Update Feb 1: A new Behind the Sims Summit stream has confirmed that “The Sims 5” will have multiplayer, but also a robust single-player experience.
Game director Grant Rodiek explained the combo like this: “Project Rene is not an MMO. It is not this public, shared space where everything you do is always with other people. You could play on your own, on your terms, and then again, when you want on your terms, you can invite others to come and play with you. That’s the structure that we’re pursuing, and we think that’s really cool and perfect for The Sims.”
Sims tragics, rejoice! Eight years after “The Sims 4” was released, “The Sims 5” has finally been announced. The bad news is that it’s still a “few years” off, but the good news is that it’ll have collaborative play. Finally, you’ll be able to experience The Sims with your closest friends and live out your little digital lives together!
EA shared a “very early behind-the-scenes look” at “The Sims 5” during the Behind the Sims Summit livestream. Clicking play below should take you straight to the good stuff, or else you can jump to 26:48 manually for a sneak peak.
“We’re building the next generation Sims game and creative platform, reimaging the Sims you know and love with new ways to play,” said Lyndsay Pearson, VP of Franchise Creative for The Sims.
It looks like we’ll have much more control over how our houses look, with the coveted Create-A-Style tool from “The Sims 3” possibly even making a comeback. The video shows individual parts of a piece of furniture being customised like the base, headboard and footboard of a bed, and a colour wheel comes out at one point to dial in the perfect shade of blue for a couch.
By the looks of it, we’ll also have much more freedom in where and how to place items inside a house. Instead of being restricted to placing items inside a grid, the video shows pieces of furniture being scattered around a living room in a much more free-form and realistic manner.
Pearson said the changes they’re making are designed to offer “more flexibility than ever before.”

What Is The Sims 5 Release Date?
“The Sims 5” doesn’t have a release date yet, and the game unfortunately won’t be out for a few years yet.
Will The Sims 5 Have Multiplayer?
“The Sims 5” will have “collaborative play”, but EA hasn’t specified how in-depth this will be. It might be a fully-fledged multiplayer mode or simply the ability to share Sims and lots with your friends.
What we do know is that “The Sims 5” will “explore innovative ways to not only tell stories but to collaborate on those stories or creations with your closest friends across your favourite devices.”
Will The Sims 5 Be On Mobile?
In the most recent Behind the Sims stream, game director Grant Rodiek explained how “The Sims 5” on mobile will “remove the barriers to play.”
“You can have that deep dive, at home, on your PC, play for four hours, change every single thing about a piece of furniture that you imagine — typing in RGB values and changing every single part. That’s the PC experience, the true, rich experience you’re used to,” Rodiek said.
“Then on the go, you can grab your phone, and maybe it’s a different experience. Maybe you’re grabbing archetypes, pre-selecting templates, or grabbing the stuff you’ve already created. What this means is you can now play The Sims wherever you are, without barriers and without restrictions.”
