Auggie’s story starts at the end of a rope. For being an “outside dog,” he didn’t know much of the world past the Oklahoma driveway where he was tethered to a pole day in and day out. He was neglected in every sense of the word. One day, out of desperate hunger, Auggie chewed through his rope and ran to find help.

Auggie found his way to a neighbor’s house, and as soon as they laid eyes on him, they were horrified by the condition he was in. The poor pup was skin and bones, his ribs sticking out so far that you could count every single one. When they learned that Auggie’s mother was still in the driveway, tied to the same carport in the same condition, they called the authorities for help freeing the two dogs. Brave little Auggie saved himself and his mom that day.

Oklahoma authorities contacted Route 66 Pet Rescue, and when rescuers saw the state of the pup who lived his life in a driveway, they knew they had to help.

“Once we saw poor Auggie’s condition we knew we couldn’t leave him there.”

Though no longer living a rough life outdoors, the transition to the rescue was hard on Auggie. He suffered a bout of depression soon after his arrival and shut down. Rescuers worried for his wellbeing, and did what they could to cheer him up. They introduced him to a fluffy Great Pyrenees mix named Lacey, who was able to lift his spirits and bring him back to himself. Since then, the two have been inseparable, and Auggie has shown himself to be a lively, happy, playful boy.

Route 66 Pet Rescue has given Auggie all the love and care – and food – that he had been missing out on! Thanks to contributions of food and supplies from Greater Good Charities’ GOODS Program, Route 66 could feed Auggie a diet that would support healthy weight gain.

No longer on a rope, Auggie was able to live the life of a free, happy pup, playing with his shelter mates and soaking up all the attention staff has to give!

“Auggie is fat and happy. He has become a bonded pair with Lacey and he never has to worry his next meal is coming from.”

Today, Auggie is still in the care of Route 66 Pet Rescue, waiting patiently for his forever home with his bonded best buddy, Lacey. Route 66 is dedicated to finding them a home where they can live happily ever after together.

Auggie’s story is just one of many happening all over the country, and Greater Good Charities’ GOODS Program trying to help rescues like Route 66 Pet Rescue give every single one a happy ending – and you can help.
