Rep. Ami Bera calls for a federal task force to tackle mail theft in Sacramento County

Congressman Ami Bera urges law enforcement to form a task force to tackle mail theft in Sacramento County.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Representative Ami Bera this week sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Chief Postal Inspector Gary Barksdale regarding the increase in mail theft and vandalism in Sacramento County neighborhoods.

The letter sent on Wednesday says in part, “While I appreciate the USPS, USPIS, and OIG responding to my inquiries, mail theft and vandalism continue unabated across the Sacramento region.”

Bera goes on to call for law enforcement intervention, “specifically, the formation of a dedicated Task Force that brings together the investigative and prosecutorial resources of the Department of Justice and USPIS, in partnership with local law enforcement.”

In April 2025, ABC10 reported that a federal audit had uncovered serious security lapses at multiple U.S. Postal Service facilities in Sacramento County, highlighting issues with lost mailbox keys and inadequate tracking procedures that contributed to rising mail theft, officials said.

The audit, conducted by the USPS Office of Inspector General, reviewed three post offices: Sacramento’s main facility on Royal Oaks Drive, the Fort Sutter station on Alhambra Boulevard, and the Rancho Cordova post office on Progress Court.

Among the key findings, 35% of cluster mailbox keys were missing at the Royal Oaks facility, affecting eight ZIP codes. The audit also found 21% of keys missing at the Fort Sutter location and 3% at Rancho Cordova, raising concerns about security vulnerabilities.
