Years after doctors said he would never be able to walk, one Elkhart teen is completing his Eagle Scout project.Jack Selby is building a Marian Garden for St. Mary-Holy Cross Catholic Church in Elkhart.It will be a special spot for people to come and pray around a statue of the Holy Virgin Mary.It’s the final piece of what’s been a rewarding scouting experience for the 17-year-old.But Selby hasn’t gotten here without his own hardships.He was born at 25 weeks, only weighing 1 pound and 11 ounces.It led to some doubting what Jack would be able to do in his life.”We had a physical therapist tell us that he would never walk and that he would be wheelchair-bound,” Susan Selby, Jack’s mother, said.However, after just four months in therapy, he was walking.And after 10-plus years of scouting, he’s giving back to the church he’s called home.Because for Selby, there’s always time to help others.”Basically just doing good things for people,” Jack Selby said.His mother said he brings joy to those who know him.”His dad and I are very proud of him, and we couldn’t ask for a better son,” she said.Selby must complete the project by his 18th birthday on May 2 to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.
