Crash on I-90 snarls traffic, causes fuel spill

CLEVELAND (WJW) — A crash that caused a diesel spill closed a portion of Interstate 90 East for hours on Wednesday, not long before the Cleveland Guardians’ playoff game at Progressive Field.

Cleveland Division of Fire announced just after 10:30 a.m. that the highway was closed at the Carnegie Avenue exit for a vehicle accident involving a diesel spill. I-90 East is open after Superior Avenue, according to firefighters.

Cleveland police in a social media post reported one minor injury related to the crash, which involved two vehicles, including a semi-truck.

Motorists on that portion of I-90 were told to expect an about 40-minute delay, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. Motorists in the area just before 11 a.m. were seen being directed off the highway via the exit.

About 20 minutes later, the right two lanes had been reopened, according to ODOT.

As of 12:50 p.m., the left two lanes remained blocked and ODOT clocked the travel delay at 10 minutes.

All lanes were also blocked on Interstate 77 North at East 22nd Street/East 14th Street, according to ODOT, though it was unclear if that was due to a separate crash.

Traffic was flowing normally again just after 1 p.m.

Fans heading to Progressive Field to watch the Guardians take on the Detroit Tigers in Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series, starting at 1:08 p.m. were able to find numerous other routes to the ballpark on the MLB website.
