There are increasing reports that the Eagles are hesitant to extend Jalen Carter, with Albert Breer expecting a deal to already have been completed, and a potential hold-in through OTAs, minicamps, and perhaps preseason.
But is there really cause for concern?
Carter is about to enter his 4th season with the Philadelphia Eagles and is still under contract for at least one more season, and that’s before the $27M 5th year option even comes into play.
Surviving Trade Rumors
The Eagles were undoubtedly involved in conversations with Myles Garrett.
Refusing to make a splash for a 5x All-Pro and 2x Defensive Player of the Year speaks volumes. The Eagles drafted Jalen Carter with the 9th overall pick, and if he was going to be included in a potential Garrett package, then turning down that offer signals a long-term expectation for Carter.
With media members like Chase Senior suggesting the Eagles need to trade even more in a package for a player like Maxx Crosby, who lacks the stats, awards, and impact that Garrett has had in recent years, it puts us in what feels like another A.J. Brown / Dianna Russini situation.
Although rumors might be there and make-believe can get a little crazy, action always speaks louder than words.
5th Year Option
It was late April when the Eagles exercised the 5th-year option on DT Jordan Davis. Drafted a year prior to Carter, Davis was entering his 4th year with the team when the 5th year was picked up. Following the 2025 season, Davis was promptly extended to a 3-year, $78M contract before free agency opened.
Under contract for a total of 4 years. One Georgia Bulldog will be remaining with the Eagles until 2029, and I expect Carter to follow suit.
While there’s word that the contract could be monumental in comparison to Will Anderson ($50M), Micah Parsons ($45M), or even Myles Garrett ($41M), there’s also an impact due to the stats and awards these players have already received. Similar comparisons could look at the current top defensive tackle contracts. Dexter Lawrence signed an extension with the Bengals that added 1 year, $28M to his already existing contract. Or former Eagles DT Milton Williams signing a 4-year, $104M deal with New England.
Last week, the Titans extended Jeffery Simmons to a 3-year, $105.8M contract. With 11 Sacks in 2025, 4 Pro Bowl nods, and multiple All-Pro selections. Simmons became the highest-paid defensive tackle in terms of average salary.
With several comparable contracts to what the Eagles could offer Carter within the next year and a half, where do you have his contract valued?
