A small plane with an engine issue made an emergency landing Monday afternoon on the sand at Huntington State Beach in Huntington Beach.
The Piper PA-28 with two people on board landed safely at about 2 p.m. just south of Magnolia Street in the seaside Orange County community. There were no reports of injuries.
The pilot reported an engine problem after departure from John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana.
The plane is registered to the Elder Abuse Air Force, a charity organization based at John Wayne Airport that works to protect seniors from financial fraud and physical abuse. Pilot Mike Bremner said they were flying to a meeting in Van Nuys when the engine failed.
“At that point we ran a very quick check to try to get the engine going again,” Bremner said. “Given that we were out about 1,000 feet, we had to determine very quickly where to land. We chose the chose the beach.”
The 121-acre state beach has volleyball and basketball courts and a multi-use trail.
