NC Cherokee may soon sell marijuana to any adults who want it, tribal official says

    [ad_1]

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in western North Carolina could soon expand sales at its new medical cannabis superstore to all adults, a tribal council member said at a recent council work session.

Great Smoky Cannabis Company opened Saturday as the only dispensary in the state where such marijuana sales are legal. Sales are limited to those with a medical cannabis card issued by the tribe’s Cannabis Control Board or a similar board out of state.

At a Cherokee tribal council work session Monday, April 15, 2024, council member Boyd Owle, far right, announces that the tribe’s adult-use cannabis ordinance should be finished and voted on in June. That would open the tribe’s medical cannabis dispensary to recreational-use adult buyers.

The dispensary is in the tribe’s massive former bingo hall at U.S. 19 and Bingo Loop Road, near Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, 46 miles west of Asheville in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Happy 4.20 & Welcome to our Grand Opening!” reads the message on the dispensary website.

The store opened with at least 34,000 “fully tested, certified products,” said Forrest Parker, general manager of Qualla Enterprises, the Cherokee cannabis subsidiary.

Products include flower, vape items, edibles and topicals, officials said.

Recreational sales targeted for June, official says

Also Saturday, State Rep. Zach Hawkins, D-Durham, said he’s filing legislation “to further support the (marijuana) decriminalizing and legalization movement.” Marijuana remains illegal in North Carolina and federally.

April 20 is recognized by marijuana users and producers as the national cannabis holiday.

In a historic vote on Sept. 7, tribal members by 70% approved adult use of marijuana on tribal land. The tribe on the 57,000-acre Qualla Boundary had already approved the use and controlled sale of medical cannabis.

Adult or recreational use remains illegal on the Qualla Boundary until the tribal council finishes crafting and then approves an adult use ordinance.

That could happen in June, council member Boyd Owle said at the end of a council work session Monday called to continue work on the ordinance.

Owle urged patience to people wondering why it’s taking so long since the September vote to legalize adult use.

“It’s going to take some time,” he said. “Let’s get it right before we put it out there. But we’re on the right track. I’d like to see it on the agenda come June and approve recreational.”

Owle is serving his third-straight term as tribal council representative for the Birdtown and 3200 Acre Tract communities.

No council member objected to Owle’s timetable before the meeting adjourned. Neither did any officials with Qualla Enterprises LLC in the audience. More work sessions will be held to complete the ordinance, Owle said.

“Just be patient so we can work on this and get it going and make sure it’s correct,” Owle said, adding that his message was to the general public that overwhelming approved adult-use sales.

    “How proud that I am”

Parker called the dispensary opening the culmination of “a big week.”

“Thank you to y’all,” he told the tribal council Monday. “It’s a monumental, historic week for our tribe, and I appreciate your working so hard. The people at Qualla, we appreciate it.”

“I just want to tell the community how proud that I am of this crew of people,” Parker said. “And I want them to know we’re working every day to make sure we do this in the most efficient way, and in a way that you guys and the community can be proud of what we’re doing.”

    Potential revenues

The dispensary could generate nearly $206 million in gross sales revenues in its first year if limited to medical patients, compared with $385 million if product is available to all adult users, The Charlotte Observer previously reported.

The figures were released by Qualla Enterprises before last year’s adult-use referendum. Cannabis industry consultant HedgeRow Analysis developed the estimates for Qualla Enterprises.

In its fifth year, the dispensary could generate a respective $578 million and $843 million in gross sales revenues, according to the HedgeRow Analysis estimates.

Watch Flagman light it up (figuratively) at Will’s Pub on 4/20

Yes, you could spend your 4/20 at home, partaking and zoning out to Wizard of Oz synced to Dark Side of the Moon or whatever strikes your fancy, but given that April 20 is a Saturday this year maybe hit the town and take your chances. You’ll be sure to find kindred spirits at concerts, so here’s a rundown of four possibly very 420-friendly shows on the big day that are sure to have you blissfully nodding your head along to the music. Wait, what were we talking about again?

    Reggae Day at Boxi Park
Noon, Boxi Park, 6877 Tavistock Lakes Blvd., $20-$25

Reggae and 4/20 go hand in hand. Especially if both of those hands are rolling a doobie. But seriously, marijuana and reggae have a longstanding harmonious relationship, far predating even the immortal lyric from Bob Marley’s 1971 record Kaya where he sings “I’m so high, I even touch the sky.” The second annual Reggae Day at Boxi Park sees Lake Nona mellowing out and getting into the 420 spirit in earnest. The mini-fest is headlined by Jemere Morgan, grandson of reggae legend Denroy Morgan. Morgan formerly fronted New York City reggae act the Black Eagles, but now he’s a solo artist performing and recording both covers and original music. Plus, Orlando locals Shamanic Rootz will bring the infectious energy and good vibes. Shamanic Rootz have established a devoted fanbase locally and internationally due to their impassioned lyrics and devotion to reggae music. Rik Jam, Dal-Wayne, King Tappa, NostalJah, EarthKry, and Jah Sun fill out the bill ably. The music won’t stop until midnight, with DJ Crossfire and DJ RED spinning between bands.

    420 Fest
4:20 p.m. (cough), West End Trading Co., 202 S. Sanford Ave., Sanford, free

West End’s first-ever 420 Fest is a free street party and celebration of 420 with a lineup of reggae bands starting at — but of course — 4:20 p.m. This fest is hosted by actor Greg Runge, from The Cops Did It or Extinction Level Event. The lineup features familiar Florida faves The Intracoastals, Oklahoma Stackhouse, Smyrna Erb, Inity Rebel Music, Neverless, Vibes Farm and Root Sea. Guests can grab a famous Sunshine State Bomb at the West End and take in the sights of West End Live and the Wild Wild West End, then do it all again — no one’s judging if you’ve forgotten which spots you’ve hit. Keep the good vibes rolling at the new weed-themed concept The Joint at West End and try their new pre-roll wraps, blazed wings, dope sliders and more. Festivalgoers can also take the high road over to get a medical card exam from Cannabis Card Orlando. An outdoor party means it’s that much easier to light up outside, and the clouds of smoke no doubt billowing from the stage will provide much-needed cover. Sounds dope!

    Stoned Mary
    6 p.m., Conduit, 6700 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, $15-$20.

To quote William Shakespeare, what’s in a name? Well, plenty, if you happen to have the word “stoned” in your moniker and are playing Orlando on April 20, when these Tampa rockers play a live and loud bill of Central Florida acts that lean toward the heavier side at Conduit. Despite the name, Stoned Mary are neither a stoner-rock band nor a jam band. Instead, they whip up a hooky storm of Paramore-esque serrated pop grooves, which … you know what? You’re already in the door, you’re feeling suddenly very agreeable, so you might as well stay. Also appearing on the bill are Burial Joy, Nailwound, Fiends, Werewolves and NOT, who may or may not kill that buzz. You can’t smoke inside Conduit, but you might be able to furtively light up in the smoking area out front. (That’s on you, space cowboy. Security might want a word.) Post-show or between sets, the nearby two-fer of Subway and Fratello’s should ease any and all cases of the munchies, regardless of palates.

    Flagman
    7 p.m., Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave., $15
Orlando freakout rockers Flagman evoke the unhinged musical adventurism of Primus, Faith No More and Tool — and you’d best believe those FFOs are music to any dual stoner/music head’s ears. If you’d like to stick around the Mills 50 area and have your psyche duly fried, this locals-heavy show is the move on Saturday. Also appearing on the bill are Elders, Space Corolla, Cloutchasr and Sky Navy. You can take your chances in the Dirty Laundry patio out back, but we’re not suggesting anything. (Though Big Tree Park at night seems like a gorgeous spot to … stargaze.) Tako Cheena being close at hand should provide you with any munchie-related sustenance you need.

  • 7 Suggestions To Celebrate 4/20

    7 Suggestions To Celebrate 4/20

    [ad_1]

The cannabis world has changed since 1971 when five students in California coined the phrase 4/20. They used a treasure map to hunt for an abandoned marijuana crop, but today Canada, 24 states, DC and more have legal dispensaries peppering the big and small towns. Since then, the movement and public opinion has done a 180 with 85% of the public believing marijuana should be legal in some form. Fox covers the cannabis industry in their business news and even the President mentioned it in his State of the Union Address.

RELATED: People Who Use Weed Also Do More Of Another Fun Thing

From sneaking around and trying to keep cool, to the new trend of California sober, cannabis has had a make over worthy of any streaming service. DIY Queen Martha Stewart helped move marijuana to the mainstream. Aside from a few politicians who want nanny states, the public is more curious the concerned.  According to BDSA, a leading analytical firm which covers cannabis, 49% of people who consume cannabis have done it with a gummy.  Dispensary bought goods are a thing.  Healthier than alcohol, Gen Z has drifted away from booze and are settling into weed. To mark the acceptance here are 7 suggestions to celebrate 4/20.

    Coffee wake and bake

Kick off the day with a little something special in your coffee. This combination of the energizing effects of caffeine and the relaxing effects of cannabis can provide a unique and enjoyable experience which starts your day in a good mood. Excellent for the canna-newbie or the seasoned consumer – start with a low dose of 2.5mg.

    Share the joy

With all of Canada and over 50% of the country having access to legal weed – now is the time to maybe do a mini treat bag, a simple gift or an edible exchange.  You can take some cute tiny bags and drop one or two edibles in and share it with friends who may be curious.   Most edibles and gummies come in packs of 10 – why not grab a couple of extra and share them people who may have asked about it or who really need to chill.

    Do something meaningful

The stigma has faded so why not embrace the spirit of the stoner and do something for your fellow man. Donating blood is a great way to make an impact, get a free cookie and help out. Another way is to mix up your dispensary choice to see who is doing something for the community on 4/20.

Learn how to roll the perfect joints

Something interesting and fun you can try out is learning how to roll joints. While there are hundreds of tutorials out there (and this helpful guide), here is one which will help you hone your craft.

    Watch some stoner movies

If you want to chill and maybe have some self care, snacks, me time, why not snuggle in for a movie night. Here’s a list of recommendations.

    Have a dance party

study claims that there are dance moves that are scientifically sexy

A dance party can be for 1, 2, 10 or 100…your choice! Take time to let your body move – be it alone in the kitchen, a tango for two leading to the bedroom (wink wink) or invite a few friends or go to a club, meet up or head something where your feet, body, mind and music meld into motion.

    Take advantage of the 4/20

Some dispensaries have great sales, merchandise, music and more. Maybe take a retail tour so see what is up for the holiday – you could save a few bucks!

  • CBD, Hemp industry undergoing rapid growth – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

CBD, Hemp industry undergoing rapid growth – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    [ad_1]

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Depending on your hobbies and interests, Thursday might be a holiday of sorts.

    That’s because it’s April 20th, better known as 420.

For business owners Ryan Dills and Joe Salome, it’s the biggest day of the year.

“For the cannabis industry and for us as well, this is Christmas,” Salome said. “This is definitely our Christmas Day.”

It opens the gate for spring and summer sales.

“420 is kind of the kickoff of the retail season for us,” Dills said.

And it’s one heckuva kick. Since starting the Georgia Hemp Company almost five years ago, they’ve already expanded to four locations throughout Metro Atlanta.

It’s a sharp change in a short amount of time.

“I used to get shut down by every credit card processor, Venmo, and PayPal to begin with,” Salome said. “Now it’s a little bit different.”

CBD is now a $20 billion industry. Bloomberg estimates it could hit $60 billion by the end of the decade.

And yet, that doesn’t explain why 420 is, well, 420.

“I think mainly because of pop culture, especially now with the talk of legalization,” said a customer who fittingly identified himself as “Spicoli”.

Still, at this time, cannabis is illegal in Georgia.

“Illegal or regulated,” Salome corrected. “Regulated is a better way to say it.”

But with the state missing out on hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue for any number of public uses, Dills and Salome are betting it won’t be long until the industry…

  • The Best Movies To Watch Stoned On 420, According To Cannabis Pros

The Best Movies To Watch Stoned On 420, According To Cannabis Pros

    [ad_1]

Although cannabis is the focus of 420, many people also use the hangover holiday to appreciate their favorite foods, films and music on a higher level.

Films can be especially enjoyable under the influence of marijuana, as anyone who has seen “Avatar: The Way Of Water” after eating edibles can attest.

“Let me tell you, it was out of this world — literally!” is how Jeff Dillon of Smoakland, a cannabis delivery service in Oakland, California, described his experience watching the film. “The 3D effects had me feeling like I was floating in space, and that water ― whoa baby, that water was like a psychedelic dream. I’m pretty sure I saw a unicorn swimming around in there.”

Allison Krongard, co-founder of Her Highness, which describes itself as a “female-forward” cannabis brand, explained how cannabis enhances the film-viewing experience.

“Cannabis heightens our senses, visuals and sounds are more vivid, it [keeps] you in the present and can draw you deeper into the story,” she told HuffPost by email. “When I’m high I notice art, architecture and costumes more readily. Movies especially in a good theater are richer when you’re high.”

Krongard’s own taste in stoner movies doesn’t lean toward sci-fi or fantasy, though.

It’s very difficult to pinpoint a single favorite movie to watch stoned because I’ve been consuming weed for 30 years, but it could be ‘Madonna: Truth or Dare’ or [the ‘Pitch Perfect’ trilogy]. I want to hear music when I’m high and laugh. I want visual stimulation, and don’t want to see anyone die or act miserable, no sad endings, pets dying or difficult plot twists.”

“I don’t know why people love watching ‘Inception’ high. I’ve watched it 3 times stoned and I’m still lost in the dream or the reality.”

Considering Rob Sims played in the NFL before helping to launch the cannabis company Primitiv, it’s probably no surprise his favorite stoner flick has a football theme.

“‘Avatar’ is hard to beat but one of my favorites is ‘Any Given Sunday,’” Sims told HuffPost by email. “Being a former professional football player it hits home ― and Al Pacino’s dialogues can’t be beat.”

Sims’ business partner, Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee and former wide receiver Calvin Johnson Jr., admits he’s torn between two films.

“‘Pineapple Express’ and ‘Tropic Thunder,’” Johnson told HuffPost by email. “I couldn’t just pick one. But ’Pineapple Express’ is a classic comedy as it goes on the wild story involving the government and black-market cannabis.”

Stephen Walden, the co-founder and COO of Farming First, a central California-based cannabis cultivator, admits he loves “The Big Lebowski” ― especially if he can get interactive with the film.

“The Dude abides. The Dude also likes to smoke doobies,” Walden explained to HuffPost. “Being able to smoke a joint alongside Jeff Bridges while watching the greatest movie of all time is unmatched.”

Meanwhile, Scott Vasterling of Humboldt Family Farms in Northern California is a sucker for a film starring another stoner icon: “Fast Times At Ridgemont High.”

“All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I’m fine,” Vasterling said, quoting a famous line from Sean Penn’s Jeff Spicoli character.

And some people’s favorite stoner movies make them think about things in new ways.

Tamara Anderson, the founder of Culinary & Cannabis, an interactive cannabis event production company in Irvine, California, swears by the much-maligned comedy “Baby Geniuses.”

“It’s my favorite movie to watch stoned because as a parent it just made me respect my children as people,” she told HuffPost by email.

But not everyone is into watching movies high.

Former NFL running back Ricky Williams, CEO of the Highsman cannabis brand, admits he doesn’t actually like to watch films when he’s smoking.

“For me it has to be a really good movie I can get into, otherwise I just see actors acting,” he told HuffPost by email. “I prefer listening to music.”

Chris Karakosta, the general manager of the Belushi’s Farm cannabis brand and actor Jim Belushi’s cousin, jokes that there is one type of movie he cannot watch while high.

I have so many that it’s hard to pick just one,” he told HuffPost by email. “However, I can tell you the movies that I can’t watch … anything with my cousin Jim Belushi in it! Even though they are great, I work with him every day so it’s time for a break.”
