Earlier this week, rumors swirled that the Denver Broncos had decided to bench quarterback Russell Wilson for the remaining two games of the season. This move comes after a season where Russell and the Broncos were able to ride their strong defense into competing for a playoff spot before the last few weeks got away from them.

When head coach Sean Payton was hired, it was understood then that this relationship between the QB and coach would be evaluated on an annual basis. Recent developments suggest that the Broncos may be leaning toward Payton’s perspective, signaling a potential shift away from the 35-year-old quarterback.

Wilson’s contract has him receiving an estimated $37 million salary next season. If Wilson suits up in the next two weeks and suffers a catastrophic injury, he would be owed that money. The Broncos seem to have made the logical decision to bench him for the remaining two weeks of the season. This move not only safeguards against financial implications but also allows the team to assess its options strategically as they enter a crucial off-season period.

Since the news of the team benching him, we haven’t heard from Wilson. He finally broke his silence yesterday on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“God’s got me,” he wrote. “Looking forward to what’s next.”

The future is murky for the Quarterback. If he does leave Denver, it’s uncertain if many teams would welcome him in as a starter. Wilson finished this season with over 3,000 passing yards on the season (3,070) while completing 65% of his passes.

Most things must come to an end, including this weird relationship between Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos. Let’s Ride.
