  • Snow-starved California ski resorts delay openings despite powerful recent storms

    [ad_1]

It may have felt like the recent rain would never end in Los Angeles, but the record-breaking precipitation in Southern California has failed to translate into a much-desired dumping of snow at ski resorts across the state.

While Friday was originally set as the opening date of the Heavenly and Northstar ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe area, officials said mild weather and stubbornly insufficient flurries have delayed those plans.

Vail Resorts, which owns both resorts, has yet to announce an updated opening date. But the forecast ahead does not look promising.

“A dry forecast is in store for the next week through Thanksgiving and Black Friday,” Open Snow wrote in its Tahoe area forecast Friday. “We could see a change in the pattern the weekend of the 29th with colder air moving in and maybe some snow. Overall, through the long-range, there are no big storms showing up, but hopefully that changes as we go deeper into December.”

Mammoth Mountain, California’s highest-elevation ski resort, was also recently forced to delay the start of its season.

The Sierra Nevada resort had initially announced a Nov. 14 opening date, but pushed it off as an atmospheric river storm swept across the state. While forecasters hoped the low-pressure system would blanket the slopes in Mammoth, mountainside temperatures remained too warm for serious snow.

Disappointed skiers and snowboarders took to social media to share videos of the muddy slopes.

Fortunately, thanks to a moderate storm earlier this week and robust use of snow machines, Mammoth was able to open for the season Thursday with around one-third of its lifts running. Nevertheless, season snowfall totals remain below average.

Other major Golden State ski resorts are eyeing late November and early December openings. Palisades Tahoe is scheduled to open on Wednesday, just in time for Thanksgiving. Kirkwood resort, located south of Lake Tahoe, is hoping to open on Dec. 5.

Those seeking to hit the slopes closer to Los Angeles will have to have patience. Big Bear Mountain Resort in San Bernardino County has yet to set an opening date and currently has just 1 to 2 inches of snow on the ground.

Climate change has made the art of predicting and managing snowfall at California’s ski resorts much more challenging.

Recent years have been characterized by extreme boom and bust cycles, going from alarmingly low-snow winters in 2020 and 2021 to extreme accumulations in the 2022-23 season, when Mammoth Mountain received a record-breaking snowfall of more than 700 inches at its main lodge.

“We’re going through this climate whiplash of extreme drought years to extreme wet years — there are just no average years anymore,” Doug Obegi, a senior attorney at the National Resources Defense Council, said in a statement on 2023’s record-breaking season. “And we’re seeing that we are not prepared for either of those extremes.”

Overall, snow seasons are expected to trend warmer and drier. Researchers predict that from the 2050s to 2100, rising temperatures could push average snowlines 1,300 feet to 1,600 feet higher across the Sierra Nevada compared to a century earlier.

And extreme snow years, while welcomed by snowsport enthusiasts, come with their own challenges.

When snow falls in extreme storms as opposed to steadily over the course of the season, it increases the risk of avalanches and can force resorts to stop running lifts due to safety concerns. Then in the spring, deep snowpacks melt faster than normal, which can lead to dangerous flooding and even worsen the upcoming fire season.

  • New Six Pack, Heated Bubble Chairlifts Welcome Winter to SkiBig3 Resorts

    [ad_1]

With the welcome arrival of snowfall in southern Alberta, the resorts of SkiBig3 – Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt. Norquay – are excited to announce the debut of two new heated bubble chairlifts for the 2024-2025 ski and snowboard season. The additions at Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise Ski Resort, along with the existing Teepee Town LX Chair installed in 2014 at Banff Sunshine, mean SkiBig3 is home to all three of Canada’s heated bubble lifts.

Banff Sunshine is replacing its original quad chairlift, Angel Express (circa 1988), with the resort’s first state-of-the-art six-passenger high-speed luxury express lift, complete with direct drive (for a smoother ride), heated bucket seats, footrests, and a yellow weather protection bubble. A collaboration with chairlift manufacturer Leitner-Poma, the Super Angel features the latest EVO premium technology, which eliminates the traditional gearbox operating system for a smoother, faster, quieter ride.

Construction on the new Super Angel Express Heated Bubble Chairlift began on May 13, 2024. The unveiling of the new lift is tentatively scheduled for November 24, 2024.

In alignment with Banff Sunshine’s commitment to sustainability, the beloved Angel Express chair was transported to Castle Mountain Resort in southern Alberta, where it will become that resort’s first high-speed lift.

Operations crews at Lake Louise Ski Resort have also been busy over the summer with phase two of the two-part Juniper Chairlift installation. The new Pipestone Express Chair, formerly called Upper Juniper Chairlift during early development, is a Doppelmayr high-speed six-person heated lift. The chairlift’s bottom terminal is situated just below the top of the Lower Juniper Chairlift, while the top terminal provides quick access to the base of the resort’s Summit Chair. The heated chair with blue-hued bubble and convenient footrests also offers better access to the Lake Louise Ski Resort’s West Bowl, including some of the most exciting and technical in-bounds terrain in Canada for intermediate to expert skiers and snowboarders. With the ability to transport 2,000 skiers and riders per hour and a ride time of just 6.6 minutes, Pipestone Express will help reduce congestion and maximize time for exploring the resort’s 4,200 skiable acres.

Lake Louise Ski Resort’s new Pipestone Express Chairlift is tentatively scheduled to open the first week of December 2024.

SkiBig3 is excited to welcome guests to experience the future of skiing by unveiling these two new technologically advanced chairlifts for the 2024-2025 ski and snowboard season.

  • Coming Soon to Banff Sunshine Village This Winter 2024: The New Super Angel Luxury Chairlift

Coming Soon to Banff Sunshine Village This Winter 2024: The New Super Angel Luxury Chairlift

    [ad_1]

This winter, take flight on Banff Sunshine Village’s new chairlift, Super Angel. Built by Leitner-Poma, Super Angel will be North America’s first EVO six-passenger, heated, luxury chairlift!

The new Super Angel chairlift replaces the 35-year-old quad chair, Angel Express. Super Angel will be ready for skiers and snowboarders come November 2025.

“At Banff Sunshine, it’s our wish to be worthy of our location in Canada’s first National Park. As such, we believe in reinvesting into our guest experience. The new Super Angel will enhance the experience for all who visit our mountain resort. The lift itself is a state-of-the-art, luxury experience equipped with direct drive technology, featuring a six-passenger, high-speed chair with heated bucket seats, footrests, and a yellow bubble cover,” says Kendra Scurfield, VP Brand & Communications at Banff Sunshine.

The new lift will service terrain on Look Out Mountain. For the past 60+ years, guests have enjoyed the iconic terrain offered by Look Out Mountain (Delirium Dive, Angel Flight, & Piste Noir).

Super Angel will be the third incarnation of the popular lift. The original chair, built in the 1960s, was a two-passenger, fixed-grip lift. The lift was upgraded in 1988 to Angel Express, the first high-speed quad chair in Banff National Park. The high-speed quad transformed how the mountain skied.

The EVO technology, developed by Leitner-Poma, is a direct drive system that eliminates the need for a traditional gearbox, which results in a smoother, quieter ride.

Construction on the Super Angel lift began on May 13th, 2024. The new Super Angel’s larger size requires a wider lift line and new towers. Resort guests can watch the construction of Super Angel live while exploring the Sunshine Meadows this summer 2024.

For those who loved old Angel, you’ll be able to visit her at Castle Mountain Resort in the future. Angel Express was dismantled and transported to the southern Alberta resort.

“All of us at Banff Sunshine are looking forward to staying warm as we fly up the slopes in luxury,” continues Scurfield.

Super Angel Express will be the resort’s, (and Banff National Park’s), second heated luxury lift.

Flock Together to Banff Sunshine for the 94th Annual Slush Cup

    [ad_1]

An iconic Canadian Rockies tradition continues with the 94th final splash of the 23/24 Winter Ski and Snowboard Season. Banff Sunshine’s Slush Cup is the longest-running end-of-ski-season pond skimming event in North America. Skiers and snowboarders flock together at the shine on Slush Cup Monday, May 20, 2024.

The origins of Slush Cup trace back nearly a century, to a dare between friends on a particularly slushy day in the spring of 1928. As the legend goes, two buddies skiing the slopes of Sunshine encountered a patch of slush that beckoned them to attempt a daring feat: skiing across the slush.

“What once was a friendly dare is now the coolest party in the Canadian Rockies,” explains Kendra Scurfield, VP of Brand and Communications at Banff Sunshine Village.

On May 20, buckle up your boots and snap on your snorkels for Banff Sunshine’s 94th Slush Cup. Cheer on riders as they skim (or swim) across the slushy pool in costumes designed to impress a panel of celebrity judges.

Starting off is the biggest party weekend in the Canadian Rockies, with Slushshine Rail Jam on May 18th, 2024. This is followed by Watergate Banked Slalom on May 19th, 2024.
