  • Doechii, Kacey Musgraves Celebrate Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl LX Halftime Show

    In the wake of Bad Bunny’s momentous halftime show at Super Bowl LX on February 8, musicians, politicians, and many others are giving the Puerto Rican artist his flowers.

    On X, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote, “NUEVAYoL” alongside the Puerto Rican flag emoji, while Mavi remarked: “this shit hard im finna stop speaking English actually fuck English.” The Marías expressed some Puerto Rican pride, writing: “boricuaaaa.” Rauw Alejandro posted about the many Latin genres and dance styles Bad Bunny included in the show. He wrote, in Spanish: “Long live the BOMBA, the PLENA, the SALSA, the HIPHOP and above all LONG LIVE REGGAETON.” Ben Stiller also congratulated him, posting: “Incredible Half time show Bad Bunny.”

    Kacey Musgraves pointedly called out the conservative non-profit Turning Point USA’s “All-American Halftime Show,” which streamed on YouTube at the same time as Bad Bunny’s performance and featured Kid Rock. “Well. That made me feel more proudly American than anything Kid Rock has ever done,” Musgraves wrote.

    Doechii, who made her own appearance at the Super Bowl in an ad for Levi’s jeans, posted on X: “Bad Bunny WOW ! Fucking, WOW. History.” On Threads, Kerry Washington echoed the sentiment, sharing: “I don’t know if I’ll ever recover from that… WHAT👏🏾A👏🏾SHOW👏🏾.” SG Lewis said: “Holy shit that was the best half time show I’ve ever seen” and Monte Booker concurred, posting: “one of the best half times.” Nick León also supported the artist, writing: “Love bad bunny forever.” Nancy Sinatra felt similarly, quoting a post from Lynda Carter about Bad Bunny with: “Love him.” John Mellencamp added, “I don’t know what Bad Bunny is saying, however, I do know he is standing up for Puerto Rico and I am standing up for him. His half time show was great.”

    Bad Bunny’s halftime show was a love letter to Puerto Rico and Latinx communities around the world with ambitious set design and many, many special guests. Artists who joined him included Lady Gaga (with whom he salsa danced), Ricky Martin, Karol G, Young Miko, and Cardi B. The performance capped off a huge week for Bad Bunny, who also won Album Of The Year for Debí Tirar Más Fotos at the Grammys on February 1.

  • Yacht Rock is Everywhere in Modern Music

    In 2024, Yacht Rock: A DOCKumentary was released in homage to a genre of late ’70s, early ’80s easy listening pop music. The term “Yacht Rock” was actually coined as part of a web series joking that the light rock of that era was perfect for people aboard their fancy sea vessels.

    While what constitutes YR has been much debated because of its broad inclusion of everything from Michael Jackson to Gordon Lightfoot — Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen is not terribly enamored with the categorization despite, for many, being its epicenter — the bottom line is that it represents a kindler, gentler, soft-focus era of music’s past. But, if you listen carefully, you can hear its influence all over modern music.

    In a music world driven by loudness and pop controversy, there seems to be a yearning for something that is both softer on the ear and infinitely singable. If YR was anything, it was earworm-worthy, filled with the kind of hooks now craved by shower and karaoke singers around the world.

    The documentary sought to highlight that time in music, but it missed the fact that there are artists out there paying tribute all the time. On-the-nose representations like Young Gun Silver Fox and State Cows seem to be trying to single handedly keep the cool party vibes alive. And depending on the breadth of your definition of YR, the Bruno Mars/Anderson Paak collaboration, Silk Sonic, is clearly a pleasant rendering of that time in music (assuming you are ok with a little soul music when you set sail).

    But, more subtly the sound has permeated popular music across a pretty wide spectrum. Pillow soft drums and gentle harmonies blended with hooks that, while not quite approaching the accessibility of the Bee Gees or Doobie Brothers, are definitely on the catchier side.

    Southern folky acts like Goose are as much an homage to classic pop as they are to the Allman Brothers and the Eagles, the latter an artist that is frequently included in YR playlists. In fact, there is plenty of that folksy country-leaning style around modern music today taking their cues from the southern-tinged light rock of the ’70s. Just a cursory listen to Kacey Musgraves or HAIM or Maggie Rogers should set off the radar of anyone who still feels the pull of Jim Croce or Seals and Crofts.

    And even if you are among those who think YR should be centered more around the pop of the early ’80s (think Toto, Boz Skaggs and Texas’ own Christopher Cross), that’s out there as well. Tell us you don’t hear the strains of the late ’70s in Sabrina Carpenter’s “Juno,” right down to the casual sexually tinged lyrics that practically scream “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight” or “Kiss You All Over,” albeit less overt like everything else in the world today.

    Charlie Puth, Teddy Swims, even the Jonas Brothers wear the YR influences on their sleeves on occasion. John Mayer is practically a walking ad for the style, but he grew up listening to it, so we have to discount his impact slightly.

    Most of the winks to YR in modern music are just that. The technology that exists today along with the way songs are crafted for modern listeners has radically altered everything about popular music. But, the similarities are there if you pay attention. In the end, YR may have had a bigger impact on modern music than anyone could have anticipated when all the early new wavers, punks and metal heads were snickering about Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. Little did we know.

We’d love for Post and Dolly to link up on a sweet country love ballad. Anytime Post releases a love song, we fall more in love with him and his music. 

    Some of our favorite Dolly songs are ‘9 to 5’ and ‘I Will Always Love You.’ Wouldn’t it be so cool to hear Post cover one of these? We can only hope and pray until the album drops.

    After a week full of 60+ degree weather in New York, I’m officially read to slam the laptop shut and enter the weekend. I’m bathing suit shopping online, I’m spending time basking in the short-lived early spring weather, and I’m absolutely gearing up to make another playlist to get through the weekend.

    Since this weekend is St. Patrick’s Day, I’m sure many of you are traveling to hotspots like Boston and New York for parades and soul-crushing crowds. The only way to get through this weekend of horrors? Lots of music, and even more green beer. Doctor’s orders.

    But, you can’t keep replaying your same old playlist with songs your friends have heard come over your speakers time and time again. People will stop letting you get aux if you can’t deliver a dance-worthy playlist that’s both refreshing and timeless. That’s where I come in, dear reader.

    I love to deliver a playlist filled with new music releases today, March 15, 2024. So get your Spotify accounts ready, because it’s time to see what’s in store for this week! Let’s get listening.

    ZAYN- “What I Am”

    He’s baaaacckkk. Former member of One Direction, Zayn Malik, left the band (and should be paying my therapy bills for this) in 2015 and completely switched direction (pun intended). Now an R&B soul god, ZAYN has found his stride with “What I Am.”

    “I think just being where I was at that time, staying away from things and living with my own thoughts inspired me to want to write something from that place. I’ve got to put this out as a whole body of work, it’s something for myself, not even just for the world,” says Zayn.

    I worried at first that ZAYN wouldn’t be able to create a stylistically different track without sounding repetitive. “What I Am” highlights his vocals without going overboard, conveys yearning, longing, and melancholy all in one. It’s an easy listen. Zayn Malik, you’ll always be famous.

    Cardi B- “Enough (Miami)”


    If you’ve been missing Old Cardi, she’s here. With “Enough (Miami)”, Cardi goes back to her roots: classic rap, biting lyrics, a hook that gets you out of your seat. It’s reminiscent of classics like “Bodak Yellow”, where Cardi tells it as it is: you can’t beat her, you can’t even be her.

    Kacey Musgraves- “The Architect”


    With one of the most satisfyingly crisp voices in country music, Kacey Musgraves delivers “The Architect” on a silver platter. It’s introspective, beckoning the listener to really look inside themselves and wonder who’s the architect of their lives. A song about not fully understanding someone, something, or everything, “The Architect” is one-of-a-kind.

    Ahead of her new album, Deeper Well, which she promises to be a “cleanse” of sorts for listeners, “The Architect” is a great intro.

    Zack Bia, Teezo Touchdown- “DAMN”

    Any weekend should be met with house music, which is why Zack Bia and Teezo Touchdown’s “DAMN” is a perfect fit. Something light and easy, “DAMN” is the perfect track to lead off a night out, or to help you get hyped up while getting ready. Zack Bia is known for his commitment to the nightlife scene, so it’s no surprise that this track embodies a night out with your friends.

    Sydney Sherrill- “Boy In The Blue Cadillac”

    Alongside her debut album, 17 Young and Stunning, Sydney Sherrill releases vocal powerhouse single, “Boy In The Blue Cadillac.” Few singer-songwriters can belt out a commanding chorus riddled with guitar trills and have such an impact as Sydney Sherrill does.

    Singing from the perspective of her 17-year-old self, 17 Young and Stunning, takes us through the throes of adolescence. From finding your first love to figuring out who you really are in the world, Sherrill knows how confusing growing up can be. “Boy In The Blue Cadillac” sends you back in time in the best way.

    Cloonee- “Sippin’ Yak (We Like)”

    Cloonee is in high demand: with both weekends of Coachella booked, a headline LIV Beach Las Vegas residency, a show at the Brooklyn Mirage, and more, fans flock to see a performance no matter where he is. After teasing “Sippin’ Yak” on socials and in live sets, Cloonee is finally releasing the track ahead of all of these major performances.

    “Sippin’ Yak (We Like)” is an instant hit for fans of tech house with an intricate eye for production and style.

    Whether you are ready or not, we are officially in 2024. It’s okay if you’ve already abandoned your overambitious resolutions for more plausible goals — or if you’ve just given up entirely. There’s always next year.

    But if there’s one constant, it’s listening to music. If Spotify Wrapped taught me anything, it’s that I really can make it through anything with the right soundtrack. We’re edging closer to awards season, which means everyone is looking for the best of the best. Our inner critic comes out and, suddenly, we’re all members of the Recording Academy.

    With the 2024 Grammy’s right around the corner, it’s easy to get caught up in the hits from yesteryear. But I’m already looking ahead to the new year of music. And it’s time to recognize artists who are about to have a huge year. Some of them may be familiar names and hopefully, others will become new favorites of yours.

    Regardless, there have been four artists who stuck out to me this past year. These artists aren’t new per se, but they’ve skyrocketed with recent success leading the charts, making an impact on pop culture, and featuring prominently on Spotify playlists. Each artist has been selected because they have the It Factor — and finally everyone is seeing it.

    Here are the four artists to watch in 2024!

    Carpenter fell headfirst into a love triangle scandal alongside pop queen Olivia Rodrigo and her castmate, Joshua Bassett. In 2022, she released her fifth studio album, emails i can’t send, which solidified her as a certified pop songwriter who has every “It” factor you look for in a young starlet.

    Her sound can span genres- with synthy, sexy pop/R&B blends like “bet u wanna” to stomp-and-holler-inspired “Already Over.” Her take on heartache and the increased public scrutiny is both refreshing and witty.

    After opening for Taylor Swift this year and going viral for her “Nonsense” outros, and most recently performing for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, it’s hard to imagine that this is the last we’ll see of Sabrina.

    A favorite here at Popdust, Noah Kahan has perfected that aforementioned “stomp and holler” sound. After a year of country-folk renaissance, Kahan’s Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever) deluxe edition released in 2023 and continuously broke records…leading to collaborations with artists like Post Malone, Hozier, Kacey Musgraves, and Lizzy McAlpine.

    With a sold out stadium tour on the horizon, Kahan is skyrocketing. His storytelling through music is unmatched- painting pictures of woeful hometown memories, heartache, loss, anxiety, and more.

    His self-deprecating humor and appreciation for success make Noah Kahan who he is. A longtime advocate for mental health, Kahan started The Busyhead Project to raise money for the cause. He has us in the palm of his hand, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

    2022 was huge for Rapp, with her Snow Hard Feelings tour accompanying the album. She’s the talk of the town, weaving tales of unrequited love, belting ballads of heartache, and balancing them out with punchy pop tunes that are worthy of a repeat.

    She’s the face of both cinema and music right now, with a versatility of creativity that so few can achieve. It would be a mistake not to include her on our artists to watch this year, because we know Renee Rapp is only getting started.

    When I was younger, I knew of two ways to get music: the legal way, paying $0.99 (and then $1.25) for songs on iTunes, and the illegal way, paying $0 to download the pirated versions on Limewire…Don’t lie, you had your ways, too.

    Maybe I’m aging myself by saying social media wasn’t as prevalent as it was now…you couldn’t just go on Instagram and announce new music. That’s right, you’d have to do things like watch television and pay attention, like when Disney Channel would play music videos instead of commercials. It was prime MTV time, you know that line from Bowling For Soup’s hit song “1985”: “and music still on MTV?” That.

    Essentially, you’d rely on solely on search engines, iTunes, and the radio to get your news. How archaic. Back when “doom scrolling” meant checking your email incessantly for new messages from your friends.

    There was no Spotify or Apple Music to curate special playlists…only writers like me reviewing new tracks (that were often printed on CD’s…gasp). Can you believe we used to burn playlists onto CD’s and listen to them as our parents drove?

    Now, music is more accessible than ever. We have access to any song written ever, essentially. I mean, people are constantly even hacking into celebrity’s iClouds and releasing their unreleased tracks! (It’s not ethical, but you get my point.)

    There is no better time to be a fan of music than this era. Now, with apps like Spotify, you can get a monthly subscription to listen to unlimited, commercial-free music with specially picked playlists geared towards your music taste and access to pre-sales for your favorite artist’s shows. The music world is truly at our fingertips.

    And that’s where I come in! I pick the best music that comes out every Friday across the board so you don’t have to comb through all of the new music playlists and feel lost. If you want your weekend to get a little easier, let’s get listening.

    Noah Kahan, Kacey Musgraves- “She Calls Me Back”

    At this point, Noah Kahan is just completing side quests. Whether it be performing onstage with Hozier, releasing collabs with Post Malone, Lizzy McAlpine, Zach Bryan, or most recently Kacey Musgraves, Noah’s been busy. This week’s newest duet is with Musgraves, who shows the other side of Kahan’s hit song “She Calls Me Back.” Musgraves’ melodic voice adds the perfect touch to this song filled with yearning.

    James Arthur- “Just Us” 

    What James Arthur can do to a song is unmatched. He’s the mastermind behind a heart-aching, soul-grasping ballad that will top the radio for weeks on end. An instantaneous creator of classics, James Arthur releases “Just Us”, ahead of his new album Bitter Sweet Love. It follows singles like “Blindside” and “A Year Ago”, “Just Us” is a reminder to focus on what’s really important.

    “‘Just Us’ is a song in which I confess to running away from what really matters and getting lost in the pursuit of validation from external things,” James explains. “It’s about chasing a hedonistic, hollow life. Realizing the true meaning of life which is of course about true love, loving ourselves, our families and our communities and being there for them.”

    Dom Dolla- “Saving Up” 


    Dom Dolla is one of the most exciting names in the electric dance community right now. With the mega-hit “Rhyme Dust” featuring the iconic MK out earlier this year, we got a sense of how Dom Dolla can produce any sort of dance music- regardless of if it’s house, disco, or anything in between. Now, with “Saving Up”, you have the perfect disco-inspired song to get you through the weekend. It’s a promising reminder that anything Dom touches is a banger.

    “I was in the UK last year after a massive summer of touring when I caught the train down to Brighton with some friends and ended up in an incredible studio overlooking the beach. I was missing home a bit, but felt really inspired and wanted to write a feel-good record, reminding myself of the importance of saving time for the ones I care about and love. Whilst (in the studio) overlooking the same site Fatboy Slim hosted his ‘Big Beach Boutique’, I was thinking about the UK’s dance music history and it inspired me so I decided to lean into the idea of writing something that sounds sampled, but isn’t. I often like to write records completely on my own, but it feels so perfect to have written this one alongside some good pals, Clementine Douglas, Caitlin Stubbs & Toby Scott.”

    Joel Corry- Another Friday Night 

    Another heavy-hitter in the EDM community is Joel Corry, who has a proven track record of solidified hits with songs like “Lonely”, “0800 Heaven”, “Head & Heart.” He’s produced songs that are the soundtrack to many nights out, and now he’s here with his debut album, Another Friday Night, just in time for the weekend. It’s one of the most highly anticipated dance albums of the year, with Corry’s uncanny ability to make a song everyone likes.

    Claire Rosinkranz- Just Because

    Claire Rosinkranz isn’t our featured artist of the week “just because”, it’s due to the fact that she’s released her debut album, Just Because. Rosinkranz is a young, dynamic artist who encapsulates the sound of surf and Southern California through picturesque music and retro inspiration. After being discovered at age 16, Rosinkranz has since taken the world by storm with her aptitude for songwriting and her fortifying vocal range.

    Just Because is highlighted by key single tracks like “Wes Anderson”, where Rosinkranz encourages the listener to get over their breakup…and “Swinging at the Stars”, more of an optimistic love anthem with an anticipated accompanying music video featuring a very special guest. It’s a no-skips, must-not-miss album.

    Chloe Stroll- “Hurricane” 

    No stranger to our featured artists lineup, Chloe Stroll is a Popdust fave. After debuting her music career earlier this year (and exclusively speaking with us on the matter), Chloe Stroll is not backing down. Her newest release, “Hurricane”, is a testimony to being loyal to the ones you love.

    One of the most admirable parts of Stroll’s music is that she is staying true to herself, and writing from a genuine place in her heart…which translates to the listener over time. “Hurricane” is an easy listen when you pair her voice with true, sincere lyrics.

    Neil Frances, DRAMA- “Energy”

    A fun-filled track meant for the dance floor, “Energy” is the product of when artists are able to combine their sounds seamlessly. It doesn’t always work, but “Energy” brings a genuine sense of excitement and makes you want to stay out dancing all weekend long.

    “Working with Neil Frances is fun. We’ve been jamming to their tunes for years, and when we teamed up, it was like a lightbulb moment. You know how it is when you work with strangers – it can be hit or miss. But with these guys, it’s a total breath of fresh air! We see a lot of ourselves in them which makes it very easy to create together. There is no pressure to conform or do things the “right” way. We’re just having fun and doing whatever it takes to take our music to the next level.”
