Lake Mary teacher arrested for inappropriate conduct with student, officials say

A Lake Mary teacher was placed behind bars after being accused of inappropriate conduct with a student, according to Seminole County Public Schools.The teacher was identified as 55-year-old Richard Colon. He is a social studies teacher and assistant coach at Lake Mary High School.Colon bonded out of jail Friday evening following a court appearance earlier in the day where a judge set his bond at $80,000. “He has been with the district for 29 years. He is a teacher of AP World History and an Assistant Coach for the Girls Soccer team,” said the communications officer for Seminole County Public Schools, Katherine Crnkovich.The school principal received a tip about the alleged misconduct. Colon was immediately placed on administrative leave.According to Seminole Schools officials, the incident was reported to the Department of Family and Children Services and Law Enforcement.Colon was then placed under arrest Thursday afternoon. He is now facing the following charges:Transmission of obscene material harmful to minors Using a computer to seduce a childThe arrest report said Colon and the victim “… were having sexual conversations via text over multiple applications while (victim) was at her home” and that “… Colon would explicitly describe sexual activity involving himself and (victim)… “The arrest report also said Colon would include “detailed descriptions of sex acts…” He also sent inappropriate photos of himself to the victim. Lake Mary Principal Dr. Mickey Reynolds sent a message to the school family which says in part:”I want you to know that any allegations of misconduct by our staff will be taken seriously and handled quickly. We will continue to fully cooperate and assist law enforcement as they continue their investigation. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and any type of behavior that jeopardizes that safety will not be tolerated at Seminole County Public Schools.”Seminole County Public Schools said they will continue assisting law enforcement as they investigate.
