“It’s like Ultimate Frisbee meets rugby, while a game of dodgeball is going on,” said Lindsey Simpson, captain of the Lost Boys Quadball Club.
ROSEVILLE, Calif. — The West Coast National Qualifiers of Quadball, formerly known as Quidditch from Harry Potter, were in Roseville’s Maidu Regional Park Saturday.
The game is straight from the Harry Potter book series and combines dodgeball, rugby and tag on a field while athletes must carry a plastic pipe between their legs (as if they’re riding a broomstick.)
There are only a few differences between what folks saw in Roseville Saturday versus what’s in the book series.
“First and foremost, we don’t fly. So I think that’s like the biggest, most obvious difference,” said Lindsey Simpson, captain of the Lost Boys Quadball Club. “It’s like Ultimate Frisbee meets rugby, while a game of dodgeball is going on.”
She came up from Los Angeles to compete against teams from across the country this weekend.
“It’s full contact, we are like a mixed gender sport, just like you would see in Harry Potter. I play with people of varying genders and shapes and sizes,” said Simpson. “I’ve been playing forever, and I think it’s the bee’s knees, honestly.”
More than a dozen teams, including more than 200 athletes, came from as far away as New Jersey and Wisconsin for the tournament.
“I think the community is like the greatest thing in the world… Quadball is the most unique, beautiful sport in the world in my opinion,” said Simpson. “So definitely come join us and see what it’s all about ’cause it’s really cool.”
Tickets are $5 per day in advance and available online and $10 per day when the tournament starts. Games start at 8 a.m. both days.
