After packages of baby wipes sold under Target’s “Up & Up” brand were recalled early last month, the recall classification has been elevated to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s most severe level.According to the initial recall announcement on the Food and Drug Administration’s website from June 4, testing revealed the presence of two different types of bacteria, Burkholderia cepacia and Burkholderia gladioli, in product samples of the fragrance-free and cucumber-scented wipes. On Monday, the FDA designated the recall as a Class I recall, which the FDA defines as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”The Burkholderia cepacia and Burkholderia gladioli bacteria, while causing only local infections in healthy adults exposed to them through skin lesions, pose a major risk to immunocompromised people and children. In these cases, infections are more likely to spread to the bloodstream, according to the FDA.The FDA says customers should immediately stop using these products and should return them to Target for a full refund. The recall applies to the following products:Up & Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes20 Count: UPC 08523926595672 Count: UPC 085239265949216 Count: UPC 085239265963800 Count: UPC 0852392661371,200 Count: UPC 085239266090The fragrance-free wipes have a manufacturing date code of Nov. 7, 2025 to May 5, 2026, and expiration dates between May 10, 2028 and Nov. 5, 2028.Up & Up Fresh Cucumber-Scented Baby Wipes72 Count: UPC 085239265970216 Count: UPC 085239265994800 Count: UPC 085239265987The fresh cucumber-scented wipes have a manufacturing code of Dec. 29, 2025 to Dec. 30, 2025, and expiration dates between June 29, 2028 and June 30, 2028.
