An apparent police standoff has closed a major Massachusetts highway during rush hour on Tuesday.
Interstate 495 is temporarily closed in Lowell because of police activity, Massachusetts State Police and the state’s Department of Transportation said Tuesday.
A pickup truck stopped in the median of the highway was seen surrounded by several police cruisers, with officers standing behind them.
Officials haven’t offered any specific details on what required the highway to be closed or if anyone was hurt. NBC10 Boston has reached out to Massachusetts State Police for more information.
Northbound traffic was being diverted from I-495 at Route 3 and southbound traffic at Route 38, according to MassDOT. Drivers were urged to avoid the area if they could.
Officials didn’t share when they expected to reopen the highway.
Traffic cameras showed vehicles backed up on the highway.
This is a developing news story that will be updated.
