Eve Hewson Wanted Steven Spielberg ‘To Scare the S— Out of’ Her, Talks Barack Obama’s Set Visit

Disclosure Day actress Eve Hewson has opened up about wanting Steven Spielberg “to scare the s— out of” her on set. She also recalled the day Barack Obama made a surprise visit to watch filming. Directed by Spielberg, the sci-fi thriller, which was released worldwide on June 12, has been generating buzz for its cast and high-concept premise.

Eve Hewson addresses what went on Disclosure Day set

Eve Hewson recently opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about what went down on the Disclosure Day set. She confessed that nerves hit her early as her first big scene with Colin Firth was a slow-burn mind-control standoff.

“I get into the hair and makeup trailer and ask what’s going on, and they’re like, ‘The fucking president is coming,’ ” she recalled. “So not only is Barack Obama showing up, but the entire rest of the cast who isn’t in the scene is coming to meet him. So I had to do the whole thing in front of [the former president] and Steven Spielberg, plus Emily Blunt and Colman Domingo and Josh O’Connor,” the actress added.

Hewson had worked with Spielberg once before in a small role in Bridge of Spies. Her key scene had her ducking under a coffee table while soldiers tore through her house with gunfire. And to rattle her, the Jaws director stayed just out of frame. During takes, he stood just off-camera, clapping two wooden bats together to startle her.

“Whenever I had to do anything big on set, I would say to the directors, ‘Can you just bang something together to scare the shit out of me?’ ”Hewson added.

Eve Hewson is no stranger to formidable figures; after all, her father is Bono. She spent her childhood in Dublin, away from red carpets. Her parents steered her toward theater and music lessons rather than fame. The shift happened when a former tutor became an indie filmmaker and asked her to help on set. “That’s when I got the disease of Hollywood — and it is a disease,” she laughingly shared.
