Trump hasn’t typically delivered year-end speeches
A year-end address is unusual for Mr. Trump, who did not deliver an annual year-end speech during his first term in office.
The president’s last national address was aired by the White House on Nov. 26, after two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot in Washington, D.C., not far from the White House. Mr. Trump was in Florida at the time.
Polling on Trump and the economy
Throughout 2025, about three-quarters of Americans said their incomes were not keeping pace with inflation, according to a CBS News poll released today, and views of the overall economy remain low, with 32% saying that the condition of the economy is good.
On personal finances, about half of the country continues to say their financial situation is good, while about half say it is bad, which has been the case throughout the year.
Overall, for those whose financial situation changed over the year, more said it got worse rather than better. But those who did feel their situation improved were also more likely to be those with higher incomes.
The public’s evaluations of the U.S. job market specifically remain net negative. This comes as the latest government data shows somewhat of a mixed bag: more jobs were added in November than economists expected, but the unemployment rate ticked up to its highest level since September 2021.
Among the bright spots, on balance, more Americans rate the condition of the stock market as good than rate it as bad, and that’s particularly so among those for whom the market’s performance matters a lot to their finances.
More Americans now say the price of gas in their area is coming down than say it’s going up — a reversal from what we saw this fall and over the year.
Nick Reiner will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances for the killings of his parents, Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, who were found dead in their home over the weekend, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced Tuesday.
“Their loss is beyond tragic and we will commit ourselves to bringing their murderer to justice,” Hochman said at a news conference alongside Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell. He added that this type of case is “the most serious charge the DA’s office can bring against anyone.”
The district attorney said Nick Reiner is facing a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole or potentially the death penalty, but said his office hasn’t decided whether to seek it.
Nick Reiner was arrested on Sunday and is being held without bond. Two sources familiar with the incident told CBS News the couple were found with multiple stab wounds. Hochman confirmed a knife was used in the killings.
An attorney for Nick Reiner said his client would not be in court Tuesday due to medical reasons, The Associated Press reported. Greg Risling, a spokesperson for the district attorney’s office, also told CBS News Los Angeles that his “understanding” is that Nick Reiner “is a medical miss out today.”
So far police have not released details about a possible motive or what led them to arrest Nick Reiner.
The Reiners attended a party the night before the killings at Conan O’Brien’s, where Rob and Nick Reiner had a brief but loud argument, sources who were at the party told CBS News.
On the day the couple was found dead, they had plans with their longtime friends Michelle Obama and former President Barack Obama, according to the former first lady.
“We were supposed to be seeing them that night, last night, and we got the news,” said Michelle Obama during an interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Monday night.
Hurricane Milton, one of the biggest storms in recorded history, is set to make landfall in Florida on October 9. It will likely cause tens of billions of dollars of damage and could kill or injure many people who are unable to evacuate Tampa Bay and the surrounding region in time.
Iconic Director And Proud Nerd Kevin Smith On Sneaking Into Movies, Mallrats, And More
And yet, some influencers, TikTok content creators, and streamers are claiming that they will stick around and livestream through the historic storm. It’s a horrible idea and yet another example of how some creators are willing to do anything just to get more views, clicks, and subscribers.
On Tuesday, Forbes reported on numerous influencers who suggested in videos posted online that they would be sticking around even as Hurricane Milton makes its way closer and closer to Florida.
Influencer and writer Caroline Calloway posted on Twitter that even though her house is located in the evacuation zone and is on the beach, she won’t be leaving. Instead, she tweeted about how she’s not leaving and included an ad for her upcoming advice book. “I have champagne and four generations of Floridians in my veins. It’ll be fine,” tweeted Calloway.
Another TikTok creator, kricketfelt, has been posting videos about how her home is made out of concrete and she and her husband are going to stay and not evacuate. She’s continued to upload videos, making light of the situation, as the storm gets closer.
Meanwhile, a clip of controversial Kick Streamer Adin Ross supposedly offering people $30,000 to stick around and livestream through the hurricane went viral after being shared on Twitter and TikTok. However, during the full seven-hour livestream, it’s clear Ross isn’t offering this money to anyone and in fact, was just joking around with a friend. During that same stream, he also told viewers to evacuate Tampa Bay and suggested the hurricane was being used to “distract” people from the upcoming election. So a mixed bag.
Kotaku has reached out to Adin Ross for comment about his stream and statements.
Even though the offer wasn’t real, that didn’t stop some streamers from claiming that they were streaming live from Florida in the path of the hurricane. One Kick streamer, MikeSmallsJr, claimed to be streaming from Florida with nothing but an air mattress and some snacks. During one moment of his stream, he admitted that Ross’ offer wasn’t real and was taken out of context, but suggested the streamer still should pay him something for what he was doing.
“At the end of the day, I was the first Kick streamer to do this shit during Hurricane Helene. I’m out here busting my ass to entertain the people,” said MikeSmallsJr. Later he reportedly heard he wasn’t getting anything and wasn’t happy.
Another streamer, JamesWorley, claimed to be streaming during the storm and, when asked what he would do when or if he lost cell service, said: “I guess the stream will end.” A few moments later, his stream cut off. It returned a minute later.
Kotaku wasn’t able to verify their locations, but some did at least seem to be in Florida and were streaming during large amounts of rain. The storm isn’t set to make landfall until 8 p.m. EST, though thunderstorms and tornadoes are already covering much of the Sunshine State.
The reality is that even though Adin Ross didn’t actually offer large sums of money to encourage people to stream through the storm, the comments sadly might have inspired some people to stick around even as a deadly, incredibly powerful hurricane is about to hit where they live.
For some content creators, a massive hurricane is just an opportunity to risk their lives, troll their viewers, or create “edgy” content while possibly earning more views and subscribers. All of this in an effort to conquer the algorithm and rise above the thousands and thousands of other creators out there, all trying to desperately make money on social media and streaming platforms that, more and more, feel like sinking ships and not the future of entertainment.

The launch of Venu Sports will be delayed after a federal judge granted FuboTV’s motion for a preliminary injunction against the planned sports streaming venture by ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery.
U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Garnett in the Southern District of New York said in her 69-page ruling that Fubo was likely to be successful in proving that the joint venture would violate antitrust laws, and Fubo and consumers would “face irreparable harm in the absence of an injunction.”
ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery said they would appeal the ruling.
FuboTV filed the lawsuit two weeks after ESPN, Fox, Warner Bros. Discovery and Hulu announced their plan to offer a sports streaming service on Feb. 6.
FuboTV said in its filing that it has tried for years to offer a sports-only streaming service but has been prevented from doing so because of ESPN. Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery have imposed bundling requirements on FuboTV which it says forces “Fubo to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to license and broadcast content that its customers do not want or need.”
“Today’s ruling is a victory not only for Fubo but also for consumers. This decision will help ensure that consumers have access to a more competitive marketplace with multiple sports streaming options,” Fubo co-founder and CEO David Gandler said in a statement. “But our fight continues. Fubo has said all along that we seek equal treatment from these media giants, and a level playing field in our industry.”
“A fair and competitive marketplace is necessary to provide consumers with multiple, robust and more affordable sports streaming options,” Gandler continued. “We will continue to fight for fairness and for what’s best for consumers.”
Venu Sports announced on Aug. 1 it would be available for $42.99 per month with its planned launch in the fall.
The platform would include offerings from 14 linear networks — ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network, ACC Network, ESPNEWS, ABC, FOX, FS1, FS2, Big Ten Network, TNT, TBS, truTV — as well as ESPN+.
Subscribers would have the ability to bundle the product with Disney+, Hulu and/or Max.
ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery said in a joint statement: “We believe that Fubo’s arguments are wrong on the facts and the law, and that Fubo has failed to prove it is legally entitled to a preliminary injunction. Venu Sports is a pro-competitive option that aims to enhance consumer choice by reaching a segment of viewers who currently are not served by existing subscription options.”
ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery will each share one-third ownership in the joint venture.
The ruling also drew reaction from cable and satellite companies, who are watching with interest due to their bundling requirements and what companies generally charge in subscriber fees.
In a statement provided to CBS News Friday evening, a spokesperson for DirectTV said, “We are pleased with the court decision and believe that it appropriately recognizes the potential harms of allowing major programmers to license their content to an affiliated distributor on more favorable terms than they license their content to third parties.”
Washington — Vice President Kamala Harris and her new running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz made their debut as the Democratic ticket at a packed campaign rally in Philadelphia Tuesday evening.
The rally was also Harris’ first appearance since the Democratic Party finalized its virtual roll call results, cementing her as its nominee. She revealed Walz as her VP choice Tuesday morning.
“I stand before you today to proudly announce I am now officially the Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” Harris said, standing alongside Walz. “And so now, we have some work to do. We have to move to the general election and win that.”

She quickly moved on to introduce her running mate, saying she sought a partner “who can help build this brighter future, a leader who will help unite our nation and move us forward, a fighter for the middle class, a patriot who believes, as I do, in the extraordinary promise of America, a promise of freedom, opportunity and justice, not just for some, but for all.”
“So, Pennsylvania, I’m here today because I found such a leader: Governor Tim Walz of the great state of Minnesota,” she announced, to enthusiastic applause and chants of “Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim!”
She praised his record as governor, as a defender of abortion rights and voting rights and noted that he signed “the most significant expansion of voting rights in Minnesota in over 50 years.” She promised that together they’d pursue national legislation on both those fronts.
Harris also said Walz, with his experience as an executive, “will be ready on Day One.” That line is what President Biden said about Harris when they were running together in 2020.
Harris contrasted her background as a girl from Oakland, California, with Walz as a boy who grew up on the plains of Nebraska.
“It’s the promise of America, because only in America, only in America, is it possible for them together to make it all the way to the White House,” she said.
As Walz took the stage, he said, “I’m thrilled to be on this journey with you,” and he told the crowd, “Pennsylvania, I know you know this, but my God, what a treasure you have in Josh Shapiro,” who was a top contender for the VP spot and introduced Harris at the rally. Shapiro said earlier at the rally, “I love being your governor,” and he vowed to work hard to elect Harris and Walz.
Walz, in his maiden remarks as Harris’ running mate, praised the vice president, and while he noted the prosecutor’s role that she and the campaign have been emphasizing, he broadened that view of her, saying, “She took on the predators, she took on the fraudsters, she took down the transnational gangs. She stood up against powerful corporate interests, and she never hesitated to reach across the aisle if it meant improving people’s lives. And I want all of you to hold this and don’t ever underestimate the power of this: She does it all with a sense of joy.”
Walz leaned into his Midwestern roots, telling the story of his childhood, his military service and the 20 years he spent as a high school social studies teacher. Walz said his former students encouraged him to first run for office, and he ran for Congress in 2006.
“I learned the art of compromise without compromising my values,” Walz said of his time as a congressman. “And now as governor of the great state of Minnesota, I bring those experiences to bear in tackling the challenges that are facing our great state.”
Walz also took on GOP presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump, saying that he “sees the world a little differently than us.”
Walz tore into Trump, saying the former president doesn’t know the first thing about service because he’s “too busy serving himself.” Walz said Trump weakens the economy to “strengthen his own hand.” He also said crime went up during Trump’s time in office, and “that’s not even counting the crimes he committed,” Walz quipped. The Trump campaign has blasted Walz over crime in Minnesota.
The governor said he “can’t wait to debate” GOP vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance, “that is, if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up,” Walz said.
With 19 electoral votes, Pennsylvania has the largest allocation among battleground states and a win in the state is likely to be pivotal to winning the White House in November. In 2016, former President Donald Trump unexpectedly won the state, which had voted for the Democratic presidential candidate since 1992. President Biden took it back in 2020.
Harris and Trump are tied at 50% among likely voters in Pennsylvania, according to the latest CBS News poll. The poll, which found Harris has a 1-point edge nationally, also shows the vice president and Trump in an even race in the other six battleground states.
Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, also made a campaign stop in Philadelphia earlier Tuesday. He plans to travel to other battleground states later this week, as well.
Kamala Harris’ upcoming planned rally schedule
The Philadelphia rally kicked off Harris and Walz’s cross-country tour in seven battleground states this week. The two will be campaigning in the following cities:
Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on Wednesday
Detroit, Michigan, on Thursday
Phoenix, Arizona, on Friday
Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday.
Harris had also scheduled campaign stops in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Thursday and Savannah, Georgia, on Friday, but the events were postponed due to Tropical Storm Debby, which is forecasted to bring historic rainfall and flooding to southeastern states this week.
A federal judge has overturned a jury’s $4.7 billion verdict in the class-action lawsuit filed by “Sunday Ticket” subscribers against the NFL and has granted judgment to the NFL.
U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez ruled Thursday that the testimony of two witnesses for the subscribers had flawed methodologies and should have been excluded.
“Without the testimonies of Dr. (Daniel) Rascher and Dr. (John) Zona, no reasonable jury could have found class-wide injury or damages,” Gutierrez wrote at the end of his 16-page ruling.
The jury on June 27 awarded $4.7 billion in damages to residential and commercial subscribers after it ruled the NFL violated antitrust laws in distributing out-of-market Sunday afternoon games on a premium subscription service.
The lawsuit covered 2.4 million residential subscribers and 48,000 businesses in the United States who paid for the package on DirecTV of out-of-market games from the 2011 through 2022 seasons.
“We are grateful for today’s ruling in the Sunday Ticket class action lawsuit,” the NFL said in a statement provided to CBS News. “We believe that the NFL’s media distribution model provides our fans with an array of options to follow the game they love, including local broadcasts of every single game on free over-the-air television. We thank Judge Gutierrez for his time and attention to this case and look forward to an exciting 2024 NFL season.”

The jury of five men and three women found the NFL liable for $4,610,331,671.74 in damages to the residential class, home subscribers, and $96,928,272.90 in damages to the commercial class, business subscribers.
Since damages can be tripled under federal antitrust laws, the NFL could have been liable for $14,121,779,833.92.
It is not the first time the NFL has won a judgment as matter of law in this case, which has been going on since 2015.
In 2017, U.S. District Judge Beverly Reid O’Connell dismissed the lawsuit and ruled for the NFL because she said “Sunday Ticket” did not reduce output of NFL games and that even though DirecTV might have charged inflated prices, that did not “on its own, constitute harm to competition” because it had to negotiate with the NFL to carry the package.
Two years later, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated the case.
It is likely the plaintiffs will again appeal to the 9th Circuit.

President Joe Biden honored U.S. troops who sacrificed their lives for the country Monday, visiting Arlington National Cemetery to to lay a wreath and deliver his annual Memorial Day address.
Mr. Biden praised the fallen as having been “bound by a common commitment not to a place, not to a person, not to a president, but to an idea…the idea of the United States of America.” It echoed the president’s commencement speech at West Point, when he told graduating cadets that they were the guardians of democracy, and they had taken “an oath — not to a political party, not to a president, but to the Constitution of the United States of America — against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

Each Memorial Day brings memories of Mr. Biden’s son, Beau Biden, who served in Iraq for the Delaware Air National Guard died in 2015 of brain cancer.
“This week marks nine years since I lost my son Beau. Our losses are not the same,” the president said. “He didn’t perish in the battlefield. He was a cancer victim from a consequence of being in the Army in Iraq for a year next to a burn pit.” The president went on to tout the progress made by the PACT Act to help veterans who were exposed to toxic materials during their service. He also noted that since he took office, he has signed more than 30 bipartisan bills to help veterans.
Earlier, Mr. Biden hosted a Memorial Day breakfast for veterans at the White House.
On Friday, Mr. Biden issued a proclamation to recommit to honoring the memories of the fallen “by carrying on their work to forge a more perfect Union.”
“We are the only Nation in the world founded on the idea that we are all created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our entire lives,” the president’s proclamation reads. “Generations of America’s beloved daughters and sons have dared all, risked all, and given all for this idea. Today, as they lie in eternal peace, we continue to live by the light of liberty they kept burning bright.”
