ENGLEWOOD, Fla. — The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is attempting to identify the person who stole a Captain Morgan statue from Beach Discount Liquors on S. McCall Road in Englewood.
Surveillance video captured the moment when the thief put the pirate statue in the back of a blue two-door pickup truck.
The video showed that the statue was stolen on May 19. In the video you can see the person had a dog in the front seat as their partner in crime.
Ankit Patel is an employee at the liquor store. He said the statue is about six feet tall and said it sells for about $2,500 to $3,000 online.
Patel said the figurine was sitting outside while the store finished renovations.
Patel said customers frequently asked if the statue was for sale.
“So many customers asking for it, do you want to sell it…and stuff like that, but after a couple of weeks someone came at night and steal it,” Patel said.
Patel said he doesn’t think a customer would steal the statue.
“Our customers are nice, they are not gonna do that but like I don’t know…maybe a stranger,” he said.
Customers who frequently visit the liquor store are optimistic that the statue will be returned and hope the thief is arrested.
“This owner is a good friend of mine and they’re good people here so that’s a shame. We will run into him (the statue) sooner or later, he’ll probably be standing in someone’s backyard,” Lee Jencks said.
Barb Baronaitis has been a customer at the store for 10 years.
“This is my store It was huge, I don’t know how anyone could’ve stolen it,” Baronaitis said. “It’s a shame…I don’t know how much that would’ve cost this establishment but I’m sure they were very proud of having that and it earmarked the place.”
