Acclaimed Indian filmmakers Shoojit Sircar and Vikramaditya Motwane have joined forces to present “Thursday Special,” a short film by Indian National Award winner Varun Tandon that has earned significant recognition on the international festival circuit.
The intimate drama, which explores themes of love, companionship and the passage of time, recently claimed the Most Poetic Film Award at Serbia’s Küstendorf Film Festival 2025, a distinction personally selected by renowned director Emir Kusturica.
“Thursday Special” stars Anubha Fatehpuria and Ramakanth Dayama as Ram and Shakuntala, an elderly married couple whose relationship is anchored by their mutual passion for food and a weekly Thursday tradition. Karan Luthra produces, with Tandon penning the script alongside co-writer and executive producer Krati Tandon.
Sircar, whose directing credits include “Piku,” “Vicky Donor” and “October,” praised the film’s understated approach. “Thursday Special really moved me with its simplicity and gentle storytelling,” he said, drawing comparisons to his own unreleased feature “Shoe Bite,” which starred Amitabh Bachchan.
“Varun’s nuanced portrayal of companionship, ageing, and love is heartfelt and mature. It’s a delicately handled take on marriage and middle-age relationships – especially impressive for a young filmmaker – and it reminded me, in a way, of my unreleased film Shoe Bite,” Sircar added. “The storytelling in ‘Thursday Special’ is clear and sincere, with every department serving the story. Knowing that Varun has made over 15 short films highlighted his passion and dedication, and I felt both he and the film deserved support.”
Motwane, known for pushing boundaries in contemporary Indian cinema, emphasized the film’s focus on overlooked narratives. “When I watched ‘Thursday Special’, I was struck by the fact that though all the stories we tell are human stories, we tend to forget that there are so many other stories out there in the mundane, and in the lives of people who you would not expect to have unique stories,” he said.
“I really enjoyed the film. I think people should see it, and they will like it. It’s a film that you can talk about and discuss and not just from an aesthetic perspective. While it’s beautifully directed and performed, it is truly special in terms of pure story, pure feeling,” Motwane added.
For Tandon, whose short “Syaahi” earned a Special Jury Award at the Indian National Film Awards, the project represents a long-cherished creative vision. “This is a story that has stayed in my heart for years. I was taken over by the sheer excitement and curiosity to see these characters on screen and watch their lives unfold,” said the filmmaker, who also directed the documentary short “Dribbling Dreams.”
“Thursday Special is a heartfelt portrayal of a couple whose lives revolve around their shared passion for food. Through their weekly tradition, we delve into their world and witness the intricate layers of their relationship,” Tandon added.
The short has amassed more than 25 awards across global festivals since its premiere at Mecal Pro in Barcelona. Notable wins include Best Narrative Short at the New York Indian Film Festival, Best International Short Film at the Adelaide Independent Film Festival, and Best Narrative Short at the Tryon International Film Festival.
The film is set for release on Jan. 29 via the Humans of Cinema YouTube channel.
Amitabh Bachchan paid a heartfelt tribute to his Sholay co-star late Dharmendra during a recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati. It featured the cast and crew of Ikkis, which is the late actor’s final film before his passing in November. He was 89.
In Ikkis, Dharmendra essays the role of the father of Arun Khetarpal, India’s youngest Param Vir Chakra awardee. The war hero, who lost his life during the 1971 India-Pakistan conflict at just 21, is portrayed in the film by Bachchan’s grandson, Agastya Nanda.
Speaking on the show, Bachchan described Ikkis as a parting gift that Dharmendra left behind for cinema lovers. He reflected on the veteran actor’s lifelong devotion to his craft. He noted that true artists continue creating until their final moments. Bachchan referred to Dharmendra not merely as an individual but as an emotion, one that lives on as both a memory and a blessing.
Director Sriram Raghavan, who had previously collaborated with Dharmendra in the 2007 film Johnny Gaddar, said working with him on Ikkis held special significance. He expressed gratitude that Dharmendra’s final onscreen appearance was in a film he directed, adding that the actor delivered an exceptional performance.
Jaideep Ahlawat, who plays a Pakistani army officer in the film and shares several scenes with Dharmendra, also spoke about the experience. He said that despite Dharmendra’s towering stature in cinema, his presence on set felt warm and familial rather than intimidating.
Bachchan also revisited a lighter moment from the sets of Sholay. He shared a humorous anecdote from the film’s shooting in Bengaluru. He recalled Dharmendra’s wrestling strength. He hilariously revealed that the pain visible in his death scene was genuine because Dharmendra had held him tightly during the shot.
Raghavan revealed that he was initially looking to cast a younger actor for Ikkis when producer Dinesh Vijan suggested Agastya Nanda. He noted that the newcomer reminded him of Bachchan’s appearance in Saat Hindustani.
Agastya, meanwhile, said the film gave him a chance to see a more playful side of his grandfather, who is otherwise quite serious at home. He added that both Bachchan and Raghavan advised him to remain committed to meaningful work and stay focused on the craft.
Several big Bollywood stars were recently seen attending a private screening for the upcoming movie, Ikkis. The event was a special moment for the cast and their families as they gathered to watch the film before its big release. Agastya Nanda, who plays the lead role, was seen at the screening looking sharp. His grandfather, Amitabh Bachchan, also attended to show his support for Agastya’s latest project.
Adding to the star power, Akshay Kumar arrived at the venue. He was joined by his sister, Alka Bhatia, whose daughter Simar Bhatia is making her debut in this film. The stars appeared to be in high spirits as they posed for the cameras. Ikkis releases in theatres on January 1, 2026. It stars Agastya Nanda, Simar Bhatia, Jaideep Ahlawat and the late actor Dharmendra in what will be his final on-screen appearance.
India won its 9th Asia Cup in a thrilling final last night, defeating Pakistan in Dubai. However, after the match, India refused to accept the trophy or medals from ACC President and Pakistan’s PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi, citing tensions between the two countries, especially after the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year. Several Indian celebrities took to social media to celebrate India’s win and congratulate the team. Some also trolled the Pakistan team.
Actor Anil Kapoor wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “India Zindabad.” Superstar Mammootty shared a picture and expressed, “Team India didn’t just win the Asia Cup, they owned it. Champions without a single defeat. Absolutely magnificent!”
Anupam Kher added, “Bharat Mata ki jay! Kya baat hai (Wow)! What a game! Oh my God. Jeetenge bhai jeetenge. Bharat Mata ki jay (We will win. Hail India)! Vande Mataram. Khush ho gaya dil. Kya bolun main (I’m so happy. What do I say?). Superb. Proud of my country, proud of this cricket team. Fantastic, very well played. God bless them.”
Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan took this opportunity to troll former Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. For some context, Akhtar recently made a slip of the tongue and referred to Indian cricketer Abhishek Sharma as Abhishek Bachchan. He said in an interview, “If Pakistan manage to get Abhishek Bachchan out in a hypothetical situation, what happens to India’s middle order?” before he was quickly corrected by the host. Reacting to this, Abhishek had tweeted, “Sir, with all due respect… don’t think they’ll even manage that! And I’m not even good at playing cricket.”
Big B referred to this while trolling the Pakistan team after their defeat. He wrote, “Jeet Gaye! Well played ‘Abhishek Bachchan’ Udhar zabaan ladkhadai, aur idhar bina batting, bowling fielding kiye, ladkhada diya dushman ko!! Bolti bandh! Jai Hind! Jai Bharat! Jai Maa Durga!! (We won! Well played ‘Abhishek Bachchan’. A slip of tongue there, and here a slip on the field, we shut down the opponent with our perfromance! Hail Maa Durga)
T 5516(i) – जीत गये !! 🇮🇳🇮🇳 .. well played ‘Abhishek Bachchan’ ..
Several other celebrities, such as Sidharth Malhotra, Ali Fazal, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ranveer Singh, Angad Bedi, Preity Zinta, Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, among others, cheered for India. Take a look at their reactions:
The Ba***ds of Bollywood actor Raghav Juyal, who was in Dubai, told ANI, “Bohot acha laga aaj. Aur main apne bacchon ko bataunga ki main ye legendary match dekhne aaya tha. Bilkul kamaal ho gaya (It felt so good today. I will even tell my children that I came to watch this legendary match. Absolutely amazing).”
Memories come rushing back like drops of rain pelting my head. Every drop of rain, a tender emotion, every sheet of water releases a frisson of feelings. It’s so easy to gush about someone who has been an inexorable part of my life for over three decades now. Amit ji has been a part of my consciousness ever since I saw him create magic on screen in Parwana playing the intense, silent yet obsessive lover opposite Yogeeta Bali. Incidentally, Yogeeta was the one who introduced us at Madras airport.
Whatever I am as an actor, I owe 100 per cent to him. I just soaked in whatever he had to offer just observing him. And all of that comes back to me like a time release pill. Every time I’m stuck or have a mental block during a performance, I refer back to whatever I’ve learnt from him. And everything else takes care of itself.
There is no learning like first-hand experience. In that sense, Amitji who-is an institution has been my school, my college, my university. You can’t drill or force a child to inculcate discipline. You need to create an atmosphere by just being everything that you want him or her to be. It’s like the guru-shishya Parampara. Similarly, Amitji created the perfect mahol (environment) for me just by virtue of being himself. And the irony is that he was totally oblivious of the impact he had on mine or anybody else’s life. And mind you, he’s never ever taught me anything or helped me with my scenes or stuff like that. Just his presence and spirit contributed to my métier as an actor and as a human being.
This may sound like a completely demented, obsessive fan’s outpouring. Call it what you will but it’s my point of view. Amitji brought the whiff of purity, integrity, honesty in every gesture of his on and off screen. To employ a terrible cliche, he is ‘to the manner born’. His sense of aesthetics, his baritone, his voice modulation and his performances have been discussed ad nauseum. Without hesitation, let me reiterate that Amitji has contributed immeasurably to me being an actor. He’s like my inner conscience which guides me through life and my performances. The conscience does not consciously teach you anything. It’s always there. You just tap into it whenever you need it. As time goes by, I believe it’s more and more real, like the voice of God. You may not get to see it but you feel it all the time.
Because Amitji is so real, his consistency is so real. The simplicity and beauty of it is that he knows no other way. To me he is a unique human being. And I don’t mean that as a compliment. God intended all of us to be unique individuals and excel in our unique qualities. It’s just that in today’s what’s-in-it-for-me culture where people have hidden agendas, where everyone is conniving, strategising and networking, people tend to make a big deal out of natural virtues as something out of the ordinary or extraordinary. And Amitji is completely nidhaal (oblivious) of his genuine qualities as a human being. Thank God for that. There is someone above who keeps count and tallies everything for him. So, in that sense, Amitji is truly protected. He just has to think of something in his mind and nature conspires to make it happen for him. It’s a perfect paradox, the more he’s scarred, tried and tested, the more he grows in stature and strength.
And the camera caught that. I was pleasantly surprised to find my partner in dance sequences who complemented me in every step. My fans write to me that the Yeh kahan aa gaye from Silsila is one of my most romantic songs ever and keep asking me if it was for real. What can I say but that it’s the power of the magical movies. And somehow the audience also catches on and wants to believe that vibe is for real. Or else how do you explain a song like that becoming such a universal rage?
After Ram Balram, we didn’t get a chance to work together for a long time until Silsila. I remember shooting the ‘I hate you’ at Lodhi garden with Amitji. It was my big moment. To make matters worse, Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi was being shot next door. The entire crowd had poured onto our set. As always, I was nervous as hell and wanted to run away. Amitji was his usual deadpan cool dude self. Sensing my panic, he asked me, “Kya hua bhai, what’s the problem?’’ I replied that I was intimidated by the crowds and wanted to drop dead. Then he told me an anecdote about James Dean who during a shoot, peed in public to rid himself of his fear of crowds. I was like, “Thank you, that makes me feel so much better. Now I can die in peace.” However we did that scene in one straight take. Don’t ask me how I did it, I just thanked my lucky stars and got the hell out of there. With super duper professionals like Mr Bachchan, there’s no other way out. One just lives, experiences and never forgets.
My loss is that I didn’t get a chance to share the phenomenal growth of Amitji as an actor. So would you blame me for being thrilled when his producers requested me to dub for Neetu Singh in Yaaraana, Sridevi in Aakhri Raasta, Jayasudha and the late Soundarya in Sooryavansham?
When fans write to me and question why we haven’t worked together after Silsila, the only rational answer that I can think of is that the wait to be able to co-star with Amitji is worth it. That everything happens for the right reason at the right time. And I’d attribute that to the better judgment of the directors who believe that they’ve yet to come across something worthy of our calibre. I truly believe that sabr ka phal meetha hota hai. In this case, time is not of the essence. That I know for sure.
What kind of dua can I offer him on his birthday? I hope that everyone is as fortunate as me to live a life with a role model like Amitji. I hope he realises his full potential and never underestimates his power. May he always be blessed with serenity of mind and body. I wish and pray he’s in optimum health always. Just imagine the impact when Amitji finally becomes aware of his true unique qualities. Right now, he’s blissfully unaware of the way he’s impacted any and every one who’s been remotely touched by his presence. Amitabh Bachchan is an experience. You have to feel the full blast to understand it. Like always, memories keep rushing back and fill the vacant spaces between my thoughts… what else can I say now… to reiterate a line from Silsila, “Jo baat labzon meir adaa ho jaaye woh baat hi kya…”
Rekha’s favourite performances of Amitabh Bachchan…
Saudagar
I react to his performance here like a woman not just an ardent fan. The complexity he brought to his role, being married to an older woman, playing the typical Indian man without seeming too chauvinistic. It was edgy no doubt.
Saudagar
Parwana
The dark brooding possessive lover. That ‘look’ in his eyes, Wow!
Parwana
I loved the relationship with his wife, the way he speaks to Waheeda)/ in the Awadhi dialect. The relationship with his son and his belief zulm ka badla zulm. And contrast the manner in which he speaks English in his clipped British accent!
Adalat
I adored Amitji in Abhimaan. The scene where he holds didibai (Jaya Bachchan) with her wet hair and pulls her down to him was just too much! And his touching his lower lip as a sign language to suggest intimacy was such, a subtle touch. The silent suffering that his wife was more popular than him was so brilliantly portrayed.
Abhimaan
Nobody, I repeat NOBODY speaks Awadhi like Amitji. He is the original Ganga kinaarewala. A complete natural. Again the two contrasting characters are simply a treat to watch… again and again.
Don
I love the silences in Shakti. Especially the scene after Raakhee’s death where he quietly comes and places his hand on his father’s arm.
Shakti
I like everything about that performance. Like Padosan, it’s timeless. An instant pick-me-up movie.
Namak Halal
It’s my all-time favourite performance. It scores even higher than Deewaar for me. He subtly tells you the difference between being a drunkard and an alcoholic. The little touches of normalcy he adds to a complete alcoholic were masterly. It was an effortless performance. No theatrics, exaggeration. He wasn’t playing to the gallery; he wasn’t trying to prove a point. The only other performance of his that comes anywhere close is the one in Black. I don’t think he can ever repeat or excel the Sharaabi portrayal. And dare I say… all you remake specialists out there don’t even try this one.
Sharaabi
I remember the dialogue, “Dukh toh is baat ka hai ke maine anjaane mein tumhe dukh pahunchaaya hai.” How can love and passion be performed more real than that? What a phew-nomenal piece of craft. No wonder the world believed that the triangle was for real.

In Bollywood, not just the lead stars, but several actors have received immense love for their villainous roles. Let’s dive into the journey of an actor who left the Indian Air Force and saw the highest of the highs in his illustrious career.
We’re talking about none other than Gopal Singh Bedi aka Ranjeet Bedi. His iconic performances in several movies since the 70s and 80s have left an indelible mark in the audiences’ hearts. Before entering the industry, he studied in the science stream and graduated from Hindu College in Delhi.
He was quite a sports enthusiast and represented his college team as the football team’s goalkeeper, which also earned him the title of Goli (misspelled version of Goalie). In an earlier conversation with Film Companion, the veteran actor shared that his mentor thought he was “maaroing line” on his daughter.
This caused an altercation between him and his mentor. Thus, he left IAF and came back to his carefree life. Later, Ranjeet was introduced to Bollywood by a friend’s father, Ranvir Singh, who was connected to the royal family of Kota and had worked with people from the British film industry. When Singh offered him his debut film, Zindagi Ki Raahein (which was shelved), he lied to his family and came to Mumbai as working in films was considered taboo back then.
After interesting twists and turns in his journey, the actor landed his first role in Saawan Bhado which was released in 1970. This was followed by his roles in movies like Sharmeelee, Reshma Aur Shera, Border, Bulandi, and many more. Over the years, the actor is known to have worked in more than 200 films.
While speaking with the publication, the legendary actor went on to reveal that he was one of the busiest actors during the seventies. “I had 80 films on the floor at one point,” he shared with the publication. It was the time he and Rajesh Khanna, Randhir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, and more would casually spend time together.
Nevertheless, his love for acting is unstoppable, and he continues to work in films on his terms. Prior to his next release in 2025 with Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 5; he did only Hindi movies in the last ten years-Welcome Back (2015) and Housefull 4 (2019).
In addition to this, the actor remains quite active on his social media handle as well.
Which of Ranjeet’s works is your favorite, do let us know in the comments section. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.

Kalki 2898 AD begins in an alternate universe and is a perfect blend of mythology and modernity. The setting is mesmerizing and the storyline gripping and will have you expecting the unexpected from the very start. Prabhas (Bhairava) takes his own sweet time to finally reveal himself on the screen but his entry is absolutely seeti-maar. The first half is spent in taking the audience inside the world of 2898 AD and introduction of key characters like Yaskin (Kamal Haasan), Sumathi (Deepika Padukone) and Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan). However, the pace is a little slow till you finally reach a gripping turn right before the interval. The setting is spectacular and the perfect big screen experience. And the larger than life characters make the storyline all the more interesting. We wait to see the second half where the destroyer and the savior will take on each other and await some more visually spectacular action scenes. So far the film has kept it’s promise to stun audience with an intriguing storyline and visual experience. But yet there is a lot that remains to be seen. There are some unexpected cameos in the first half and more lined up in the second half as well. However, despite such a cast and character heavy narrative, everyone seems to have their well deserved space in the storyline, even the AI assistance Bujji.

Kalki 2898 AD: Kamal Haasan waited 3 weeks for Amitabh Bachchan’s Sholay
Kalki 2898 AD is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Directed by Nag Ashwin, the sci-fi film features Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone and more. The film’s cast got together for an event in Mumbai ahead of its release.

EXCLUSIVE: “I’m not so good at this part, you know,” Indian megastar Prabhas tells Deadline on the set of upcoming mythological sci-fi movie Kalki 2898 AD.
He is referring to his inability to push his work “into the international level,” but this might all be about to change. For Deadline is speaking to Prabhas in the late evening about a movie which, at a reported budget topping 600 crore rupees ($72M), is estimated to be one of the most expensive Indian movies ever made, potentially the most. Vyjayanthi Movies is behind the production.
Releasing on June 27 after multiple delays, director Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD is a sci-fi infused retelling of the Hindu myth of Kalki and the Kali Yuga, the end of the current world age. The film launched its first teaser at the San Diego Comic-Con last year under previous title Project K, becoming the first Indian film to do so. “The whole film is made for international [audiences],” says Prabhas. “That’s why it’s the highest budget and we’ve got the best actors in the country.”
Along with Prabhas, the film brings together some of India’s most renowned actors – veteran Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, actor, entrepreneur and mental health advocate Deepika Padukone, who was India’s top-paid actress last year, and multiple National Award-winner and Tamil actor Kamal Haasan. “I never thought I would work with people like Amitabh Sir and Kamal Sir [at all], let alone in one film,” Prabhas adds. “When I heard, I called the producer and said, ‘What are you giving me? This is an achievement beyond anything’.”
While India’s international film footprint is primarily associated with Hindi-speaking Bollywood, Kalki 2898 AD is shot primarily in Telugu and will release simultaneously in five languages. It is the latest example in a string of recent films that have been dubbed “pan-Indian” by critics, featuring stars from Bollywood in the same productions as those from regional Indian film industries such as Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. Since starring in S.S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion – which were the top-grossing Indian movies ever at the time of release – Prabhas has been widely regarded as the first ever “pan-Indian” actor.
“We were hearing for the first time people calling me ‘pan-Indian’,” he says. “That doesn’t really affect me but it’s a good feeling to think that people around the country like me now.”
Throngs of fans
Prabhas is being modest, as evidenced by the throngs of fans in his home state of Andhra Pradesh that gather for a promotional event two days before our chat.

An estimated 15,000 fans congregate to see the launch of Bujji, a custom-made sentient car that acts as a comic sidekick to Prabhas’ lead character Bhairava in the film. Police patrol the area to prevent a stampede, and a meshed grill separates the crowds from Prabhas, who pulls up two hours late in a working model of the Bujji car accompanied by a blaze of pyrotechnics, dramatic music and squad of black-costumed stormtroopers.
Although Bollywood is undeniably huge, the level of devotion bestowed on South Indian film stars (specifically in the Tamil and Telugu film industries) is reminiscent of frenzied parasocial behaviour more commonly seen among obsessive fandoms of musical artists. Of the 10 minutes he takes to address the masses, several are spent apologizing for a promotional Instagram story teasing “a very special person,” which prompted fans to speculate wildly about his relationship status. “I’m not getting married any time soon, I don’t want to hurt the feelings of my female fans,” assured Prabhas, the crowd roaring its approval.
“In the South especially, [the fans] feel like you are their family,” he explains to Deadline later. “They feel everything. Sometimes they feel like you are their son, the kids feel like you are their brother. Sometimes they feel like you are God.”
“So whatever is said and done, I will be very careful that I will not cheat them,” he adds.
The pressure to not let people down is perhaps felt even more keenly by 38-year-old Ashwin, who is directing the movie. “We have four of the biggest stars in the country, some of the biggest VFX studios and there are a huge amount of action sequences as well,” he explains.
A self-professed nerd as a child, Ashwin’s vision for Kalki 2898 AD resembled “a character from [Indian mythological comic book] Amar Chithra Katha fighting someone from X-Men”. “I hope people will feel really strange when they leave the theater after watching Kalki 2898 AD, and will say, ‘Where am I? Can I go back into this world?’,” says Ashwin, who recalls feeling similarly disoriented after watching James Cameron’s Avatar. He says he made the movie for his 10-year-old self.
The scale of promotion is intended to be global – as seen from last year’s Comic-Con launch – but Ashwin is clear he will not modify any of the names to be more palatable to non-Indian audiences. “It’s Ashwatthama,” he says, spelling out the full name of Bachchan’s cursed warrior character. “Ashwatthama with two T’s.”

World cinema has seen countless adaptations of Norse, Greek and Roman mythologies, but Hindu is trickier to adapt because it still boasts more than 1 billion adherents worldwide. An increasingly polarized India has seen multiple film adaptations of Hindu mythology announced in recent years, includingNamit Malhotra’s upcoming version of Hindu epic Ramayana. Hailed as a global collaboration and featuring Hans Zimmer on the score, this movie will become another of India’s most expensive film productions in 2025.
Ashwin is not concerned, stating that Kalki 2898 AD does not involve any characters actively worshipped by large numbers of Hindus. “We can take it as extremely religious or we can take it as the story of somebody who was born with a lot of power, didn’t know what to do with it, and found his mentor in the process,” he says as Prabhas nods agreement. “Of course, if you tell it in the Indian context there will be a bit of devotion and emotion, but I feel any story can be dealt with subjectively without bringing a religious connotation.”
Kalki 2898 AD is the first instalment in this universe, and, if the first performs well, Ashwin, who says Marvel movies “open massively” in India, plans to direct sequels. Aside from ensuring the financial satisfaction of the film’s stakeholders (including his wife, sister-in-law and father-in-law, who are producers on the film), Ashwin’s definition for success involves “reaching people and demographics that we didn’t sit in a room and try to target.” He shares the example of going on a family holiday to the northeast Indian state of Sikkim, where a small theater was still showing Baahubali a month or two after its release. “I thought that was really cool because I don’t think the makers planned that to happen.”
“If that happens for this movie, that would be something special.”
