ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Summer camps are winding down as we get closer to the start of the school year.
And after visiting with some STEM camps in Pinellas County this month, we’re introducing you to the teacher behind the ones held at Thurgood Middle School.
Amy Greth is a math and STEM teacher at Thurgood Middle School and she facilitates the STEM camps here.
“Exposing the students to different activities and different experiences open their eyes to different things they have interest in,” Greth said. “So then as they move through their education, they can start to find what makes them excited.”
STEM makes Greth super excited, she said.
“I enjoy it so much,” Greth said. “And I enjoy watching the students get to be creative and think outside the box and work with one another to design things that they didn’t even think they could possibly do.”
During camp this week, she was helping her students with coding and working with robots. In between the data driven lessons are ones focused on working together and the idea of not giving up.
“Perseverance,” she said. “When something doesn’t work right, being able to back it up and say okay what can I do differently to make it work and then trying new things.”
Student Avery Marshall said he enjoys Miss Greth’s class because he always learns something new.
“She’s an awesome teacher because she won’t tell you the answer but she’ll help you out,” he said. “And when Miss Greth watches her students help one another, after learning something new.”
Greth, who has 20-plus years of teaching experience and has been at Thurgood Marshall Middle School for six years, said teaching is what she was made to do.
“That just makes it feel like this is where I belong,” she said.
