Hoar Cross Hall champions Earth Day 2024: Planet vs Plastics, and inspires peers to reduce plastic waste

Award-winning spa hotel, Hoar Cross Hall, is joining millions around the world in celebrating Earth Day, whose theme this year is Planets vs Plastic, and is championing initiatives that will eliminate single-use plastics to inspire others to do the same.

Hoar Cross Hall is proudly a zero-landfill property thanks to their partnership with The Waste Specialist and their combined sustainability initiatives, such as only supplying plastic-free in-room toiletries, including refillable shower gels, offering filtered water in place of bottled mineral water, and no longer providing single-use cups: schemes which have been in place since 2020.

These initiatives are reflected in the Hoar Cross Hall Spa, whose supplier, Voya, provides products packaged in recycled, recyclable, or biodegradable materials. The products are also all cruelty-free and certified organic, further adding to their sustainability credentials.

Elemis, another supplier to the Spa, are in the process of improving the eco-design of the formulations and will launch more sustainable packaging across their lines.

Hoar Cross Hall is also a founding member of Sustainable Wellness, formally known as The Sustainable Spa Association, which is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to assisting Spa businesses in implementing successful and profitable long-term sustainability strategies. In addition, Sustainable Wellness works on sustainability standards for the global Spa and wellness tourism sector.

Another way in which the hotel reduces its environmental impact and plastic use is through the twenty beehives installed across the properties, which are overseen by resident beekeepers. The bees not only produce delicious honey for guests to enjoy, without plastic packaging or transportation emissions but also benefit the local ecosystem and wildlife.

In recognition of Hoar Cross Hall’s dedication to sustainability, they have been awarded a score of 390/500 using the FuturePlus framework, which measures climate, D&I, social, economic, and environmental factors. The hotel’s score places it in the top 5% of all companies using the framework.

Thanks to their commitment to preserving the planet, Hoar Cross Hall was also a finalist in the British Renewable Energy Awards in the Pioneer category, achieved Gold Accreditation in Sustainable Wellness from The Sustainable Spa Association, attained Silver Award from Green Tourism, and was awarded the Staffordshire Environmental Quality Mark.

Constantly looking to the future, Hoar Cross Hall has a number of concise and achievable targets set to continue spearheading sustainability schemes.

Phil Murphy, Managing Director at Hoar Cross Hall, said, ”With Hoar Cross Hall nestled in the heart of the beautiful Staffordshire countryside, it should come as no surprise that all of the team members have a passion for preserving the environment and sustainable practices.

I am extremely proud of our team and the steps towards a greener future we have taken.  Research has found that a comparable hotel to Hoar Cross Hall, could use 156,000 pieces of single-use plastic in just one month.*,so there is no better day, than Earth Day, to celebrate that we are a zero-landfill venue and share how we have achieved this in partnership with The Waste Specialist.

We hope that by sharing our initiatives others in the industry will be inspired to reduce their plastic use and implement more green measures.”
