We all know that a big part of being happy and healthy is being active–and that certainly applies to our dogs as well. National Canine Fitness Month is a time to focus on keeping our canine companions in shape and encouraging an active lifestyle. It’s an opportunity to learn new exercises, try new activities, and spend quality time with our furry friends.

National Canine Fitness Month

When is National Canine Fitness Month?

National Canine Fitness Month is recognized every April. This pet holiday was founded by FitPAWS®, a company that specializes in canine fitness equipment and training with products ranging from rocker boards to balance discs. They started this initiative to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity for dogs and to help owners incorporate exercise into their dog’s daily routine.

How Can You Help Keep Your Dog Fit?

Here are some tips to help you keep your dog fit and healthy during Canine Fitness Month and beyond:

Make time for exercise

Just like humans, dogs need regular exercise to stay healthy. Aim to provide at least 30 minutes of moderate activity, such as brisk walking or playing fetch, every day. Dog walks, dog games and dog sports all help to keep your dog fit and engaged.

As with people, if your dog has health issues, consult with your veterinarian before starting an exercise plan to discuss appropriate exercises that will be safe for your dog.

Mix it up

Variety is the spice of life, and it’s no different for dogs. Try different activities such as hiking, swimming, or agility training to keep your dog engaged and stimulated. This can also help prevent boredom and destructive behaviors.

When we have to stick to our usual walk routine instead of exploring a new trail, I mix up our walks a bit by taking the trail in the opposite direction! Usually turn east out of your house to start your walk then return on the west side? Mix it up by turning west and returning from the east! It’s the same route but it’s surprising how “new” the walk seems–both to you and your dog–just by walking it in the opposite direction!

Use proper equipment

Invest in good quality equipment such as collars, harnesses, and leashes to ensure your dog’s safety and comfort during exercise. Consider using toys like balls, flying discs, or tug ropes to make exe

Monitor their food intake

Just like us, dogs can gain weight if they consume more calories than they burn. Monitor your dog’s food intake and adjust as necessary to maintain a healthy weight.

Consult with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate amount of food and the right type of diet for your dog’s needs.

Regular checkups

Schedule regular checkups with your veterinarian to ensure that your dog is in good health and that their exercise routine is appropriate for their needs. Your vet can also provide guidance on any changes that need to be made.

In conclusion, National Canine Fitness Month is an excellent opportunity to focus on your dog’s fitness and encourage an active lifestyle. With the right equipment, exercise plan and diet, you can help your dog stay healthy and happy for years to come. So, get out there and have fun with your pup!
