Hot weekend for July Fourth festivities

  • Temperatures will be in the 90s to 100s across the eastern two-thirds of the country
  • Storm chances increase across the Plains east to the Mid-Atlantic
  • Some storms will become severe especially in the Mid-Atlantic including the Nation’s Capital

A dome of high pressure will presist in the Tennessee and Ohio River valleys, leading to extreme heat on the East Coast and Midwest. It will also contribute to a continued severe weather risk for the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and Northeast. 

Fourth of July forecast

The pattern won’t change much for the Fourth of July. Heat builds across the East Coast with high temperatures in the triple digits. Scattered showers and storms will be possible in the Great Lakes, Southeast and Midwest, while warm and dry weather settles in across the Rockies. The coolest weather of the day will be found on the Pacific Coast with highs in the 60s and 70s. 


Sunday’s forecast

The extreme heat finally starts to break in the Northeast, but temperatures will still run well above average for early July for many places east of the Mississippi River. Scattered showers and storms will also pop up where heat and humidity highest, the East Coast, Southeast and Ohio River Valley.
