If you’re like me and have oily skin, you know that keeping the shine at bay isn’t an easy task. While I’ll often forgo a moisturizer in the hopes of keeping the grease to a minimum throughout the day, I’ve learned that failing to hydrate your skin at all can actually cause your skin to compensate for a lack of self-inflicted moisture by producing even more oil.

Just look to the experts: Joshua Zeichner, MD, Associate Professor of Dermatology Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, confirms it is a myth that people with oily skin do not need a moisturizer. “While the skin’s natural oil sebum plays a role in skin barrier protection, skin oil and skin hydration levels are two separate issues,” he shared with StyleCaster. “There are many people with oily skin that still need a moisturizer.  If you have oily skin, you just want to choose the right product to moisturize with.  I usually recommend lighter gel or lotion formulas that won’t weigh down the skin.”

Basically, you’ll want to be pickier when it comes to what moisturizers for oily skin you apply. “The heavier creams or balms typically leave the skin feeling sticky or greasy if you have oily skin to begin with.  Look for humectant ingredients like hyaluronic acid to pull in water to the outer skin layer to hydrate and plump.  Products should be oil free, which means that they do not contain heavy vegetable oils,” said Zeichner.

Aside from keeping the shine under control, a good moisturizer for oily skin with mattifying properties also tends to be a stand-out choice for those with sensitive and acne-prone skin, as excess oil and clogged pores can trigger active breakouts and blackheads.

With cooler weather and dryer conditions on the horizon, it’s natural for even the oiliest of skin types to need a little extra moisture this time of year. See the below best face moisturizers for oily skin that rival their high-end counterparts and will help to balance out hydration levels without leaving you looking shiny throughout the day.

Best Overall: Cetaphil Pro Oil Absorbing Moisturizer

Cetaphil is derm-approved drugstore label that seriously delivers with their gentle skincare range, without compromising effectiveness. This oil-controlling moisturizer ensures skin stays soft and supple, and is a really great wallet-friendly moisturizer for those who have oily skin.

Wears Well Under Makeup: Olay Regenerist Whip

This creamy yet lightweight moisturizer nourishes the skin without leaving behind a great film. It also happens to sit beautifully under makeup — you can actually use it in place of a primer.

This TikTok-famous water-gel moisturizer is perfect for combination or oily skin, because it isn’t an oil-based moisturizer. The moisturizer gets an extra boost from hyaluronic acid, which is known for keeping moisture locked into skin. Luckily though, this moisturizer absorbs very quickly and won’t make you look shiny as you layer makeup on top of it.

Cleanance Mattifying Emulsion
Avene

Best Mattifying: Avene Cleanance Mattifying Emulsion

If you’re looking for all-day oil control, this lightweight cream from Avene will deliver. It offers 24-hour hydration and dries to a powdery, matte finish, making it double as a mattifying primer for makeup. While Avene is definitely pricer than most drugstore options, you’re basically getting a 2-in-1 product here.
