Queen Amalia’s Diamond Parure
Today marks the Anniversary of the Birth of Queen Amalia of Greece, who was born on this day in 1818! The Duchess of Oldenburg who became the Queen of the first Greek King from 1836 to 1862, and spent the rest of her life in exile in the King’s native Bavaria, we are featuring Queen Amalia’s Diamond Parure which we just saw in Paris!

Queen Amalia of Greece wore a pair of grand diamond earrings and diamond brooches for a portrait by Joseph Karl Stieler in 1837, the year after her marriage to King Otto of Greece.
According to family tradition, at some point Queen Amalia passed along her diamonds to Count Maximilian von und zu Arco-Zinneberg, who had them reset by 1867, when his son, Count Karl, married Countess Mathilde Wolff-Metternich zur Grach. The Parure now comprises a fringe necklace of graduated old-mine cut diamonds with a central diamond cluster pendant, a pair of ear pendants, each set with old-mine cut diamonds with a diamond cluster top, and three diamond-set sunburst brooches, mounted in silver and gold, mid-19th Century.
The Diamond Parure came up for Auction at Sotheby’s in Geneva in 1995, and appeared at Christie’s in Geneva in 2014, where it fetched CHF 269,000 after an estimate of CHF 45,000 – CHF 70,000.
Queen Amalia’s Diamond Parure is now part of the Qatar Royal Family’s Al Thani Collection, and is currently on display in the ‘Dynastic Jewels’ Exhibition at the Hôtel de la Marine in Paris.

Princess Tatiana Radziwiłł
Sad news today! Princess Tatiana Radziwiłł, Mrs Fruchaud has passed away at the age of 86. The nurse and bacteriologist was the daughter of a Polish Prince and a Greek Princess, and the granddaughter of the legendary Princess Marie Bonaparte, as well as being the lifelong friend of Queen Sofia of Spain.
The only daughter of Prince Dominic Radziwiłł and Princess Eugenie of Greece and Denmark, Princess Tatiana was born in France just before the declaration of war and spent some years of her childhood with the Greek Royal Family in exile in South Africa during World War II.
Princess Tatiana grew up in France, with frequent visits to Greece, and holidays around the world with her grandmother, the glamorous Princess Marie Bonaparte, a patron of Freud. Since childhood, Princess Tatiana became close friends with her cousin Princess Sophia of Greece, now Queen Sofia of Spain, and the two have remained lifelong friends ever since.
Princess Tatiana attended many grand events, including the Wedding of Prince Juan Carlos of Spain and Princess Sofia of Greece, the Wedding of King Constantine of Greece and Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark, the Greek Monarchy Centenary, and the Wedding of Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark, and was also linked to Crown Prince Harald of Norway in the 1960s.
After meeting while she was studying nursing and bacteriology at the University of Paris, Princess Tatiana married Dr John-Henri Fruchaud at the Catholic Church in Irakleio in Athens in 1966, settling in Paris, where they had two children, Fabiola and Alexis.
Princess Tatiana remained close to the Greek, Spanish, and Danish Royal Families throughout her life, attending the Wedding of Prince Philippos of Greece, the Funeral of King Constantine II of Greece, and the Wedding of Princess Theodora of Greece in recent years, and most recently a Lunch at the El Pardo Palace in Madrid last month.

HSH Princess Tatiana Radziwill
Prince and Princess George, Princess Tatiana, and Princess Eugenie Marlene A Eilers Koenig Collection HSH Princess Tatiana Radziwill has died at the age of 86. She died on Friday, December 19. The Princess, a nurse and bacteriologist, was Queen Sofia’s closest friend.
She was born Tatiana Maria Renata Eugenia Elisabeth Margarete Radziwill in Rouen, France, on August 28, 1939, the daughter of HSH Prince Dominik Radziwill (1911- and Princess Eugenie of Greece and Denmark (1910-1989).
In May 1940, Germany invaded France. Prince Dominik, who had served as an officer in the Polish Army, and his family, fled France and settled in South Africa, where they were joined by Princess Eugenie’s parents, Prince and Princess George of Greece and Denmark. Princess George, a noted psychoanalyst, was born Princess Marie Bonaparte.

Prince George of Greece and Denmark with Tatiana and her younger brother, George Her paternal grandfather, HSH Prince Hieronim Mikołaj Radziwiłł, took part in Polish uprisings during the Second World War. He was arrested by the Soviets in February 1945 and deported to a gulag in the Soviet Union. He died in the gulag in April 1945. His first wife, H.I.H. Archduchess Renata of Austria, died in 1935.

Archduchess Renata and Prince Hieronim Radziwill Other members of the Greek royal family who sought refuge in South Africa included Crown Princess Frederica and her young children, Princess Sophia, Crown Prince Constantine, and Princess Irene.

Prince and Princess George and Princess Eugenie Marlene A Eilers Koenig Collection Sophie was nine months older than Tatiana, who was her second cousin. According to The Queen Up Close, Sofia recalled: “Tatiana and I each had our own doll, but only one stroller to take them for walks. We would fight, each of us pulling in different directions to see who would get it. And, of course, our fights would end up causing arguments between our mothers, as it happens in any family.”
In 1945, the family returned to France. The following year, Tatiana’s parents divorced. In 1947, Prince Dominic married Lidia Bloodgood, and two years later, Princess Eugenie married Prince Raimondo della Torre e Tasso, 2nd Duke of Castel Duino.
Tatiana attended schools in France and Greece, and was often invited to royal events, including Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation, as Prince Philip and her mother were first cousins. She was one of several dozen eligible royals who took part in a royal cruise aboard the Greek royal yacht Agammemon in 1954. Queen Frederika hosted the cruise and arranged for young European royals to mix and mingle.
In 1959, she was one of eleven princesses invited to a ball in honor of King Baudouin of the Belgians, who at the time was seeking a wife.
The Princess was a bridesmaid in the weddings of Princess Sofia and the future King Juan Carlos of Spain, and King Constantine II and Princess Anne Marie of Denmark.
Although there were rumors that she would marry Crown Prince Harald of Norway, she fell in love with a French cardiologist, Jean Henri Fruchaud. They met while both were students at the University of Paris. Princess Tatiana was studying nursing and bacteriology. She was a registered nurse and bacteriologist for many years.
Although there were rumors that she would marry Crown Prince Harald of Norway, Tatiana preferred the young French doctor. Their civil wedding took place on March 24, 1966, in the French Embassy in Athens. A Roman Catholic wedding took place on March 26, with a reception held at the Royal Palace in Athens.

Marlene A Eilers Koenig Collection “Tatiana and I have always been very close friends, intimate friends. Before we got married, after …. Although she now lives in Paris,m we see each other very often,” Sofia confided to her biographer, Pilar Urbano.

Princess Tatiana is survived by her husband, Dr. John-Henri Fruchaud, and their two children, Fabiola (1967) and Alexis (1969). Infanta Elena’s Diamond Chain Necklace
Happy Birthday to Infanta Elena of Spain, Duchess of Lugo, who turns 62 today! The elder sister of the current Spanish Sovereign, the Infanta was a working member of the Spanish Royal family for almost three decades, amassing a splendid jewellery collection, which includes several contemporary pieces, such as the Diamond Chain Necklace which we are featuring today!
The necklace is an elegant and resolutely modern creation, crafted in platinum and entirely set with diamonds. Its design is composed of approximately twenty articulated rectangular links, each pavé-set with brilliant-cut diamonds.
According to reports, the diamond chain necklace was a gift from Don Jaime de Marichalar to his wife to celebrate the birth of their eldest son, Felipe de Marichalar y Borbón, in 1998. The jewel made its debut at the infant’s christening, although not in its now-familiar form. For that occasion, the necklace was cleverly converted into a pair of bracelets, a transformation that highlights the remarkable versatility of the design.
Infanta Elena later wore the piece in its necklace configuration on numerous occasions, often styling it with a pair of long diamond chain earrings finished with two pearl drops. These earrings appear to have been designed as part of the same suite.
The diamond chain necklace became something of a signature jewel for the Infanta during the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was notably paired with the Marichalar Tiara for several state banquets at the Royal Palace of Madrid.

Doña Elena also wore the diamond chain both as necklace and bracelets on some family occasions, such as the Wedding of Princess Alexia of Greece in 1999, and the Wedding of Princess Victoria of Borbon-Two Sicilies in 2005.
On at least one occasion, Infanta Elena further personalized the piece by suspending a large aquamarine and diamond pendant from the chain. It has been some time since we last saw this diamond necklace in public, but let’s hope it will one day make a reappearance—either on Infanta Elena herself or perhaps on a younger generation.
This article was written by assistant editor, David Rato, who runs the Spanish Royal Jewels account on Instagram!

Funeral of Princess Victoria Louise, Duchess of Brunswick
The Funeral of Princess Victoria Louise, Duchess of Brunswick was held at Brunswick Cathedral, before the burial in in front of the Royal Mausoleum (Welfenmausoleum) in the Berggarten at the Herrenhausen Gardens in Hanover.
Crowds thronged in and around Brunswick Cathedral, St. Blasius, to bid farewell on Thursday to the last “Kaiser’s daughter,” Duchess Victoria Louise of Brunswick-Lüneburg, who died on November 11. One chair—decorated with white roses and irises—remained empty. It had been the deceased’s ancestral seat.
“The Duchess wished for a joyful funeral service. That’s why we are singing ‘Praise the Lord,’” said Cathedral Preacher Armin Kraft, a close confidant of the 88-year-old until the very end.
The deceased herself had determined and stipulated all the details of the final event of her rich life. She also stipulated that the collection at the end of the service should be donated to the World Hunger Relief organization. The simple, dignified ceremony unfolded exactly as she had envisioned it
