What happens the weekend before one of the biggest releases of the year opens? Nothing that’s what!
This weekends box office is set to up the the 2nd lowest of the year in total gross.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stayed on top for the fifth weekend in a row with $11.1 million. Its domestic total has now passed the $400 million mark with $409.8 million. Its the 3rd film this year to pass the $400 million mark domestically and is also the 3rd film this year to pass the $1 billion mark worldwide.
Violent Night ($8.7 million), Strange World ($3.6 million), The Menu ($2.7 million), and Devotion ($2 million) rounded out the Top 5.
Meanwhile, the big champ of the weekend was The Whale, taking $360,000 from 6 theaters for a $60,000 per-theater-average. Its the highest pts for a film for the year, nabbing $10k more than previous champ EEAAO and is the 2nd highest over the past three years.
Sam Mendes’ Empire of Light opened in 110 theaters and had a poor $160,000 opening.
