A 24-year-old woman is facing charges after police say she struck a Virginia State Police cruiser while attempting to drive away from troopers during a pursuit that crossed into Maryland.

After reportedly ramming the cruiser Monday night, Naturi Hayes, of Elkridge, crashed her vehicle in Howard County and tried to leave the scene on foot, according to Maryland State Police.

But she was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, attempting to elude uniformed police, failure to stop after an accident involving damage, aggressive and reckless driving, and other traffic-related charges.

The Virginia officer inside the cruiser was taken to the hospital and later released, according to Maryland police.

Hayes was also taken to the hospital before she was brought to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

Shortly before midnight Monday, Virginia State Police gave Maryland troopers a heads up that they were pursuing Hayes’ vehicle as it crossed the state border on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, according to the news release.

That’s when Hayes allegedly rammed a marked patrol vehicle, which forced it into a concrete barrier.

Police kept following Hayes’ vehicle, with the help of flight crews in a helicopter, through Prince George’s County and eventually Howard County. The vehicle pursuit came to a halt when Hayes crashed near Washington Boulevard and Meadowridge Road in Elkridge.

She tried to get away on foot but was arrested, Maryland police said.

During a preliminary hearing Wednesday, a judge ordered Hayes held without bond. According to online court records, she is expected to appear for a bond review hearing Friday.

  • Minneapolis man sentenced to decades in prison for deadly crime spree

    [ad_1]

A judge sentenced a Minneapolis man to decades in prison on Monday for killing a man and injuring another during a high-speed police chase in central Minnesota.

Ameer Matariyeh, 27, entered a Norgaard plea in August for second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. The Norgaard plea means Matariyeh admits to the crime and acknowledges he is not innocent, but does not remember the incident.

Charges of first-degree assault and fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle were dismissed at Matariyeh’s sentencing. His sentencing for the two guilty pleas was set at 306 months and 153 months, to be served consecutively.

Matariyeh is also charged with three counts of felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and one count of misdemeanor domestic assault in Hennepin County in connection with a domestic violence-related standoff that occurred in Minneapolis shortly before the chase.

Minneapolis police were first called to an apartment building off Lyndale Avenue South and West 29th Street around 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 22, 2024, on a report of domestic violence. As officers arrived, Matariyeh opened fire from his apartment balcony at his ex-girlfriend — who is the mother of his child — and her current boyfriend. Neither were hurt.

When police eventually made their way into Matariyeh’s apartment, no one was inside. Crisis negotiators then made contact with him via phone and discovered he was driving west of the Twin Cities.

Around 1:53 p.m., Kandiyohi County deputies learned of a stolen Chevy Malibu traveling west on Highway 7. A short time later, deputies were updated that the Chevy was at a home along the highway in the Lake Lillian area and the suspect, identified as Matariyeh, was on the front lawn of the property.

At 2:02 p.m., deputies received a 911 call from the residence saying a man had been shot in the chest. His wife, who was at home with him during the shooting, told police that her husband had been outside and she heard a pop. Charges say the husband then came back inside and told her to get his gun, as he had been shot.

Matariyeh then got back into the stolen vehicle and continued to drive west on Highway 7, reaching speeds up to 130 mph.

As deputies pursued Matariyeh, they were informed negotiators with the Minneapolis Police Department were on the phone with him and that Matariyeh said he was going to “attempt suicide by cop,” charges say.

Deputies contacted OnStar to remotely disable the vehicle around 2:25 p.m. Matariyeh then got out of the car and approached a small green pickup truck that was driving on the road. That’s when investigators say he shot and killed the driver, 55-year-old Jerome Skluzacek, of New London, Minnesota.

Charging documents say Matariyeh then ran across the highway into the median, came back toward the road and raised his hands over his head. Deputies gave him loud, verbal commands not to move, and he was taken into custody.

While in the back of the squad car, Matariyeh told officers that he was throwing his life away because he had been cheated on, documents say.

  • 2 killed after chase at 120 mph leads to crash in Wayne County

    [ad_1]

Two people died and two others were taken into custody late Sunday night after a Ford Mustang led state troopers on a chase that reached speeds of over 120 mph.

The troopers first spotted the car going 120 mph on U.S. Highway 70 in Wayne County just before 11:30 p.m. When they tried to pull it over, the vehicle did not stop.

In radio traffic from Broadcastify, troopers can be heard describing the moves the driver makes.

“They keep blacking out and turning some lights back on and turning lights back off again,” one trooper said.

Troopers said the driver lost control on Pinkney Road near Kenly and hit a tree.

Joshua Carter Jr., 18, and Braylen Newson, 16, died in the crash.

By 11:47 p.m., troopers reported they had two people conscious and two unconscious at the scene of the crash.

Carter and Newson were ejected from the car in the force of the collision. They were riding in the back seat of the car.

The driver, a 17-year-old, and a front-seat passenger, 16, were taken to UNC Wayne Hospital in Goldsboro with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver and front-seat passenger are expected to face criminal charges.

Troopers found alcohol, marijuana and two guns in the car.

When does NC State Highway Patrol decide to chase

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol allows troopers to chase a suspect based on their perceived level of threat to the public. Officers also consider the time of day, traffic congestion, weather conditions and roadway type. For instance, an officer would be more likely to chase on a fairly empty highway versus a road with several intersections.

The officer or supervisors have the authority to halt a chase if it becomes too risky, highlighting the delicate balance between enforcing the law and ensuring public safety.

  • 4 dead, 13 injured after Florida police chase ends with suspect crashing into popular LGBTQ bar

    [ad_1]

Four people were killed and 13 were injured after a police chase in Tampa, Florida, early Saturday ended with the suspect crashing into a popular LGBTQ bar, police said.

A video released by Tampa police Saturday afternoon showed a Florida Highway Patrol vehicle chasing the suspect vehicle at high speed on Interstate 275 around 12:40 a.m. Authorities said the Florida Highway Patrol started to pursue the driver, Silas Sampson, after law enforcement air patrol spotted the 22-year-old driving recklessly in the area.

Police said they attempted an “unsuccessful PIT maneuver, a technique used by law enforcement to force a fleeing vehicle to abruptly turn 180 degrees. The attempt can be seen in the helicopter footage released by Tampa police.

Sampson continued to drive at high speed before crashing into Bradley’s, a popular LGBTQ bar. A nearby surveillance camera also captured the moment of impact, the video showed.

A successful PIT will cause a vehicle to spin sideways and stop, ending the pursuit quickly, but the controversial maneuver can end in death or injury. The federal government released a 2023 report urging law enforcement to reduce police pursuits and consider other alternatives due to the high risk inherent in chases.

After their unsuccessful attempt, the Florida Highway Patrol ended the chase, the statement said. However, Sampson lost control of the vehicle and crashed into more than a dozen people who were standing outside.

“At this time, there is no evidence to indicate that Sampson’s actions were targeted toward any specific persons or businesses,” Tampa police said in a statement later Saturday.

Three victims died at the scene, while a fourth died at the hospital, police said. Two of the victims were in critical condition.

Tampa Pride posted condolences on social media, saying, “Bradley’s holds a special place in our LGBTQIA community and the heart of the Ybor Neighborhood.”

Sampson has been taken into custody, police said, and an investigation is ongoing. It’s unclear what charges he will face.

  • Four arrested in south Minneapolis after pursuit, sheriff’s office says

    [ad_1]

Authorities say four people were arrested Thursday afternoon following a pursuit in the Twin Cities.

According to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, detectives attempted to stop a Jeep reported stolen out of Maple Grove when the driver fled.

The vehicle was believed to be involved in multiple auto theft tampering and dangerous driving incidents earlier the same day. It had also been reported in at least one “gun pointing incident at people,” the sheriff’s office said.

Stop sticks were successfully deployed the disable the Jeep. Authorities say the driver stopped and began to flee on foot. A passenger then moved into the driver’s seat and struck the original driver before coming to a stop.

All occupants of the vehicle attempted to flee the scene. Four people were arrested and two were transported to the hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident prompted a large police presence in south Minneapolis near West 29th Street and Aldrich Avenue South.

  • SoCal deputy dies after being shot by gunman who led police on high-speed motorcycle chase

    [ad_1]

UPLAND, Calif. — A wild motorcycle chase ended in a violent crash on a Southern California freeway on Monday afternoon after the suspect tried to flee at extraordinary speeds following a sheriff’s deputy’s shooting death.

Warning: Some viewers may find the video above disturbing or difficult to watch

It all started when San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies reportedly responded to the area for a domestic violence call about an armed man threatening a woman in Rancho Cucamonga.

The deputies were fired upon as soon as they arrived at the scene, the sheriff’s department said. Deputy Andrew Nunez suffered a single gunshot wound to the head.

Nunez was rushed to the hospital and ultimately pronounced dead, the sheriff’s department confirmed.

The suspect then hopped on a motorcycle and a high-speed police chase ensued on the 210 Freeway.

After the suspect opened fire, he hopped on a motorcycle, sparking a high-speed chase that ended in a major crash on the 210 Freeway, officials confirmed.

All eastbound lanes were shut down and a SigAlert was issued between Mountain and Campus avenues.

AIR7 video from our sister station, ABC7 Eyewitness News in Los Angeles, showed traffic backed up for miles as the traffic was at a standstill during peak rush hour traffic at 3 p.m. local time.

A wild motorcycle chase ended in a violent crash on the 210 Freeway in Ontario Monday afternoon.

Traffic was being diverted off of Mountain Avenue. There is major police presence at the scene as the investigation is underway.

The suspect appeared to pull out a gun and waved it as he was driving down the freeway at high speeds of 150 mph.

The chase ended in Upland after an off-duty sheriff’s deputy conducted a “legal intervention” and hit the suspect’s motorcycle.

Investigators were seen inspecting what appeared to be a gun on the 210 Freeway after the dramatic collision.

Investigators inspect what appears to be a gun on the 210 Freeway in Ontario, where a chase ended in a violent crash on Monday, Oct. 27, 2025.

During an afternoon press conference, Sheriff Shannon Dicus confirmed that an off-duty sheriff’s deputy conducted a “legal intervention” by striking the suspect on the motorcycle.

That’s when the suspect was launched into the air and landed on the road.

Officers quickly ran out of their patrol cars and rushed to handcuff him.

The suspect was sitting up and conscious as authorities rendered aid. He was airlifted to an area hospital in stable condition.

Authorities are working to forensically positively identify the suspect and are waiting to interview him.

The suspect’s name was not immediately released.

Video from the hospital Nunez was taken to shows law enforcement officers gathered outside the emergency room. An Eyewitness News crew at the scene also spotted what appeared to be family members arriving at the hospital.

Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Nunez leaves behind a wife, a 2-year-old daughter, a mother and four brothers and sisters. His wife was also expecting, the sheriff said.

Dicus said Nunez had been with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department for six years and served the Rancho Cucamonga community for five years. He described Nunez as a “wonderful father” and “wonderful deputy sheriff.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement on the death of Deputy Nunez.

“On behalf of all Californians, Jennifer and I extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Nunez. His courage, compassion and dedication to protecting others reflect the finest traditions of law enforcement. We honor his life and service with gratitude; may his sacrifice never be forgotten.”

Newsom’s office said flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.

  • Knightdale chase a reminder of danger of pursuits for drivers, law enforcement

    [ad_1]

High-speed chases are dangerous for the agencies that pursue suspects and the drivers in their path.

Those in harm’s way during a chase-and-crash in Knightdale on Wednesday know that feeling.

Debra Stubblefield was driving the sedan that the driver crashed into at the intersection of Knightdale Boulevard and Hinton Oaks Boulevard. She was not injured in the crash.

“All of a sudden, this car came out of nowhere and hit
us,” said Stubblefield, who was not hurt. “It spun me up on the curb,
and then I saw him go across and spin around. Next thing I knew, cops were
    chasing him.”

Mingo was said to be driving at speeds of over 100 mph at
times while on Interstate 87. The chase started on Spectrum Drive, got onto the interstate, then through the heart of Knightdale on Business 64. Sky 5 was first on scene, covering the bulk of the roughly 10-minute pursuit.

“I was just scared,” said Teresa Croom, who lives nearby. “I didn’t know what was going on.”

Christian Rojas, who says he comes to Widewaters Commons shopping center often, said he had no idea about the chase and crash, but was shocked to see video of the collision.

A 2021 5 On Your Side report showed that 13 civilians died as a result of pursuits by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol over a three-year period.

“It’s more dangerous than anything,” Rojas said. “You are trying to follow somebody, but at the same time, you don’t know what could happen with anybody else.”

WRAL News was first on the scene when Sky 5 captured the moment Anthony Mingo jumped out of his SUV on Knightdale Boulevard and ran into a restaurant in a shopping center.

    Why chase?

Tony Godwin with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office explained the agency’s policies on pursuits and the on-the-fly thinking they have to execute before starting a chase.

“The policy allows for pursuits,” said Godwin. “It’s a multi-prong decision,” he said.

Godwin said deputies consider the severity of the suspected crime,
weather and traffic conditions, time of day and familiarity with the area.

Godwin says they were keeping an eye out for Mingo’s vehicle on Wednesday.

He said Raleigh police had provided his description because they believed he robbed a PNC Bank on Falls of Neuse Road. Mingo faces a robbery charge for that incident.

“There was a concern, if we don’t get him into custody, there was
the potential for additional violent crimes out in the community,” he said.

After a chase, Godwin said the office analyzes it to
determine if appropriate action was taken and whether it can be improved in the
    future.

    More charges expected

After the crash on Wednesday, deputies said Mingo harmed himself, but would not elaborate.

As of Thursday afternoon, Mingo is in the hospital in critical condition. Godwin said the sheriff’s office is waiting for Mingo to recover a bit before officially pressing charges.

“Obviously, we know what he’s going to be charged with, but we just got to wait until he’s in a proper condition to do that,” Godwin explained.

Because Mingo crashed into multiple cars during the pursuit, Godwin said city police departments can press their own charges.

Knightdale Police Chief Lawrence Capps confirmed with WRAL that his department plans to bring reckless driving and hit-and-run charges against Mingo.

A deputy who responded had minor injuries.

The chase went down Highway 64 Business in Knightdale at one point and appeared to be driving through Knightdale. The driver of the SUV eventually crashed into another driver turning onto Knightdale Boulevard at Hinton Oaks Boulevard.

Around 1:43 p.m., the driver got out of the car near Widewaters Commons shopping center and went into a restaurant, 101 Kitchen. Officials reported that a 17-year-old was taken into custody just before 4 p.m., and a second person was apprehended more than an hour later.

The incident caused temporary disruptions in the area, but the situation has been resolved with both suspects in custody.

  • Carjacking suspect pursued by Minneapolis officers kills 2 women, injures child in crash, police say

    [ad_1]

Two women are dead and a child is injured after a carjacking suspect fleeing police crashed into a vehicle at a busy north Minneapolis intersection on Thursday morning, according to police.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said in a news conference his department was alerted to reports of a person with a gun on East Lake Street and Fourth Avenue South just after 8 a.m., which was soon updated to a carjacking in progress.

Witnesses said a man driving in a maroon Ford Explorer was traveling in a “flagrantly reckless manner,” speeding and swerving into oncoming traffic, and even driving on sidewalks on Lake Street, O’Hara said.

The suspect then crashed, pulled out a gun and tried to carjack a motorist at a red light. That motorist was able to drive away, but the suspect then “violently carjacked” a woman in a black Volkswagen at gunpoint.

O’Hara said the suspect sped off, but then circled back to “retrieve three dogs from the Explorer.” After getting the dogs, the suspect drove off while firing gunshots.

At about 8:19 a.m., O’Hara said the suspect was seen driving recklessly downtown, and then was spotted driving in north Minneapolis at 8:36 a.m. Officers initiated a pursuit, which “ended tragically three minutes later when the suspect crashed into an innocent vehicle” on Highway 55 near Penn Avenue North, the chief said — stressing that no squad cars were involved in the collision, and the squad pursuing the suspect was “fully-marked.”

The two women inside the other vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, while a 6-year-old passenger with them suffered survivable injuries, according to O’Hara. The women were identified late Thursday as Marisa Ardys Casebolt and Liberty Borg. Both were 25 years old.

The suspect, a 45-year-old man from St. Paul, was arrested at the crash scene and transported to North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale, where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

O’Hara said a gun was recovered from the suspect’s stolen car. Two of the dogs inside were hurt in the crash, but the third was eventually euthanized due to its injuries.

“This is an outcome that we never want, as two innocent lives have been taken from us because of one person’s violent and reckless behavior,” O’Hara said during the news conference. “This is exactly why we take carjackings and gun crime so seriously, because they put every member of our community at risk.”

When questioned about his department’s pursuit policy, O’Hara described their rules as “stringent.”

“We’ve been criticized recently — because of all the smash-and-grabs and stolen cars that have affected literally hundreds of residents — for having a pursuit policy that does not allow pursuits in those cases,” he said. “We have to balance the need to apprehend, you know, in this case a dangerous and violent gunman, with the risk that these pursuits pose to the public. So we limit our pursuits only to those cases where we believe an immediate apprehension is necessary to protect the community from a violent criminal.”

O’Hara said his department is leading the Lake Street carjacking investigation, while the Minnesota State Patrol is leading the crash investigation.

The interim executive director of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, David Titus, called for tougher penalties for violent offenders in response to the fatal crash.

“Two innocent women are dead and a child is injured solely because of the reckless, violent actions of a criminal who carjacked at gunpoint with shots fired – and then fled police through Minneapolis rush-hour traffic. Enough is enough,” Titus said in a statement.

  • Man steals car with three children inside, crashes in Malibu after pursuit, authorities say

    [ad_1]

A man was arrested after stealing a car in East Los Angeles with three children inside, then crashing it in Malibu during a police pursuit Friday evening, officials confirmed.

The car, a light-colored sedan, was left running with three children inside at a 7-Eleven on East Olympic Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A stranger jumped inside the idling vehicle and took off at around 6:38 p.m.

The California Highway Patrol began pursuing the vehicle minutes later, traveling westbound on the 10 Freeway at Maple Avenue in Los Angeles, the agency confirmed.

The chase continued until roughly 7:34 p.m., when the sedan appeared to T-bone a light-colored SUV at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Kanan Dume Road in Malibu.

Following the crash, live footage broadcast from a news helicopter showed the suspect fleeing the scene barefoot and shedding layers of clothes. The man ran through a residential area into a field before being arrested.

Four people at the scene were taken to a hospital — three by helicopter and one by ambulance, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Three were listed with minor-to-moderate injuries, but no condition was available for the fourth person.

It is unclear how seriously injured the children were, but they were conscious and breathing after the crash as paramedics removed them from the vehicle, KTLA-TV reported.

The suspect’s name was not immediately released.
