Oscar-nominated filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Reiner, were tragically stabbed to death in their home on December 14. Not long after, their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Nick has pleaded not guilty, but he has been in solitary confinement at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles since December.
Now, People is reporting that Nick was disciplined after he allegedly became “extremely hostile” toward deputies while waiting to be escorted back to his cell after a shower. The incident occurred on April 27.
“He was recalcitrant, extremely hostile, creating a verbal disturbance, refusing to follow rules and not listening to any commands,” a source told the outlet about Reiner, who reportedly became hostile when deputies did not immediately escort him back to his cell. “He was yelling, screaming, being disrespectful and shouting many profanities.”
Reports indicate the delay had to do with an emergency elsewhere, as another inmate had suffered an overdose.
“[He] became very impatient. He was upset and hostile because no one was coming back right away and he wasn’t attended to,” the source added. “He had finished showering and changed and wanted to return to his cell. When it took too long, he became frustrated and angry.”
The outlet, however, says the confrontation never became physical. In response, Reiner was issued a disciplinary write-up for allegedly violating jail rules and lost several inmate privileges for five days, including phone calls, visitation and commissary access.
Nick Reiner has spent the last seven months in isolation, the outlet had previously reported. He is being held in the jail’s mental health unit and receives welfare checks every 15 minutes. Until Monday, July 27, he had reportedly not received a personal visitor outside of his attorneys. That day he a visitor identified as a “relative” paid him a visit, with his lawyer present.
Recent reports about Reiner said he was much changed. “Nick no longer looks like Nick,” an insider close to the Reiner family told the Daily Mail in July 2026. “He is rapidly deteriorating. No one would recognize him. He is almost bald because they have to keep his hair super short to keep the bugs out, and he is super skinny because of the intense medication he is on. His eyes are very sunken in.”’
He has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
“Nick has not been well for many years, but before jail, some of his personality could be recognized. Not now. He is like a babbling child, totally out of it,” the source explained. “It’s so bad his lawyers have a hard time talking to him.”
And the isolation is reportedly not helping. “Because of his mental health condition, Nick cannot mix with other inmates, which means he is alone all the time with his own dark thoughts. It is extremely unhealthy,” the source continued.
“He is not all there,” the source claimed. “He doesn’t know what year it is or who is the president of the United States. He cannot process reality or focus.”
