Man arrested hours after opening fire on Hennepin County deputies in south Minneapolis, sheriff’s office says

Law enforcement officers arrested a man in south Minneapolis Tuesday evening following an hours-long standoff.

The deputies were attempting to serve an arrest warrant for 31-year-old Tyler Joseph O’Brien when someone opened fire. The sheriff’s office says they “can’t affirmatively confirm the suspect involved in the shooting is the same person.” There are no reported injuries, the sheriff’s office says.

According to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened just before noon on West 28th Street and Nicollet Avenue in the city’s bustling Eat Street district.

The apartment building was evacuated while the suspect remained barricaded inside.

Video from WCCO’s chopper showed a woman and a young child escaping to safety. Police commanded her to put her hands up, then walk down the backstairs with the kid on her hip. A dog followed close behind.

A WCCO crew at the scene heard police telling the suspect over a loudspeaker to come out with his hands up. They also threatened to use force, including gas.

An officer on scene told WCCO they feared the suspect had a long gun and explosives, and they worried he could get on the roof and start firing.

Deputies say they used a drone to find the suspect inside this apartment, but he shot it down.

Law enforcement will remain in the area to clear the apartment and process the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
