Meghan Trainor has responded to the online “attacks” she’s faced since losing weight.
The All About That Bass singer, 31, has released a new single called Still Don’t Care, addressing the backlash she received from so-called body positivity groups online.
Lyrics of the song say: “Said I was too thick, then I got way too thin / And I try to stand out, but I wanna fit in / ‘You’re a little too loud,’ ‘stretch marks on your skin’ / ‘Can’t believe you’re still here, girl, where have you been?”
The singer also spoke to Entertainment Tonight, discussing the new single and the online trolls that Trainor says are “getting louder.”
“There’s more of them, it’s crazy,” Trainor told the outlet.
“The world’s getting crazier and meaner… I’m literally for the first time ever, after having babies, taking care of my health to the highest level.
“I’ve never felt better. I look incredible. I feel great. And that’s when people attack me.
“I’m taking care of myself…so what am I supposed to do? I have to find a way to not be affected by that.”
Trainor shot to fame with her 2014 single All About That Bass, which was largely celebrated as a body-positive anthem, with lyrics saying “Yeah, it’s pretty clear, I ain’t no size two / You know I won’t be no stick-figure, silicone Barbie doll.”
In the interview, the singer went on to say that when she released All About That Bass, she “didn’t believe” the words she was singing.
“All About That Bass... I didn’t believe that when I wrote it, it was like, ‘I can’t wait to actually believe this one day when I perform it 100 times,'” she said.
When the interview was posted to social media, fans said they were disappointed that Trainor didn’t believe her lyrics in her debut single.
“So she’s saying she didn’t believe the message she was giving… but didn’t care as long as it sold records and basically lying to all those who looked up to her for giving out that message love yourself, whatever your size,” one person wrote.
“Well, don’t sing about how it’s good to be chunky to then go use weight loss drugs,” another said.
Trainor lost approximately 27kg with a combination of weight loss injections, strength training and changing her diet.
“Learning how to eat healthy is a science. If everyone knew how to do it, everyone would do it, it’s so hard. Each person is different,” she continued in the interview.
“I realised like I had leaky gut and I wasn’t taking in any nutrition.
“So then I went gluten-free and dairy-free, which is so hard to do, but I did that for like five months, and it has fixed so many things.”
