SPRINGFIELD, Co. – A man placed his dog in the driver’s seat to avoid getting a DUI in Colorado Saturday.

A Springfield police officer was performing what he believed to be a normal routine traffic stop. What he didn’t realize was that when he approached the driver’s side window, a dog would be behind the wheel.

The car in question was driving at 52 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone.

When the man got out of the car, he claimed he was not the one driving. A Springfield officer says they watched the man switch places with his dog in the passenger seat.

The man ran away from law enforcement when asked about his alcohol consumption.

According to deputies, he clearly showed signs of intoxication.

After he was taken into custody, it was discovered that he had two active warrants for his arrest out of Pueblo.

He was driving from Las Animas to Pueblo and got lost in Springfield.

The man was medically cleared at the hospital and taken to the Baca County Jail.

He faces charges of; driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, driving while ability impaired, driving under suspension, speeding 20 to 24 over and resisting arrest.

The dog was given to an acquaintance of the driver while the party was in jail.

Deputies say the dog does not face any charges and was let go with just a warning.
