Sunny was written by Bobby Hebb. Conflicting info says he wrote it after the death of his brother, though Hebb is quoted as saying “All my intentions were just to think of happier times – basically looking for a brighter day – because times were at a low tide.” He Bobby toured with with Beatles on the success of this song.

Also in 1966, Cher released an album of covers and included Sunny on it. Some people think she sings it as a tribute to her then husband Sonny Bono. She starts off slowly, but then picks up with a “Sonny and Cher” vibe to the tune. She achieved Scandanavian success with her single. Ranked #1 & 2 in Netherlands, #1 in Norway, and #3 in Sweden.
James Brown performed the song in live in Paris. And he PERFORMED it as only James Brown can.
1976 brings a Boney M version to life. Boney M is a German reggae, funk and disco music group. Their version was sampled by Mark Ronson for his 2003 song “Ooh Wee” and also featured in the Umbrella Academy season 2 soundtrack. Boney M remixed it for their 20th Century Hits album.
This 1976 version charted #1 in Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, and West Germany (this was before the wall fell). It certified Gold in New Zealand and Silver in the UK.
Spanish version? Yes! In 1987, Luis Miguel recorded and included on his album Soy Como Quiero Ser.

Bobby Hebb lived until 2010, so he was able to hear most of the versions of his hit. He recorded it once more in 1977 called Sunny ’76. The people who bring us music should be revered.
