Each year, the weekend after Labor Day means a spate of art fairs across New York City. The temperature (hopefully) drops; the art on display surges. Whether you’re into sprawling expositions or smaller, subversive fairs are more your speed, there is something for everyone in the burst of art on display this weekend. Here’s a guide to some of our favorites.
The Armory Show
Anchoring the rush of art fairs is the show that galvanized some of the satellite fairs on this list under the umbrella of “Armory Week.” This year, the labyrinthine Armory Show will present 200 galleries from 30 countries in addition to programming its third edition of Armory Off-Site, an outdoor art program that brings large-scale artworks to New York City’s parks and public spaces. The Independent 20th Century
A new iteration of the Independent Art Fair emerged in 2022 to champion artists and international avant-garde movements from 1900-2000. Returning for its second edition, the Independent 20th Century spotlights lesser-known artist narratives and practices worthy of a closer look. Art on Paper
The paper fair returns to downtown Manhattan’s Pier 36 with 100 galleries for the fair’s ninth edition, showcasing the creative potential of paper; the Artist Book Fair, which celebrates book art; and the reintroduction of Flat Files, which features fine art printmakers and publishers from around the world. Photofairs New York
Debuting at the Javits Center is a new fair dedicated to photography and new media. Photofairs will present trends in fine art photo-based works, experimental filmmaking, virtual reality and NFTs, all with a focus on the intersection of technology and photography. Spring/Break Art Show
The fair known for showcasing the works of nascent and young artists — which most recently has taken place inside Ralph Lauren’s former Madison Avenue offices in New York City — is back, with the theme “Wild Card.” Expect works inspired by pleasure-seekers, mystics and jokers. Spring/Break aims to expand arts access by offering no- and low-cost exhibition space for artisans. Opening-night tickets are $59, regular fair day tickets $42, and a run-of-show ticket $107.
