Artificial was able to be saved after all. Neon bought the Sam Altman biopic less than two weeks after Amazon MGM dropped the film from its lineup, Puck reports. The film, starring Andrew Garfield, follows Altman’s dramatic firing and rehiring at OpenAI, which took place in a matter of days. Amazon MGM let the Luca Guadagnino–directed film go, even though it was almost finished, shortly after announcing a $50 billion deal with OpenAI in February. “We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker – not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue,” Amazon MGM said at the time. “We believe that Artificial will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home.” Mubi was reportedly also in negotiations to release the film. Variety reports that Netflix, A24, and Focus did not pursue it.
Artificial is reportedly in postproduction. The film was written by Simon Rich and also stars Monica Barbaro and Yura Borisov.
