Ingredients for a Shamrock Poke Cake

For the Cake

Don’t Make This Mistake with Jello Poke Cakes!

On a whim, I decided to buy some green sanding sugar sprinkles at Walmart. It was hands-down, the biggest mistake in this recipe not only do they not sprinkle well, but the color immediately begins to saturate the frosting and it’s not green at all. It is in fact blue.

Prepare cake as directed on the box, adding a few squeezes of the food coloring gel and bake in an 7×11-inch baking dish.

1 Box White Cake Mix, Green Food Dye

Let cool for 15 minutes on the counter. Using a fork, poke holes about ½-1″ apart on the cake.

Use the hot and cold water according to Jell-O directions to make the jello in a large glass measuring cup.

McDonald’s Bringing Back Shamrock Shake

That’s right, February is flying by, and March is right around the corner. What does that mean? St. Patrick’s Day! McDonald’s is getting ready to bring the luck with their staple, Shamrock Shake, returning to their menu.

McDonald’s announced that their festive green treat will be making a return. Starting Tuesday, February 17, the Shamrock Shake and Oreo Shamrock McFlurry will be back on the menu. The fast food chain announced Thursday the return plan for the festive drink.

“The Shamrock Shake®, made with our classic vanilla soft serve, blended with Shamrock syrup and topped with whipped cream, offers the perfect pairing,” said McDonald’s in a press release.

Both items will be available starting Tuesday nationwide. Customers can also check their mobile app to confirm and place their order ahead.

Residents across Philadelphia area celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, Irish heritage

HADDON TOWNSHIP, New Jersey (WPVI) — Hundreds of people packed Haddon Square to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday.

Haddon Township once again went green for its annual St. Paddy’s Day Pub Crawl. The two-day event, which featured several establishments on the square, drew dozens of people who were draped in their Irish green attire and four-leaf clover necklaces.

By mid-afternoon, the good times were rolling for party-goers like Kevin Luscomb, who told Action News he was in love with the atmosphere.

“It’s terrific-terrific,” Luscomb said. “Everybody’s happy here.”

This year, nearly a dozen bars and restaurants opened their doors for St. Paddy’s Day bar hoppers with hopes of infusing some extra cash or gold into their coffers.

At P.J. Whelihan’s outside event, people came to the party as they indulged in food, dancing, and plenty of beverages.

Having best friends there to enjoy the good vibes was a must for Jeannie Connor, who said she and her friends were Irish and celebrated their heritage together every year.

Connor said she even rushed back to Haddon Township from a wedding in South Carolina so she wouldn’t miss out on any fun.

“It’s very important,” she said. “We all work hard. We raise families. It’s good to have a day to blow off steam and celebrate your heritage.”

To ensure everyone had the opportunity to drink safely, the township offered a free Jitney service so people could get to and from bars without issue.

Michael Cabrera said it was a great way to meet tons of new people and keep the spirit of the day alive.

“I love a good bar crawl just cause you get to meet whoever, wherever, know what I mean? You get to go to different places, try different drinks that everyone else has,” Cabrera told Action News.

While the day was largely about having fun for many people, one kid we spoke to, Logan Kuehner, said he was focused on one of the most important aspects of St. Paddy’s Day: catching a leprechaun.

He even shared his strategies on how to nab one.

“I left a big box out that has muffins so he might think that there was muffins in it,” Kuehner explained. “He climbed in but he didn’t get trapped.”

In Philadelphia, there was no shortage of celebrators out embracing their Irish heritage.

Bargoers at Ryan’s Pub in Manayunk let their Irish roots shine bright.

“My mom’s 100% Irish. I get to tap into that side a little, you know get to enjoy all of that, have some Guinness-best beer out there. So, get to have a great time,” noted Jou Ronzer from West Chester.

St. Paddy’s Day is something Imoni Williams looks forward to every year and says it’s a holiday everyone can embrace.

“Absolutely! Everyone’s Irish today,” she said.

CLEVELAND (WJW) — For well over a century — dating back to 1842 — Cleveland’s St. Patrick’s Day parade has showcased Irish culture. And this Sunday’s event was no different.

Despite some seasonal Northeast Ohio weather (sunny and then snowy and then sunny again), thousands of people could not be deterred from converging on downtown Cleveland decked out in green.

“Everyone gets together and they’re happy for happiness and all the struggles that everyone has gone through,” parade-goer Thomas Shannon told FOX 8 of the event.

The event kicked off just after 2 p.m., rolling down Superior Avenue.

On display as ever was a bevy of colorful floats, various first responders, marching bands and even traditional Irish dancers.

St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday where people wear green, make merry and imbibe…often heavily. In Ireland, up until the mid-twentieth century, the holiday remained modest and grounded in religion. It was not until the swinging 1960s when in Ireland it became the raucous celebration it is today. To help carry on the tradition, here are the best St. Patrick’s Day cocktail recipes.

Boilermaker

You can’t get more of a St. Patrick’s Day drink than a boilermaker. Originally call the Sean O’Farrell, it was created in the 1890s in Montana. When the beer is served as a chaser, the drink is often called simply a shot and a beer.

Ingredients
- 1 ounce whiskey (usually bourbon or rye)
- 8 ounces beer
Create
- Pour the whiskey into a shot glass
- Fill a pint glass halfway with beer.
- Drop the shot glass into the beer.
- Drink
Irish Car Bomb

A variation of the Boilermaker with a little dark history. It hit the scene in 1979 in Wilson’s Saloon in Connecticut by Charles Burke Cronin Oat.^{Originally created as a mixed shot drink called a Grandfather combining Baileys Irish Cream and Kahlúa. On St. Patrick’s Day March 1977 he added Jameson Irish Whiskey to the drink, calling this drink “the IRA.” In 1979, Oat spontaneously dropped this shot into a partially-drunk Guinness, calling the result a Belfast Carbomb or Irish Carbomb. And history was made.}

It’s rarely a good idea to chug anything, but the Irish Shot is an exception, as it benefits from quick consumption. That’s because the Irish cream will react with the acidic beer and begin to curdle if allowed to sit for more than a few seconds. And nobody wants curdled cream in their drink.

Ingredients
- 1/2 ounce Irish whiskey
- 1/2 ounce Baileys Irish cream
- Guinness beer
Create
- Add the Baileys and whiskey into a shot glass, pouring slowly to create a layered effect.
- Drop the shot into a pint glass filled half to three-quarters with the Guinness. Drink immediately.
Vodka Stinger

While not a traditional St. Patrick’s Day cocktail, it does have a new green coloring and has the popular vodka as a base. Created ink 1890, a stinger is made with brandy, crème de menthe, and simple syrup. It is first noted in William Schmidt’s 1892 cocktail book The Flowing Bowl. Immediately popular with New York social set, it spread across the country. A “vodka stinger”, also known as a white spider, uses vodka instead of brandy.
½ oz of white creme de menthe (green if you want the Irish version)

Create

Load a shaker with ice cubes

Pop in all your ingredients, vodka and crème de menthe

Give that shaker a good and energetic whirl

The Chicago River is green today and green is the color of celebrations today! So how to make green beer – well, it isn’t hard. Legend has it, Dr. Thomas Curtincreated green beer we drink today. Dr. Thomas Curtin, a coroner’s physician and eye surgeon, first colored beer for a St. Patrick’s Day party at the Schnerer Club of Morrisania in the Bronx in 1914. It has been popular every since and the green does not change the flavor.

Ingredients
- 12 ounces light color beer like a pilsner and witbier
- 1 drop green food coloring

Cold air mass settles over Chicagoland for St. Patrick’s Day

Sunday is St. Patrick’s Day, but the air will have a winter-like chill.

It may look outside like it did on Saturday, when highs reached the upper 50s on a mild, pleasant day, but it’ll be much colder than that Sunday. A mass of cold, dry air has settled over Chicagoland, which will make 40 degrees a tough goal to reach on St. Patrick’s Day.

There’s also a chance for flurries or snow showers during the early part of the afternoon, as clouds will increase. Temperatures will again be in the high 30s on Monday before warming back up into the low 50s by Tuesday, the first day of spring.

Bay Area kicks off St. Patrick’s Day festivities with 200-drone light show, annual parade

DUBLIN, Calif. (KGO) — The day honoring the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick’s Day, is a global celebration of Irish heritage.

In the Bay Area, one of the biggest celebrations is in the City of Dublin.

On Saturday night, a 200-drone light show marked Dublin’s 40th anniversary in celebrating the holiday.

There was lots of traffic getting into Dublin. But event organizers say the southbound closure of I-680 from the I-580 interchange to Sunol didn’t seem to have much of an impact.

Caltrans says all entrances to Dublin from I-680 and I-580 would be open all weekend, including for Sunday’s iconic Dublin St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Although the holiday is officially Sunday, there was plenty of Irish cheer in Downtown San Francisco Saturday.

The city celebrated its 173rd annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and celebration.

Crowds of people wearing green and shamrocks filled the streets as the parade went from Market and 2nd Streets all the way to Civic Center Plaza.

Prepare for the 2024 Cleveland St. Patrick’s Day parade

CLEVELAND (WJW) — Cleveland’s beloved downtown St. Patrick’s Day parade is returning once again this Sunday.

The parade committee revealed the parade route is quite similar to year’s past, starting on Superior Avenue and East 18th street and going down Superior, rounding the corner at West Roadway and ending at the intersection of Rockwell Avenue and Ontario Street.

OVI patrol planned for St. Patrick’s Day

As it is a large, public event, with thousands of people planning to attent, the city is restricting parking and revelers are asked to consider taking RTA or using ride share services, especially if they plan on imbibing.

Parking restrictions start at 9 a.m. and include down Superior Avenue from East 24th Street to West 3rd Street. The parade route itself is closed down to traffic as well.

The parade kicks off just after 2 p.m. with the theme of “Ireland: One Island, one nation.”

Crowd comes out to watch St. Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin despite southbound I-680 closure

A large crowd of people came out to watch the Dublin Lions Club St. Patrick’s Day Parade Saturday morning.

“The whole sense of community,” said Dublin resident Joe Gutierrez. “We come and watch this every year and it’s good to see all these people.”

It was a weekend festival that was also the place to be at the Dublin Civic Center. This year, the city of Dublin is marking its 40th St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

Just beyond Dublin, this weekend southbound Interstate 680 is closed in Pleasanton between the 580/680 connector to highway 84 for some long-planned roadwork. Crews are repaving the road.

Dublin city leaders said planning for this year’s celebration included planning around the closure. They are confident it won’t affect the estimated 80 thousand visitors.

Freeways may be impacted but all access roads to Dublin will be open on I-580 and I-680. Northbound 680 is open along with all entrances to Dublin.

A variety of community and cultural groups working under an umbrella organization called the United Irish Societies of San Francisco are hosting UniteSF 2024, which includes the big 173rd annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which is followed by a celebration, on Saturday.

The parade starts at 11:30 a.m. at Second and Market streets, then travels down Market to Civic Center Plaza near City Hall, where the free party starts at 2 p.m.

The following streets will be closed to all traffic, including Muni vehicles, beginning at 10 a.m. and lasting until the end of the parade at approximately 3:30 p.m.:

Market between Sansome and 8th streets

2nd St. between Market and Harrison streets

Polk between McAllister to Grove

Grove between Larkin Street and Van Ness Avenue

All streets will reopen after the parade is cleared and streets are cleaned, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Additional information on street closures and SF Muni route impacts is available on the SFMTA website.

Along with Irish food, drink and dance, the festival will feature performances by The Hooks (from Sligo, the county town in Ireland); Glide Ensemble and Change Band (playing gospel); and Dublin Soul (a soul-Irish fusion group with Tony Lindsay of Santana, Omega Rae of Van Morrison’s band, traditional vocals by Amelia Hogan, and Ronan and Keith Mulligan from The Hooks, led by keyboardist Eamonn Flynn, who played on “The Commitments” soundtrack).

The planned entertainment also includes tributes to late Irish titans Sinead O’Connor and Shane MacGowan. Visit the UniteSF website for more details on the festivities.

DUI arrests on holidays: Where St. Patrick’s Day ranks

CLEVELAND (WJW) – The FOX 8 I-Team has uncovered a danger on your highways expected this weekend, and it happens on St. Patrick’s Day more than almost any other holiday.

We found St. Patrick’s Day is one of the biggest holidays of the year for drinking and driving. In fact, we found it almost at the top of the list.

So many of you go to a St. Patrick’s Day parade, but those events are just a piece of an all-day party.

We checked the number of people arrested by the Ohio State Highway Patrol for impaired driving on every major holiday. Records show, last year, St. Patrick’s Day had the second-highest number of cases.

Of course, we’ve shown you the impact of drunk drivers on your highways year-round. So, we took a closer look at this.

We reviewed impaired driving cases on holidays from Memorial Day, the night before Thanksgiving and Christmas week.

Last year, troopers arrested the most impaired drivers on New Year’s Eve, 89. Following that, we saw 78 arrested on St. Patrick’s Day and 74 on July 4.

We also checked back on what happened in 2022. That year, Saint Patrick’s Day ranked fourth in the number of these cases of any holiday. Then, last year, the number of people caught driving drunk or high on St. Patrick’s Day spiked up even more.

“What that means is we have to be out there, be visible on the roads and do the job we were hired to do,” said Sgt. Bridget Matt.

She said troopers plan extra patrols and operations targeting drunk drivers for St. Patrick’s Day.

“You know, Ed, the thing that surprises me the most is that, in this day and age, we still have people going out there and making the irresponsible decision to drink and drive,” Sgt. Matt said.

Remember, year-round, we see drunk drivers going the wrong way, crashing and terrorizing your highways.

Just this week, a drunk driver went to prison for leaving a local construction worker with permanent injuries.

The victim told a judge, “I haven’t been able to go back to work to do the job that I love to do because I can’t really walk.”

While the state patrol drunk driving arrest records shed new light on what’s happening on holidays, those numbers only reflect enforcement by troopers. The actual number of cases would be much higher adding in local police cases.

Adding Marijuana To Your St. Patrick’s Day

Green rivers, big parades and lots of drinks – St. Patrick’s Day definitely has strong traditions. It is a massive festival atmosphere. It is also the top beer-drinking holiday in a bar in the United States. Meaning more people drink beer in bars (as opposed to their homes) than on any other day of the year. But as cannabis become legal and people start consuming more and drinking less….what about adding marijuana to your St. Patrick’s Day? BDSA, a leading analytics firm which covers the cannabis industry, just released numbers and data revealing the cannabis industry earned $29.5 billion dollars in 2023. That is a lot of green and a ton of consumers!

For the holiday, green beer is a staple. There is no trick to making the iconic beverage. It is a light-colored beer with a drop of green food coloring added. No flavor change just the color. It is so popular, the University of Miami students added a new tradition of Green Beer Day when a change of schedule put St. Patrick’s Day in the middle of spring break…when the students are away from campus.

Marijuana is also becoming a recreational as well as a medical staple. California sober is now a national thing and beer sales have been hit by marijuana’s increase. You might want to put down the calorie filled pint and pick up a green gummy, a green apple vape or just some old fashioned flower. If you are out and about in a crowd for a parade or a pub crawl, the gummy or vape is the most discreet and most “public” friendly.

If you are going to mix weed and alcohol, there are few things to remember. Moderate your consumption and make sure you are paying attention. Using weed before drinking alcohol may minimize the effects of alcohol. Don’t get drawn into doing shots or Boilermakers. Both weed and alcohol are depressant drugs. Their effects suppress, impair and inhibit the brain’s ability to function. When alcohol and weed are mixed together, the effects of each individual substance become exaggerated. This can result in a person losing control of their actions .

And the Chicago green river thing? It goes back to 1962 when Mayor Richard J. Daley wanted to turn Lake Michigan green in honor of the holiday. He was persuaded to dye the more manageable Chicago River instead. The Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union have always been in and charge and use same green dye plumbers used to find sewage leaks.

Irish Toasted Special – Simply Scratch

An Irish Toasted Special calls for simple ingredients yet is incredibly delicious! In my version of this classic pub sandwich; fried ham, thinly sliced tomatoes, red onion and melty Irish cheddar is stacked between skillet-toasted bread. Yields 1 sandwich but can easily be doubled to serve more.

Last year I stumbled upon a video of a women making a toasted Irish special and couldn’t get it out of my mind. And even though the ingredients are pretty common, the sandwich as a whole is unbelievably delicious.

What Is A Toasted Special?

From a quick internet search, I found that a toasted special is essentially a toasted sandwich with ham, cheese, onion and tomato. And is served in just about every pub in Ireland.

Thinly slice onion and tomato, melty Irish cheddar and fried ham sandwiched between toasted bread – lunch doesn’t get much better than that.

To Make This Irish Toasted Special You will Need:
- ham – Use deli, baked or smoked.
- bread – I use white sandwich bread, however use what you like.
- butter – Adds delicious flavor.
- mayonnaise – Lends moisture and flavor.
- sliced tomato – Thinly sliced.
- Onion – Red, yellow or white onion will work.
One thing I like to do is fry the ham. Not sure how “traditional” this is but I love fried ham, bacon etc. Lightly spray a medium skillet with ghee oil or avocado oil spray and heat on medium. Once hot, cook the ham until golden in spots on both sides. Remove and wipe out the skillet with paper towel or kitchen towel.

While the ham is frying, grab 2 slices of bread. I’m using a white bread but honestly, use what you have – sourdough, whole grain etc. Spread one slice with 1-1/2 teaspoons salted butter.

Spread the other slice with about 2 teaspoons mayonnaise.

Top the buttered side with sliced tomato and season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Lastly top with Irish cheddar.

Top the mayo covered slice with the fried ham.

Then add the thinly sliced red onion and more sliced Irish cheddar.

Place in a lightly greased skillet over medium-low heat.

Cover and cook until the bread is golden brown underneath and the cheese has melted.

Once melted, put the two sandwich halves together.

I’m mean it doesn’t look like much. HOWEVER….

It’s so dang delicious.

I like to serve this with salt and pepper potatoes chips.

4 thin slices tomato

kosher salt

freshly ground black pepper

2 ounces Irish cheddar cheese, I use Kerrygold

2 teaspoons mayonnaise, or as desired

2 to 4 thin slices onion

Lightly spray a medium skillet with ghee oil or avocado oil spray and heat on medium. Once hot, cook the ham until golden in spots on both sides. Remove and wipe out the skillet with paper towel or kitchen towel.

Slice 2:

Spread a little mayo on the second slice and top with the fried ham, thinly sliced onions and the remaining Irish cheddar.

Lightly spray the medium skillet again with ghee oil or avocado oil spray (or use butter here) and heat on medium-low.

Place the sandwich halves in the skillet, cover and cook until the bread is golden brown underneath and the cheese has melted.

Put the two halves together, cut in half. and enjoy!

Things to do in the DC area: St. Patrick’s Day events, Shrek dance party … and more! – WTOP News

Celebrate the luck of the Irish in the coming days with this selection of St. Paddy’s Day celebrations, from parades to dance parties and beyond.

There’s so much to do in the D.C. area in the coming days, and WTOP has you covered with our weekly roundup of area events worth anticipating.

Celebrate the luck of the Irish in the coming days with this selection of St. Paddy’s Day celebrations, from parades to dance parties and beyond.

First up, NoMa’s outdoor beer garden, Wunder Garten, is hosting a full weekend of St. Patrick’s Day events. Starting on Friday, expect a dance party at Wunder Garten for lovers of the cult hit film, “Shrek.” Come dressed as your favorite character from the movie, and be prepared to groove. General admission is free. Ben McEvoy, events coordinator at Wunder Garten, told WTOP guests can expect specialty cocktails that reference the movies, a live DJ and a costume contest.

On Saturday, Wunder Garten is hosting live music from 2 p.m. through 6 p.m. with a DJ dance party at 8 p.m. Finally, expect more live music Sunday, plus March Madness showings. McEvoy said there will be green beers available as well as shot skis for Irish whiskeys and stein holding contests.

In Alexandria, Virginia, Murphy’s Grand Irish Pub is hosting live music all week long, as well as Irish dancers Sunday.

Elsewhere, the heart of historic Annapolis, Maryland, is hosting a St. Patrick’s Day celebration with a parade. For two days, the music and cultural festival, called Shamrock the Dock, will offer family-friendly fun with face painting, Irish dance lessons, games and music.

The annual free festival, Ireland at The Wharf, returns Saturday with a Guinness Beer Garden, Irish dancing, live music and more. Find more details on WTOP from Entertainment Reporter Jason Fraley.

On Saturday, the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Gaithersburg, Maryland, will kick off at 10 a.m. The parade is expected to include Celtic dancers, bagpipe bands and much, much more.

Join metrobar and MOVEMAKERS on Saturday for a day filled with wings, whiskey and music. The Wings & Whiskey Day Party includes food trucks, beer specials and games.

For Sunday, the Profs and Pints lecture series is hosting two St. Patrick’s Day-inspired lectures, one in Sterling, Virginia, on Ireland’s fight for freedom, and another in D.C. that’s an Ireland 101 presentation.

If you’re in search of a crawl, there are several to expect in the coming days, including the Leprechaun Bar Crawl and the Shamrock Crawl on Saturday, both in D.C. In Clarendon, Virginia, there is also a crawl Saturday.

DC

“Gaza Is Our Home”

On Friday, the Rhizome arts space in Takoma is hosting a screening and Q&A for the film, “Gaza Is Our Home.” The documentary is described as a “personal look into the lives of those that call Gaza home.” Tickets cost a suggested $5 to $20, or enter $0 to attend without donating.

“RBG Before She Was ‘Notorious’”

Profs and Pints is taking a look at the early Ruth Bader Ginsburg and how she got women into the U.S. Constitution. Philippa Strum, author and former director of U.S. Studies at the Woodrow Wilson Center, is presenting on the early career of the groundbreaking lawyer. The event is Tuesday at Penn Social. Tickets cost approximately $15.

Photography and DIY enthusiasts can come to Eaton House for a hands-on workshop to learn about building your very own photo zine. Don’t know what a zine is? WTOP has you covered. The Eaton D.C. event is for all skill levels on Wednesday. General admission is free.

Maryland

Mahalia
British singer-songwriter Mahalia is bringing her pop, soul and R&B music to The Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland, on Thursday. This concert is part of her IRL, or In Real Life, tour stemming from the release of her second studio album. Tickets start at approximately $35.

Our Community Stories Film Festival
From Friday through Sunday, this film festival celebrates local independent documentary filmmaking with screenings and filmmaker Q&A . Mostly gathered at Docs In Progress in Silver Spring, Maryland, this film festival features works like “Outside Line,” about a D.C. native who is one of NASCAR’s few Black drivers, and “Neighborhood Power,” about Adams Morgan neighbors’ fight against corporate displacement across generations.

New African Film Festival
The AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, is hosting the 20th edition of the New African Film Festival (NAFF). The NAFF will host three U.S. premieres with over 25 upcoming films featured from 16 countries.

Rhiannon Giddens
At the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland, the Grammy-nominated folk musician Rhiannon Giddens is performing from her third solo album, “You’re the One.” This album combines blues, jazz, Cajun, country gospel and rock. The performance is Monday with tickets that start at approximately $40.

Virginia

Arushi Mudgal
As one of the foremost talents in the field of the classical dance style of India, Odissi, performer Arushi Mudgal is bound for The Barns at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia, on Friday. Tickets start at around $30.

Egg Hunt
Celebrate Easter with this family-friendly egg hunt at Lost Boy Cider in Alexandria, Virginia. On Sunday, expect face painting, DIY crafts, goody bags and more. Preregistration is recommended for adults, and tickets are required for kids.

Sound Bath at Workhouse Arts Center
Members of the public are invited to be “immersed” in soft sound vibrations for 60 minutes in a sound bath hosted at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia. Chairs are provided, but guests are asked to bring a mat, blanket and pillow for comfort. The session costs $35.
