Lucasfilm announced today on stage at their Star Wars Celebration in London that Lars Mikkelsen is set to play the fan favourite villain Grand Admiral Thrawn in the upcoming series “Ahsoka.”
Originally created by Timothy Zahn in the 90s for his novels set after “Return of the Jedi,” Thrawn was a cunning and ruthless Grand Admiral in the Empire who takes control of what’s left of the Imperial fleet and mounts a counter-offensive to take down the New Republic. He was a favourite among Star Wars fans, but with Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, the Expanded Universe was no longer considered canon. However, Dave Filoni revived Thrawn in the animated Star Wars series “Star Wars: Rebels,” maintaining much of his biography and backstory. Lars also voiced the character in that series.
The prospect of Thrawn in live action was first hinted at in season 2 of “the Mandalorian,” mentioned by Ahsoka.
