‘Avatar 2’ Passes ‘Titanic’ For Third on All-Time Box Office List

James Cameron just beat … James Cameron.

It might have sounded like a pipe dream when the film was coming out — especially since it took over a dozen years for Avatar: The Way of Water to follow AvatarSupposedly, that movie left no cultural impact. No one remembered Avatar, even thought it became the biggest film of all-time. Avatar? What’s Avatar? Isn’t that that cartoon about people who can bend air?

No. Avatar is Avatar. It‘s about wild blue aliens with braids that they stick in dragons and fly in the sky. And this weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water grossed $2.244 billion at the worldwide box office — good enough to pass James Cameron’s other massive blockbuster, Titanic, with its $2.243 billion worldwide. That makes The Way of Water the third-biggest movie ever — and means that two of the three biggest movies in history are Avatar movies. (And that three of the four biggest movies in history are James Cameron movies.)

To commemorate the occasion, 20th Century Studios released this video:

After continuing a slow, inexorable march up the all-time worldwide box office chart, this may finally be where Avatar: The Way of Water stays. The number two film on the list, Avengers: Endgame, has $2.799 billion — more than half a billion more than The Way of Water at present. That’s going to be a hard number to match. And the original Avatar is even farther ahead than that — it’s got $2.923 billion worlwide, a little less than $700 million more than its sequel at present. (For sake of comparison: That difference is about how much Captain America: The Winter Soldier made in its entire run in theaters.)

Here’s what the all-time box office list looks like now that The Way of Water has unseated Titanic…

The Biggest Box-Office Hits in History (Worldwide)

These are the highest grossing films in the history of cinema.

Avatar: The Way of Water is still playing in theaters. Avatar 3 is currently scheduled to open in theaters on December 20, 2024. Where do we think that one will wind up on this list?

‘Avatar’ Dethrones ‘Top Gun’ As Biggest Film of 2022

James Cameron, that old cinematic maverick, is king of the movie world yet again.

After Tuesday’s box office grosses, Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has now grossed more than $1 billion overseas, making it the only 2022 release to accomplish that feat. And that number doesn’t include its grosses in the U.S., where it has already made over $450 million dollars. All told, the movie is hours away from crossing $1.5 billion worldwide — putting it ever so slightly ahead of 2022’s previous box-office champion, Top Gun: Maverick.

Cameron has said that Avatar: The Way of Water would need to be one of the most successful films in history just to turn a profit, and right now it looks like it’s on pace to do just that. After a little over two weeks of release in theaters around the world, the movie is already the 11th biggest film ever. It’s already grossed more money than Frozen IIAvengers: Age of UltronBlack PantherHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It’s only a matter of days before it cracks the all-time worldwide box office top ten, where the number ten spot is currently occupied by Furious 7 and its $1.51 billion. (The original Avatar remains the all-time highest-grossing film ever, with $2.922 billion in earnings across its various theatrical releases.)

While Top Gun: Maverick is going to wind up as 2022’s second-biggest film when all is said and done, it still earned more than $1.48 billion worldwide, vastly exceeding most expectations for the movie’s financial potential. And for now it also remains the biggest domestic hit of 2022. While Avatar has yet to clear $500 million in the U.S., Maverick grossed more than $718 million domestically. The Way of Water may never top that number, even as it continues to attract huge crowds around the world.

Avatar: The Way of Water remains in release in theaters around the world. Top Gun: Maverick is now streaming on Paramount+.

2022 Movies That Got a 0 on Rotten Tomatoes

It might be an understatement to say these 2022 releases were not popular with critics…

  • Avatar: The Way of Water hits $1 billion in global sales in just two weeks

Avatar: The Way of Water hits $1 billion in global sales in just two weeks

Avatar: The Way of Water surpassed $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales after two weeks in theaters, Walt Disney Co. said.

The movie reached the sales milestone faster than Top Gun: Maverick, from Paramount Global, and Jurassic World: Dominion, from Comcast Corp.’s Universal, the only other 2022 movies to sell $1 billion of tickets. It’s the fastest a film has made that much since Spider-Man: No Way Home a year ago, according to a statement from Disney on Wednesday.

The Way of Water is one of the most expensive movies ever made and will likely need to keep up a strong sales pace to break even. Director James Cameron said it needs to take in $2 billion in ticket sales to make money. The first Avatar made almost $3 billion at the global box office.

In the US and Canada, the sequel has crossed $300 million in sales, Disney said. Earlier this week, the Burbank, California-based company said that the picture had generated $95.5 million in ticket sales in those markets over the long weekend alone, far exceeding expectations given theater closures in some states due to blizzards.

The film follows the indigenous Na’vi humanoid race that inhabits a moon called Pandora and the colonization that threatens them. About 78% of critics recommend it, according to the review site RottenTomatoes.com.

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Passes $1 Billion at Box Office

James Cameron has said that Avatar: The Way of Water was so expensive to make that it would need to become one of the biggest films in history to even turn a profit.

    So far, so good.

The long-awaited sequel to Avatar defied naysayers who claimed the original — which remains the highest-grossing film in history — left behind no cultural impact has now grossed $1 billion worldwide in just 12 days of release.

It is one of only three films to do so in 2022. The others were sequels as well: Top Gun: Maverick ($1.48 billion) and Jurassic World: Dominion ($1.001 billion). It has already outgrossed several of the other biggest hits of the year, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($955 million), Minions: The Rise of Gru ($939 million), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($801 million), The Batman ($770 million) and Thor: Love and Thunder ($760 million).

Even with $1 billion in worldwide grosses, The Way of Water has only achieved a fraction of the success of Avatar. After multiple re-releases, Cameron’s 2009 film has grossed $2.92 billion worldwide —more than Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion) and Cameron’s own Titanic ($2.2 billion).

The Way of Water’s continued success will be crucial to the future of the franchise. Cameron has plans to make at least three — and possibly as many as five — additional sequels. Disney has committed to making Avatar 3, which Cameron has already shot, but if these two films aren’t enormous hits, the rest of the projects could fall by the wayside.

At this point, The Way of Water is performing well, even despite terrible weather all over the country throughout the Christmas holiday. But time will tell just how long Cameron gets to spend on Pandora in the future.

Avatar The Way Of Water Monday Box Office: James Cameron’s film holds well after a great weekend; Adds 20 cr

    [ad_1]

James Cameron‘s Avatar The Way Of Water is performing extremely well at the box office in India. The film packed a very strong first weekend of over Rs. 128.5 cr nett and the film is far from slowing down as it has a lot of business left to do. The holiday season is yet to start and it is certain that the film will not slow down, courtesy the not-so-strong local competition, atleast for another three weeks, looking at the advance bookings.

Avatar: The Way Of Water held very strongly with a 50 percent drop from the first Friday, which only goes on to indicate a strong hold. The film added a figure in the vicinity of Rs 19 – 21 crore on its fourth ticketing day. Interestingly, the first Monday of the film is higher than the opening of all Hollywood releases of 2022 in India, barring Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. With a hold like this, one can be sure that the Christmas and New Year holidays are going to be bumper for the film. It will be fancying its chances to record a higher eighth day than the first day of the upcoming Bollywood release Cirkus and that will be a huge achievement.

Avatar grossed over Rs. 435 million dollars in its very first weekend worldwide. India emerged as the third biggest global market, only behind USA and China in terms of number of tickets sold. It is to be seen how many tickets India is able to contribute in the film’s full run. Based on projections, a number of 1.5 crore tickets should be a reasonable ask, given that total sales have already surpassed 80 lakh.

Have a look at the day-wise box office collections of Avatar: The Way Of Water:-
