PORTLAND, Ore. – Two people were taken into custody Tuesday morning after an assault that began on a TriMet MAX train and continued onto a downtown Portland sidewalk, leaving one man seriously injured, authorities said.
Detectives with TriMet’s Transit Police, led by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, are investigating the incident, which unfolded around 10:20 a.m. near Southwest 5th Avenue and Southwest Madison Street.
According to Transit Police, officers responded alongside the Portland Police Bureau to reports of a disturbance in the area. A preliminary investigation indicates that an altercation on a TriMet MAX train escalated into an assault and continued onto the sidewalk.
The victim, an adult man, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Paramedics transported him to a hospital with wounds consistent with a stabbing and physical assault, officials said.
The two suspects fled the scene before officers arrived. Just before 11 a.m., Portland police officers located two males near Lincoln High School who matched the suspects’ descriptions.
Officers initiated a foot pursuit, and the suspects entered the high school building. Police took both into custody inside the school without further incident. Authorities said no one inside Lincoln High School was injured.
The suspects are 15 and 22 years old. Investigators have not determined whether either suspect has any connection to the school.
At this time, officials say there is no indication the suspects and the victim knew each other. The motive and circumstances surrounding the assault remain under investigation.
The 15-year-old will be booked into the Multnomah County Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center, and the 22-year-old will be lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center.
