Jane Fonda has revealed that the iconic slapping scene in Monster-in-Law was heated both on- and off-screen, with the actress claiming her skin was broken in real life during the play fight.

Fonda, 85, shared a behind-the-scenes tidbit on The Drew Barrymore Show, sharing that her co-star, Jennifer Lopez, actually ended up landing a blow on Fonda’s eyebrow.

“Well Jennifer – as per Jennifer – she had this enormous diamond ring and so when she slapped me one of the times, it cut open across my eye, my eyebrow,” she recalled.

“You know, she’s never apologised,” she then quipped with an incredulous expression as audience members reacted with laughs and gasps.

Fonda’s Moving On co-star Lily Tomlin did not say anything in response, but host Drew Barrymore covered her face with her hands in shock before quickly moving on.

Lopez, on the other hand, has previously stated she was “so afraid to hit Jane Fonda in the face or hurt her in any way.”

“‘I was so afraid of [Fonda] and she was so brave,” she mentioned in a video posted to her YouTube channel in 2019.

Fonda apparently then told her: “Just hit me. Don’t worry about it, it’s going to be fine.”

The 2005 film saw Fonda and Lopez play a reluctant mother- and daughter-in-law. There are a series of hijinks involved, with Fonda’s character Viola even wearing white on Lopez’s character Charlie’s wedding day to elicit a response from her.

And a response she got, with Charlie slapping her soon-to-be mother-in-law in the face, but not before she got one right back. Soon enough they were exchanging slaps, during which Fonda says she sustained the cut.

During the exchange, Charlie stops and apologises for her behaviour, to which Viola says: “You don’t go and slap somebody and then apologise, get some backbone.”

The on-screen slap fight then continued.
