Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers that are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

FALSE
Claim by Club for Growth Action: Catherine Cortez Masto “was the deciding vote” to send COVID-19 stimulus checks to more than 1 million prisoners.

PolitiFact rating: Mostly False (Her vote was not the deciding vote. She did nothing, such as withholding her support until the last moment, that would justify singling her out.)

Nevada Sen. Cortez Masto was one of 50 votes, not the deciding vote, on stimulus checks for inmates

MISLEADING Claim by OAN: “More people have been killed by the COVID vaccines in the last 20 months than all the other vaccines in the world over the last thirty years combined.”

Health Feedback rating: Misleading (An adverse event reported to VAERS doesn’t necessarily mean that the vaccine caused the issue. The VAERS database is a tool as part of identifying unusual patterns that could indicate rare side effects. This requires much more detailed investigation beyond the total number of reports.)

COVID-19 vaccines have enhanced reporting requirements for vaccine safety database, so death reports cannot be simply compared to other vaccines

BLATANT
LIE
Claim by Ron DeSantis (R):  It’s not true that “the United States was built on stolen land.”

Politifact rating: Pants on Fire (There are several historical examples of the U.S. government seizing ancestral land from Native Americans. The U.S. often acquired Native American land through dubious treaties, and later violated them to bolster expansion. The U.S. government also forcibly removed Native Americans after former President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act of 1830. In Florida, more than 3,000 Native Americans were expelled from their land.)

Why Ron DeSantis’ claim about ‘stolen land’ is wrong

FALSE Claim by Dan Bongino: Twitter fact-checks Biden for first time ever.

AFP Fact Check rating: False (A crowdsourced program known as Birdwatch — where users, not Twitter employees, select the posts to check — has been in place since early 2021 and notes adding context have been attached to some of Biden’s posts since at least June. Of note, I am a Birdwatcher who has performed fact-checks on Twitter. Nothing has changed on Twitter per Elon Musk.)

TRUE Claim via Social Media: Mentions of the phrase “pregnant women” were changed to “pregnant people” on a page about flu guidance on the CDC website.

Snopes.com rating: True (yes, about 1 year ago.)

Did CDC Change ‘Pregnant Women’ to ‘Pregnant People’ in Flu Guidance?

FALSE (International: United Kingdom): The bank closures in India in October are because of a return to the gold standard there.

Rappler rating: False

India’s bank closures in October due to holidays, not return to the gold standard
