Robert Card has been found dead from an apparent suicide.

The widespread manhunt for the mass shooter, which was launched on Wednesday following his deadly rampage, came to an end Friday evening when his body was found in Lisbon, Maine. His vehicle and gun were found nearby. His death arrived shortly after police reported locating a suicide note that was addressed to his son. Multiple law enforcement agencies joined in on the pursuit after Card opened fire at Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley before entering Schemengees Bar and Grille Restaurant and shooting more patrons.

Card was a firearms instructor who had recently been committed to a mental health institution. He had a long history of hearing voices and threatening to commit violence. In fact, he once told people that he would shoot up a military base in Saco. In mid-July, there were reports of Card “behaving erratically.” Card was transported to the Keller Army Community Hospital at the United States Military Academy for evaluation. A family member told CBS News that Card was a schizophrenic who had “a lot going on in his head.”

Additionally, Card was also a longtime Army reservist with plenty of knowledge of weapons and shooting. Not long after he claimed the lives of 18 people, Card was named a suspect and had an arrest warrant out for eight counts of murder, though the number of counts was expected to soar as more victims were identified by family.

Police will be holding a press conference soon to detail Card’s suicide.
