburg came into Thursday’s game motivated to even the score against its division rival as the Pirates dropped the first of the two-game series 6-2 at Heritage on Tuesday.

    Due for a get-back game, Pittsburg looked dominant early on. 

    In the top half of the fourth inning, pitcher Josh Painter got caught in a jam with Heritage runners occupying second and third base and no outs. The senior retired the next batter and helped force a double play later in the inning to retire the side.

    In the bottom half of the fourth, Pittsburg’s offense broke through. 

    Niko Fuentes’ single to center field scored Cole Leschak and Anthony Garcia to put the Pirates up 2-0. 

    A half inning later, Painter retired three of four batters as it looked like the Pirates were in complete control of the game heading into the sixth. 

    Painter finished the day by striking out seven batters in five innings. 

    The Heritage crowd sat quietly through the first five innings, but that all changed in the sixth. 

    With his pitch count at 78, Pittsburg coach Marco Cartagena subbed out Painter as he is still working his way back from an injury sustained earlier in the season.

    As the Pirates relieved their most effective pitcher, the Patriots took advantage. 

    The first three Heritage runners singled, loading the bases for KC Karbowski with no outs. The senior singled to drive in Gio Martini and give the Patriots their first run of the game. Jace Bernard tied the game 2-2 after he was walked in the next at-bat.

    Sophomore Jett Guevara batted in the go-ahead runs when he doubled on a laser to the center field wall, putting the Patriots up 4-2. 

    “They just got hot and got a couple of hits in a row,” Cartagena said about losing the lead in the sixth inning. “We were lucky it was only four runs.”

    Valley Christian 6, Sacred Heart Cathedral 2

    Hunter Fujimoto’s line drive into center wasn’t just a double that cleared the bases on Friday afternoon. 

    It was Valley Christian’s only hit of the day. 

    One hit was enough for the Bay Area News Group’s No. 1 team, which avenged its loss at Sacred Heart Cathedral earlier in the week with the team’s 10th victory in 11 games this season.

    Brock Ketelsen got plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded to get Valley Christian’s first run across in the fourth inning, and then Nathan Choi endured a similar fate to drive in a second run. 

    Luke Osuna-Summers took four consecutive out-of-the-zone pitches to walk in Valley’s third run, and then Fujimoto made it 6-1 with his double.

    Valley Christian drew seven walks and was hit by three pitches in its West Catholic Athletic League victory.

    Longtime Valley Christian coach John Diatte said that, while remarkable, this victory is not unprecedented. 

    “We have thrown a no-hitter and lost, and been no-hit and won,” Diatte told the Bay Area News Group via text. “Baseball is a crazy game.”

    Joey Valencia put SHC up 1-0 in the second inning, but the Fightin’ Irish got very little offense after that, one Aaron Louis home run notwithstanding. 

    Valley Christian pitcher Rohan Kasanagotu was a big reason why, pitching a complete game, striking out seven and walking none. 

    Sacred Heart Cathedral fell to 7-5, 1-3.

    No. 8 Serra 12, Archbishop Riordan 0

    Serra senior Ian Armstrong had a day to remember at the plate in the Padres’ rout of Archbishop Riordan. He hit two home runs and drove in five as Serra improved to 9-1.

    Ian Josephson had two RBIs, and Jake Downing scored three runs for the San Mateo program. Sam Kretsch pitched five innings and allowed just two hits while striking out six. 

    No. 6 Bellarmine 2, No. 9 Archbishop Mitty 1

    Sawyer Stout’s seventh-inning double gave Bellarmine a dramatic walk-off victory over its San Jose rival.

    Mitty took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Makoa Sniffen doubled into right field. Bellarmine’s Nolan Randol answered in the bottom of the frame with a double to left. 

    Arkansas commit Wade Mountz pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out four and not allowing a hit for the Bells. On the other side, Mitty’s Lukas Pintar struck out six in five innings. 

    Bellarmine improved to 7-1, 3-1 and Mitty dropped to 6-5-1, 1-2-1. 

    No. 15 Amador Valley 1, Monte Vista 0

    Amador Valley pitchers Jason Alonso and Brennan Baptist won a pitching duel with Monte Vista’s Rohan French in a hard-fought East Bay Athletic League matchup. 

    Alonso and French combined to allow two hits and just three walks, while French gave up two hits and struck out five in a complete game. 

    Kyle Barbera scored the only run of the game when he reached home safely after a Monte Vista error on a ground ball. Amador Valley improved to 6-4, 2-2.

    Monte Vista fell to 4-5, 1-3. 

    Foothill 20, Dougherty Valley 4

    Foothill had as many hits as it did runs in a run-rule victory over EBAL opponent Dougherty Valley. Senior Nate Novitske hit a home run and had six RBIs for the Falcons, who also got home runs from Austin Harris and Tanner Tarpley. Foothill improved to 7-4, 3-1.

    Dougherty Valley dropped to 3-8, 1-3. 

    Irvington 5, American 2

    Brayden Jaksa was 3 for 3 with one walk and one RBI as the Vikings made it three wins in their last four games. Shortstop Ryan Johnson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Benjamin Walkup also had an RBI. Eric Keesis and Carson Rice each had two hits for American. 

    Silver Creek 4, Del Mar 3

    Giovanni Mejia and Michael Fonseca each drove in one run as Silver Creek slipped past Del Mar. Keith Truong and Iverson Alvernaz also had two hits apiece for the Raiders. Del Mar’s Kyle McClements went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Silver Creek improved to 5-6 and Del Mar dropped to 2-5. 

    Softball

    Los Gatos 2, Mountain View 1

    Los Gatos rallied from an early deficit by pushing a run across the plate in the fourth and fifth innings to come through with the victory. 

    Mili Patel placed a single into right field to drive in Elia Grisanti and put Mountain View up 1-0 in the top of the third.

    Tessa Lilienstein took advantage of a dropped third strike and scored to tie the game for Los Gatos in the bottom of the fourth inning, and then Annika Norquist crushed a double into right to take the lead in the fifth. 

    Norquist, just a freshman, was exceptional in the circle. She pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits with zero walks. Los Gatos improved to 7-2 while Mountain View dropped to 4-5. 

    Leigh 4, Westmont 1

    Elliana Snyder was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and one double as Leigh took care of business against Westmont. Junior Sophia Gandara also had an RBI for the Longhorns improved to 5-4, and Camryn Manning-Alarcon swiped two of Leigh’s seven stolen bases. Gandara struck out 12 in a complete game as Westmont fell to 1-10. 

    Mt. Eden 15, Tennyson 0

    Jasmine Cruz was 3 for 3 with four runs scored and two RBIs as Mt. Eden run-ruled Tennyson. Teammate Andrea Toledo was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Kealani Temoche, Daniella Montes and Shelby Anne Newcomb all had two hits. Toledo struck out 10 and allowed just two hits.

    Boys: Top storylines

    Archbishop Mitty is playing its best soccer at the right time. After winning the Central Coast Section Division I title against St. Francis, Mitty was awarded the No. 2 seed and will play No. 7 McClatchy from Sacramento. The Monarchs are 10-0-3 in their last 13 matches and have not lost since Jan. 11. Mitty lost to Jesuit High School — this year’s No. 1 seed in Division I — last year in the Division II Norcals. If seeds hold, the two could see each other in this year’s Division I championship match. The trio Jaxson Bettencourt, Guiseppe Sigala and Isaac Castillo will look to lead the Monarchs to their first CIF Norcal championship in school history. … St. Francis was given the No. 4 seed in Division I and will have an interesting matchup with No. 5 Berkeley. The Yellow Jackets were the Cinderella team of the North Coast Section Division I bracket, beating Monte Vista and Dougherty Valley en route to the section title. St. Francis has been dominant all year, but will look to bounce back after losing its first match of the season to Mitty in the section title on Saturday. … Dougherty Valley earned the No. 1 seed in Division II. Tristan Casella’s 16 goals this season has led the Wildcats to being one of the hottest teams in Northern California. Dougherty Valley should be the favorites to make a run at the title in Division II. They have proven to be a top team in NCS, beating the likes of De La Salle, Clayton Valley and Granada in the past month … After winning the NCS Division II crown, Las Lomas was given the No. 6 seed in Norcal Division II. Las Lomas hasn’t lost since Dec. 22 and won the Diablo Athletic League title earlier this season. … After being upset in the NCS Division I semifinal by Maria Carrillo, Newark Memorial will get a shot to win CIF Norcal Division III title as they were awarded the No. 1 seed. The Cougars will be heavy favorites, having home field advantage throughout the playoffs. They will face No. 8 Everett Alvarez at home Tuesday.

    Girls: Top storylines

    Kamryn Rosa and No. 1 seed St. Francis will look to capture its second consecutive CIF Division I Norcal championship. Rosa has been on a tear as of late, scoring eight goals in the Lancers’ last three matches including a midfield goal that helped lift St. Francis over Mitty in the CCS Division I championship match Saturday. St. Francis’ first round matchup will be against No. 8 Carondelet who the Lancers beat in the CIF Norcal championship last year. … Mitty was given the No. 4 seed and will play Davis Senior High School in its first round matchup. If St. Francis ends up winning its first round match and the Monarchs get a win over Davis, it will set up a CCS Division I championship rematch between the two rival schools in the second round of CIF Norcals. … Two East Bay Athletic League schools made it to the Norcal regionals. No. 3 San Ramon Valley, who won NCS the NCS Division I title over Carondelet with a late goal, will play host to visiting No. 6 Leigh. The Wolves will be led by Ella Beardslee who shot the winning goal Saturday. Amador Valley was given the No. 7 seed and will play at Del Oro on Tuesday. NCS Division II runner up Las Lomas was placed as the No. 6 seed in Norcal Division II. The Knights will travel to No. 3 Sequoia High School for its first round matchup.
