trigger warning: Larry Nassar is human garbage
Later that day, McMillan attacked Nassar in his cell, stabbing him twice in the neck, twice in the back, and six times in the chest before four other inmates pulled him off Nassar. Correctional officers performed life saving measures before Nassar was taken to a Florida hospital where he is now in stable condition with a collapsed lung.
Of note: in December 2021 when USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee finally settled a lawsuit with Nassar’s victims for $380 million (far less than the 2018 lawsuit settled by Michigan State and Nassar’s 332 MSU victims for $500 million), it was confirmed that he had abused over 500 athletes. His youngest victim was six years old. During his Ingham County trial, he admitted to abusing seven girls, three of whom were under the age of thirteen. The previous settlement offer from USAG & USOPC in 2020 was for $215 million and one of the terms was that there would be no further investigation into their cover up of Nassar’s abuse. The proposed settlement also released all USAG officials from any liability and did not include guidelines for naming who at USAG knew about Nassar’s abuse.
Nassar’s assailant, Shane McMillan, was originally sentenced to more than 20 years in federal prison after pleading guilty in Wyoming to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in 2002. His expected release date was 2024. However, in 2006, a correctional officer in Louisiana approached him in the rec yard to investigate him for a prior inmate assault, and McMillan punched him, knocking him to the ground and causing cuts and bruises to the officer’s face. As a result, McMillan was sentenced to an additional five years. In 2011, McMillan and another inmate stabbed a prisoner 66 times in Colorado. They were each charged with attempted murder and sentenced to an additional 20 years.
